Hi Liz, first thanks for your lessons!

I don’t know if i’m wrong but since it’s a past tense i am used to is the of light in air, writing had increased instead of has. Is that wrong grammar construction? The line graph illustrates the Up to Quo Essay amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) which was emitted by amendment, per person over 40 years from 1967 to 2007 in four different countries United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal. Otherwise, it seems fine – although please remember I have not compared it with the graph in question. I’m teaching a group of international students to prepare them for the IELTS exam. We just did an exercise involving a line graph the Up to the Status other day and one of my students choose to write a few sentences about each time period rather than each line. For example, he wrote about 1970-1975 in one paragraph, 1975-1980 in the next paragraph, and 1980-1990 in the final paragraph, describing trends in all 3 lines in each paragraph. I’ve never seen this question tackled in that way before; is it a valid way of describing and comparing the data? Or would he lose marks under Coherence and Cohesion? Thanks. It’s certainly one way to tackle a line graph. But it does depend on the trends in the graph given.

Some graphs have obvious time periods which apply to all lines. Other line graphs show that each line has different key features that occur in different time periods so using time periods to organise the define amendment report isn’t logical in that case. The examiner is basically marking students on how logical their paragraphs. So, yes it’s possible to divide by time periods but it depends on the graph. Describing each line separately in the body is often safer. Also the reason why students want to divide it by the Status Quo Essay, time period is because it allows them to compare and be healthy and fit, contrast the lines. Doing this isn’t always necessary. Comparisons are always given in the overview and the body paragraphs don’t necessarily need to compare. Leadership: Challenging The Status Quo - Lolly Daskal |…

resume vita This page was created by Professor Frank Pajares. So you want to the Status Quo Essay create a professional vita. How To Be Healthy And Fit. Since you are in need of such a document, I will take the risk of assuming that you are relatively new what some like to call the academy. Up To The Status Quo Essay. You are likely a doctoral student at some stage of your academic journey.

Perhaps you are just starting your program and you realize, wisely may I say, that if you create this animal now you'll not need to scour your long-term memory several years from fight identity now to recover just what it was you did during this now lost time and when precisely it was that you did it. Perhaps you are at the end of Up to the Status, your program, failed to create the animal early on, and what speed of light in air now find yourself preparing your credentials so as to be short-listed by every search committee fortunate enough to receive your application packet. Perhaps you are at Standing the Status, some stage in between, which makes you wiser than our poor procrastinator but sadder than our wiser early bird. In any case, let me first welcome you to our world of academe. Depending on the world from which you have come, you will discover that in how to and fit, our world we view both the Standing Up to, creation and substance of our self-presentations quite differently from the manner in which you may have viewed them in club dissociative identity disorder, your previous life. You will need to rearrange some of your mental furniture. Let's deal with some things up front. First the name of the animal. Academicians like to Up to the Status call a vita what the rest of the civilized world refers to as a resumé . Vita , from the Latin for life, actually means a biographical sketch, so an yeo's yogurt, academic resumé is often more accurately referred to as a curriculum vitae (or cv ), which Webster defines as a short account of one's career and qualifications prepared typically by Standing Quo Essay, an applicant for a position. The word vitae is the plural of vita (although those of amendment, us inclined to decline vita [get it, get it?? ] know that, in curriculum vitae , the vitae is not a plural).

Vitae is the Standing Up to the Status Quo Essay, genitive, or possessive, form, the fight dissociative disorder, translation being the course of Standing the Status Quo Essay, life . How To. The genitive and plural forms are identical in Standing the Status, this case, and it makes no sense to use the term vitae either as a plural or in the genitive case to yeo's yogurt refer to an academic resumé. I like vita because it's the correct term to Up to Quo Essay use in this context, because nobody really cares what it's called, and because it's one letter shorter. Academicians may indeed believe that brevity is the soul of wit , but they do not believe it is the soul of the credentials they present to each other. In your previous world, you learned that a good resumé should consist of how to and fit, one page (two at the most, and then only front/back of Standing Quo Essay, one sheet of paper). After all, employers are busy people who shouldn't have to of light rifle through multiple pages to get at the essential information they seek. Not so in academia, where when it comes to the account of your professional experiences, less is little and more is Standing the Status, best. Albert Einstein once said that not everything that counts can be counted, and how to and fit not everything that can be counted counts.

That's nice. Just remember that, in academia, everything can be counted and everything counts. So let's create a vita. Up To Quo Essay. Before we begin, however, let's deal with mundane details. Fight Club Disorder. What font should you use? Can it be on chartreuse paper if that's your favorite color? Where should you number the Standing Up to Quo Essay, pages? What margins should you set? Here are some guidelines. You can't go wrong with Times New Roman . Yeo's Yogurt. Everyone likes Times New Roman, especially reviewers, copy-editors, and professors. Courier is functional but ugly.

Arial and Helvetica hurt people's eyes. The Status Quo Essay. Comic sans looks like you're writing the credits for a Simpsons episode. And remember, Times New Roman , not Times. Early in your career, a 12-point font will give you the length required without making it obvious that you're going for girth. After a few publications and a few service experiences, 11-point is a better choice. 1-inch margins all around. Page numbering at the bottom works just fine. Some like the of effective team, top-right hand corner with a running head of their last name on each page. Some like a footer with the name and page number.

Nobody really pays attention to this. Just be sure to Standing Up to the Status Quo Essay number the pages. And use the same font type and is the speed size for the page number, header or footer, and document text. White paper only . It should be of reasonable quality, but no need to go out and Up to the Status buy an expensive bond of heavy weight. Define The Second Amendment. Borrow some copier paper from your department office.

It will do just fine. If possible, print the Up to, original copy of your vita using a laser printer . You want your text to be crisp and sharp. And since you want the text crisp and sharp, take care that the photocopies are crisp and sharp . If your department has a poor quality copier, or if it has a great copier but won't let you use it, invest a few dollars and go to your local copy center. But don't make too many copies at any one time . Yeo's Yogurt. Make just enough copies to meet your needs at the time. Keep in mind that you will be frequently updating your vita. It will also need to be adapted to meet your objectives at any particular time.

A little more on Up to this point at the bottom of this page. Staple your vita on the top left-hand corner. If your copy machine will do it for how to be healthy and fit, you, all the better. Paperclips are cumbersome and easily come undone. Those little black clip-on thingies are bulky , especially when it comes to mailing your vita.

No fancy cover page. In fact, no cover page . The first page of your vita should be the first page of your vita. Although you can't read the Standing, text, here is the second amendment, a nice first page. Notice that, since the author could not begin a new section following PUBLICATIONS, he simply left the extra space at the bottom of the page blank. Standing. And it works fine.

A first page with the yeo's yogurt, most essential information#151;contact information, education, and publications. He must have had a fine adviser. As you prepare to begin page 1 of your vita, you realize that you need to make decisions regarding what to include and how to Standing Quo Essay include it. First, you will need to how to be healthy decide what categories to use, the Standing the Status, order in which to use them, and what information to include (and, just as important, what information to leave out). As regards categories, I suggest the following in amendment, the following order. After each, I provide an Standing the Status, example drawn from actual vitae (that have had excellent success!).

The examples are .gif files, so the text will not be perfectly sharp (yours, on the other hand, should be crisp and clear). If you are using a slow modem, be patient, as the graphics may take a bit to club load. At the end of Standing the Status Quo Essay, this page, I offer links to a couple of complete doctoral student vitaes that you may view or download. Name . Right at the top, nicely centered and in bold. Perhaps even a couple of font points larger than the document text. I think it looks nice to Competitive put Vita to the left of the page and the current term and year on Up to the right. Lets people know you're keeping up with yourself. Contact Information . Professional contact information on the left (address, office telephone, fax, email); home contact information on Google's Competitive Analysis Essay the right (address, home telephone). If you have a home page on the Internet, be sure to include the Up to the Status Quo Essay, URL. If you choose not to provide your home contact information (I don't), you may prefer to define put address on the right and the Status tel/fax/email on the left. Define The Second Amendment. In any case, be sure your vita clearly tells readers how to best contact you should they wish to.

Here are samples of each. This one with the home address and personal contact information. And this one without the home address. Note, nonetheless, that the home phone number is included. Again, that is up to you.

I don't even like the phone company having my home phone number. Education . Standing Up To The Status. List your degrees, the universities that were wise enough to grant them to you, and the year you obtained them. Include your academic major(s) and what major areas of study. If you graduated with honors or Phi Beta Kappa, include this information. If you've not yet graduated, state your status and expected date of graduation. If you are this far into the game, include the title of your dissertation and your committee chair. Don't outline. Simply include the Standing, information in a nice tight paragraph.

Most recent degrees first. Publications . Search committees at research universities are strongly interested in a candidate's publications. Consequently, this section should follow the Education section. If you are just starting out, place all your publications in what is the of light in air, one section#151;refereed articles, nonrefereed articles, chapters, book reviews. As your publications accumulate , this section will need subsections such as refereed publications, chapters in edited books, monographs and research bulletins, and the like. List publications in order of recency, with most recent publications first. Don't worry about alphabetical disorder#151;readers are most interested in what you've done for them lately. And here is a critical point: present the publications using the Quo Essay, format provided by your discipline's Publication Manual . In social science, we use the the second amendment, guidelines of the American Psychological Association [used in Up to, education, psychology, most social sciences, most sciences, medicine].

Consequently, all our publications and yeo's yogurt presentations should be written consistent with APA guidelines. If you fall under the Standing the Status, auspices of the Modern Language Association (MLA) [used in club dissociative identity disorder, the humanities, English, foreign language studies] or The Chicago Manual of Style [used in history, anthropology], or perhaps you need to use the American Sociological Association Style Guide. And take care to follow their guidelines. There should be few things more professionally embarrassing to you than revealing your ignorance of your discipline's publication guidelines right on your vita. Presentations . You've presented papers, posters, or round-tables at Standing Quo Essay, various regional and national conferences. List them here, again in order of define, recency, with most recent presentations first. Perhaps you've done invited talks at professional meetings or have been asked to be a chair or discussant of Standing Quo Essay, a particular session. If so, these should be included. Again, take care to follow your discipline's referencing format. Additional Research Experience . If you think through your doctoral experience, you will no doubt have taken part in yeo's yogurt, various research projects. Standing Up To Quo Essay. List them here.

Include official titles, names of principal investigators, your actual duties and responsibilities, dates. Order of recency again. Honors and Awards . This section may be a bit sparce at first, but, as will your publications, it will grow. If you received research funds or fellowship funds, include the amount (unless the figure is rather low, in which case who needs to know?). Think back to your Masters and Bachelors programs#151;you got stuff. We all get stuff. We love stuff. Benefits. Put the stuff down. Professional Development . Not only Standing Up to Quo Essay, have you gotten stuff, you've done stuff, you belong to dissociative identity stuff, and you know stuff. Include in this section your professional affiliations, service that you have provided your department or university, continuing education coursework you've taken.

Think back to all those wonderful committees you've suffered . Standing Up To The Status Quo Essay. I mean, served on. Perhaps you have reviewed manuscripts for journals or conference proposals for professional organizations, in which case be sure to include this information. You may want also to fight dissociative disorder include proficiency in statistical or other software programs that a prospective employer may value. College Teaching Experience . As part of your doctoral program you've no doubt been provided with the opportunity to teach. At the very least you've TA'd for one of your professors. Perhaps you've been able to teach your own class. If you've guest lectured in someone else's class, you could put this here as well. Of course, if you've done this often, it would better go in its own section.

Previous Work Experience . You had a life before you came to academia. Remember? Here's your chance to Standing Up to Quo Essay tell prospective departments what you've done before. Benefits Working. Be judicious as to what to include in this section and to how much information to provide. If you were a classroom teacher, provide the Quo Essay, name of the school, courses or levels taught, and any additional duties you undertook. Yeo's Yogurt. Be brief. There is no need to include the numerous part-time jobs that got you through college, or the Standing Up to Quo Essay, pizza deliveryt job you had throughout high school. Ask yourself, what does my prospective employer need to know about me. References . This should be the last section of is the speed of light, your vita. Provide at least three referees, but, again, more is more. You never know who knows whom, and it's wise to give readers as many names as possible to the Status contact.

Perhaps one of your referees is a long-time acquaintance of a search committee member. Who can predict these things? Be sure to include the referee's title, mail address, office phone number, and Essay email address. It goes without saying that you should seek permission from the Status Quo Essay referees before including their names on your vita. Here are some closing thoughts. A vita is your face to a crowd who can't see or hear your face. It speaks for you and about you.

How it looks and feels says something about you and about your professional habits. If it has numerous errors, omissions, and typos, it says that you are careless, inattentive to detail, and have little regard for the audience who is taking the time to examine it (and you), to whatever end. Think about this for team working, a moment: When you apply for your first position, the search committee who receives your application packet may receive over 200 application packets similar to yours. Up To. They will put all your stuff in a little folder and will place that folder in a big file-drawer filled with similar folders each filled with all the stuff from other candidates eager to beat you out for that position. At some point, tired committee members will begin the process of examining each and fight club dissociative identity disorder every folder. You will be at home sipping a gin and tonic, certain that you will be short-listed. You will not be inside your folder.

All that will be there are pieces of paper. They'd best be good pieces of paper. A vita should be adapted and tailored to Up to the Status meet your objective. For example, if you will be applying to a teaching college, it's wise to put the Competitive Essay, teaching sections first, and Standing you may even want to include information about your teaching experience that you would not include if you were applying to a research university. Competitive Analysis. Similarly, if you've worked hard and the Status garnered many awards and recognitions for your labors, you may want to yeo's yogurt move that section a leeetle tiny bit closer to the front. Fluff, filler, and padding will add girth to your vita, but they will substract class. Up To Quo Essay. Respect both the integrity and the shrewdness of your audience. A search committee can spot a padded vita immediately. Moreover, it makes you look silly and what of light desperate. More is indeed more, but you shouldn't be trying to make much ado about very little. There are many types of effective vitaes.

And you have a personality. Tailor your vita to your personality. Ask your Chair and other members of your department to Up to the Status see their vitaes. Who knows, perhaps one of them is on chartreuse paper. There are no set rules or standards in this endeavor, and, as Alexander Dumas said, all generalizations are dangerous, even this one. Or at least they should be. Stay real. I had a professor who was overly fond of the injunction that this or that activity would be a good resumé builder. That got on my nerves as a student. Yeo's Yogurt. As a professor, I find it deplorable that anyone should engage in an activity because the activity is a good resumé builder. Because, as some are prone to say, it looks good on Up to Quo Essay your vita.

Of course some things look nice on be healthy and fit a vita. Fine. Up To Quo Essay. What if you hated doing those things but your prospective employer expects you to yeo's yogurt do more of the Status, them? Follow your muse and your interests. What a prospective employer sees should be what a prospective employer gets. And that should be the real you. Let others worry about building their resumés. You worry about building your character and your life through your interests and your strengths. And . dare I use such an abused word . through your passions. Revisit your vita often! Given enough time, it's easy to forget what you've done and when.

Well, I hope this was helpful. All that remains is for me to provide you with samples of benefits of effective working, vitaes that are good exemplars and Up to the Status with links to sites on the web that provide information about creating academic vitaes. First the yeo's yogurt, sample vitaes. The Status Quo Essay. All are PDF files. If you do not have it, click here to download the free Acrobat PDF Reader. It may be helpful also for Standing Up to, you to have a look at the vitaes of of light in air, some established scholars.

Here are some links to Standing Quo Essay vitaes available on-line (from some pretty hefty names). In some cases, the scholar has placed the vita on-line as an html document, which means that you shouldn't pay attention to benefits working the format of the vita. It's difficult to format an html document in the same way you will format your own vita. The more important thing to pay attention to in these vitaes are the categories that the Quo Essay, scholars have created and what they typically include in yeo's yogurt, these categories. Of course, these are all similar to what your own vita will look like in just a couple of years. Prof. Tim Urdan, Santa Clara University (PDF file) Prof. Robert Sternberg, Yale University (html file and Word document)

Prof. Gary Natriello, Teachers College, Columbia University (html file) And last but not least, here are a few sites on the Web that provide information on Standing the Status Quo Essay creating a vita. essay image virtue Native Americans and the Land. Wilderness and Standing, American Identity. The Use of the Land. Native Americans and the Land Essays. American Indians: The Image of the Indian.

Nature Transformed is of effective working made possible by grants from the Standing the Status Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. American Indians: The Image of the Indian. Department of History. University of Competitive Essay Victoria, British Columbia. National Humanities Center. An early twentieth-century elementary school textbook quizzed pupils on their grasp of the lesson devoted to Standing Quo Essay, American Indians. It was a time of unblushing certainty about the club identity superiority of civilization to “savagery.” “In what three ways were the Up to the Status Quo Essay Indians different from the white men,” the school text asked, and “What did the white people think of the Indians?” Judging from related questions, the correct answer was that the Indians were strange : What was one of the strangest things that the Indians did? What strange things did the Indians believe about spirits?

What strange things did the club dissociative identity Indians do to drive the Up to the Status Quo Essay evil spirits away? Today it is dissociative difficult even to talk about the racial stereotypes once so confidently assumed. Stereotyping as a subject for study may be historical, but the emotions it arouses are eminently present day. Whether we use terms like image, stereotype or construct, we are talking about the Up to same thing: ideas about a particular group that serve to characterize all the individuals within that group. The Second? Certain ideas entrench themselves as fundamental, and Quo Essay, the rule of thumb is that such ideas are invariably self-servingthey promote the interests of the group that holds them, and they form the reality upon which that group acts. It is a given today that the idea of the identity disorder American Indian has been historically significant.

It shaped the attitudes of Up to the Status Quo Essay those in yeo's yogurt, the nineteenth century who shaped Indian policy. Indian policybe it removal of the Eastern tribes in the 1830s, reservation isolationism beginning in the 1850s, or allotment of reservation lands and assimilation in the 1880scannot be understood without an awareness of the Quo Essay ideas behind it. Benefits Team? Literature and Up to the Status Quo Essay, the visual arts provide revealing guides to nineteenth-century assumptions about the Indian. Traditionally, Indians were divided into two “types”: noble and ignoble savages. The Indian woman was either a princess or a drudge, the Indian man an admirable brave or a fiendish warrior. These venerable images, dating back to the earliest European contact with American natives, found their most influential literary expression in James Fenimore Cooper’s 1826 novel Last of the benefits of effective Mohicans . Cooper personified good and bad by Standing Up to tribe and individualthe noble Delawares Uncas and his father Chingachgook, the evil Hurons Magua and Google's, his “bloody-minded hellhounds.” Lasting influence? Students might be encouraged to watch the 1992 Daniel Day-Lewis movie Last of the Mohicans a very free adaptation of Cooper’s novel. Better yet, have them watch Dances with Wolves . Standing Up To The Status Quo Essay? It won the Academy Award for define the second Best Picture in 1990, and was a crowd favorite. Besides a sympathetic white hero in line with Cooper’s own Natty Bumppo, it starkly contrasts “good” Indians (the ever-so-noble Lakotas) and Standing Up to the Status Quo Essay, “bad” Indians (the villainous Pawnees, with their roach-cuts and face paint making them look like English “punks” on a rampage).

The stark contrast between the be healthy noble and ignoble savage obscures their common denominator: savagery . Savagery referred to a state of social development below civilization and, in some calculations, below an intermediate step, barbarism. Since savagery was inferior to civilization, the reasoning went; a savage was naturally inferior to Up to the Status Quo Essay, a civilized person. The noble savage might be admired for certain rude virtues, and the ignoble savage deplored as brutal and bloody-minded, but the is the fate of each was identical. In time, both would vanish from the Up to the Status Quo Essay face of the earth as civilization, in fight identity disorder, accordance with the universal law of progress, displaced savagery. The ending of Dances with Wolves echoes this sentiment as an admirable culture, unaware of inexorable fate, is Up to the Status Quo Essay about to be swept away by amendment a more progressive but less admirable one. Swept away.

Such was the theory of the Vanishing American. It held out no long-term hope for Indians, noble or ignoble, unless they could be civilized . Sadly, many Americans in the first half of the nineteenth-century concluded, they could not. For there was another law at the Status, work when civilization met savagery, the law of vices and virtues. In confronting white civilization, the reasoning went, Indians lost their savage virtuesindependence, hospitality, couragewhile retaining only their savage vices; worse yet, they added civilization’s vices to the mixture, ignoring civilization’s virtues. This lethal combination of savage vices and civilized vices ensured the Indians’ extinction. The artist George Catlin (17961872), who based his entire body of workincluding over how to and fit, 500 paintings done in the 1830s and several books recounting his travelson the theory of the Vanishing American, provided a vivid description of the the Status process at fight club dissociative identity, work: In traversing the immense regions of the Classic West , the mind of a Philanthropist is Standing filled to the brim with feelings of admiration; but to reach this country, one is obliged to descend from the of effective team working light and glow of civilized atmosphere, through the different grades of civilization, which gradually sink to the most deplorable vice and darkness along our frontier; thence through the most pitiable misery and wretchedness of the Status savage degradation, where the genius of natural liberty and independence have been blasted and destroyed by the contaminating vices and dissipations of fight club identity civilized society. Through this dark and sunken vale of wretchedness one hurries as through a pestilence, until he gradually rises again into the proud and heroic elegance of savage society, in a state of pure and original nature, beyond the reach of civilized contamination Even here, the Up to predominant passions of the savage breast, of treachery and cruelty, are often found, yet restrained and frequently subdued by the noblest traits of honor and magnanimity,a race of and fit men who live and Up to Quo Essay, enjoy life and its luxuries, and practice its virtues, very far beyond the usual estimations of the world From the first settlements of our Atlantic coast to yeo's yogurt, the present day, the bane of Standing the Status this blasting frontier has regularly crowded upon them, from the northern to the southern extremities of our country, and, like the fire in a mountain, which destroys every thing where it passes, it has blasted and sunk them, and all but their names, into oblivion, wherever it has traveled. Pigeon’s Egg Head (The Light) going to. and returning from Washington.

Courtesy of Smithsonian American Art Institute Alcohol symbolized the fatal exchange: it turned once noble savages into fight club identity disorder “the poor, degraded, and humbled specimens which alone can be seen along our frontiers.” Resistance was futile. Should the Indians accept the inevitable and embrace civilization, they would be destroyed by its vices; should they resist civilization and go to war, they would be destroyed by its avenging sword. Not everyone accepted such a grim prognosis. Missionaries always rejected the notion of Standing the Status a race created for extinction, and insisted that substituting good example for is the speed in air bad would find the Indians’ gratefully embracing civilization’s virtues and spurning its vices. Even Catlin held out Standing the Status Quo Essay, hope. “The protecting arm of government,” he insisted, “could easily shield them from vices, and civilize them (if necessary) with virtues.” Nevertheless, the thrust of popular opinion, like his own, cleaved to yeo's yogurt, the notion of Standing a vanishing race. “This wild, but noble and unhappy race, is rapidly becoming extinct,” a New York newspaper editorialized in 1837:

They are rapidly sinking into the stream of oblivion, and soon nothing of them will remain but the memory of their past existence and glory. Where are now the descendants of club dissociative Powhattan, the father of Pocahontas, or Tamenend and Up to, of Pontiac? Alas! They are blotted from the face of the earth, or swallowed up in the remnants of other tribes. Science buttressed popular understanding of the Indian. In the middle of the be healthy nineteenth century, polygenesisthe theory of multiple creation of human “types”provided a race-based explanation for permanent differences in racial capacity, thereby reinforcing notions about the incompatibility of savagery and civilization. However, polygenesis clashed with religious orthodoxy, which denied the Up to separate creation of races. All humans shared an innate capacity for improvement; no race was intended for extinction.

Later, evolutionary theorists, in advancing the case for survival of the fittest, gave new credence to the tradition of the define amendment Vanishing Indian, since there had to be losers as well as winners in the struggle for survival. JH Colton, New York, 1855. Ruderman Antique Maps Inc. Artists after Catlin also doted on this theme. One popular motif showed the vanguard of civilization scattering Indians and wild animals before its irresistible advance; another placed Indians on a bluff gazing down with melancholy resignation on the thriving civilization below. Progress had made them outcasts in their own land. Standing Up To Quo Essay? As for the contrasting images of noble and ignoble savage, expansion rendered the fight dissociative former something of an Standing Up to the Status Quo Essay, Eastern monopoly, the latter a Western one, while the Vanishing American subsumed both.

from Harper’s New Monthly. Magazine , June 1867. Courtesy of Cornell UniversityThus, ambivalence marked Indian imagery at the end of the nineteenth century. In the long struggle for mastery of the continent, the image of the bloody savage had always qualified any regret occasioned by of effective team working the passing of the noble savage. Up To? After the frontier moment ended, however, Americans could look upon their native peoples with sentimental regret. It was a short step from celebrating the heroic white pioneers who “won the Google's Competitive Analysis West” to mourning the losers who, once resistance was over, served as poignant symbols of the cost of progress. James Earle Fraser in 1894 translated popular sentiment into a sculpture of lasting appeal.

End of the Trail shows a mounted Plains Indian, head bowed, shoulders slumped, his spear pointing at Standing, the ground, resigned to his fate, which was that of his race. This was the nineteenth century’s legacy to the twentieth, fusing the noble savage with the Vanishing American to create a timeless Indian symbolizing a past already receding into pure nostalgia. Guiding Student Discussion. Racial stereotyping is a minefield, and entering it for purposes of classroom discussion requires a carefully thought out of effective, strategy. The truth is Standing the Status that students are often impatient with the dissociative disorder past. They cannot see why people “back then” got everything so wrong, and they tend to judge them, rather than attempt the more difficultand, we historians like to think, more rewarding!task of understanding why people were the way they were, and why they thought the way they did. In order to discuss historical stereotypes, you have to Up to Quo Essay, introduce students to them. This runs the what is the in air risk of coming across as advocacy. Indeed, in raising anything historically unpleasant, you may be held responsible for the resulting unpleasantnessit would not exist had you not mentioned it! Having introduced stereotypes, you are left to deal with them. Outright condemnation is Standing Up to the Status Quo Essay easy, since it conforms to what students already think.

Anything more challenging runs even greater risks. Let me (literally!) illustrate the problem. You want to talk about stereotypes of African Americans and American Indians, so you show your class a cartoon of an African American eating watermelon and a photograph of a cigar store Indian. If your point is simply that these images prove the ignorance of EuroAmericans in the past, then you will have no controversy. If you introduce the same images to probe the amendment underlying values of a society that considered them acceptable, then you invite controversy. Why did EuroAmericans stereotype African Americans as servile and American Indians as stoic freemen? And to what ends? What use did the EuroAmerican majority have for each race? The labor of Standing the Status one, of course, and Analysis Essay, the land of the other. How would those different uses shape stereotypes? In short, what can stereotypes teach us that would make them valuable in the classroom?

What can they tell us beyond the Standing the Status Quo Essay obvious? Students may remain un-persuaded. When it comes to a sensitive issue like ethnic stereotyping, it’s just easier to yeo's yogurt, dismiss past beliefs as racist. Standing The Status Quo Essay? What else is there to say? Why study the attitudes of another age if, by and fit our standards today, they were deplorable? The answer is in that qualifier“ by the Status our standards today .” It is essential to recognize that people in the past were as confident of the validity of their views as we are of our own. Moral certainty underlay their actions, too. Far from being illogical, they were, according to how to be healthy and fit, their lights, entirely logical! And that’s a good departure point for discussion. In talking about past values, students should be encouraged to examine their own values.

How are attitudes formed? How do we know what we know? How does experience shape our views? More than thatand hardest of allstudents must be challenged to understand that their most cherished beliefs will one day, too, be part of history. People not yet born will study us and analyze our valuesand they just may find us wanting.

Far from making us feel superior, then, history should chasten us. The past has been described as a foreign country. We must visit it with open minds and all due respect for its customs, eager to learn, not simply to judge. Thus Bryan Le Beau, writing about the the Status Quo Essay Salem witch trials, reminds us “the people of seventeenth-century New England believed in what of light in air, witchcraft not because they were Puritans, but because they were men of their time.” And James McPherson, reviewing a book condemning Abraham Lincoln as a racist, observes that Lincoln “shared many of the racist convictions of his time,” but considered slavery “morally wrong” and was able “to transcend his prejudices and to preside over the greatest social revolution in Up to the Status Quo Essay, American history, the liberation of four million slaves.” People from the past will never conform to present-day standards; if we would understand them, we must grant them their own worldview in order to define amendment, evaluate their actions and to draw the critical distinctions that are the Standing Up to Quo Essay heart and soul of history. Other, more narrowly focused issues will also probably emerge in any class discussion of the image of the benefits of effective working Indian.

Students like to distinguish “good” from “bad”. Initially, they may consider all stereotypes bad because they conceal something good, the real Indian. The Status? Two lines of questioning suggest themselves: First, what was/is the “real” Indian? Do we define an Indian racially, by “blood quantum”? Or by an allegiance to benefits team, traditional culture? Or by federal status (reservation/nonreservation)? How do we define a “real” Indian? Second, are some stereotypes more acceptable than others?

That is, are positive stereotypes better than negative onesthe noble savage more acceptable than the ignoble savage? It’s here that Dances with Wolves can be helpful. Besides engaging students in a discussion about the longevity of old stereotypes, it raises another issue: Aren’t the Lakotas in the film just updated noble savages, representing the socially acceptable values of the 1990s grafted onto the latest version of the Vanishing American? Just because the Lakotas get to be the good guys in Dances with Wolves , is it okay to stereotype them-or to see them off with tear-dimmed eyes at Standing the Status, movie’s end as, faithful to the tradition of the vanishing race, they await the destruction of their way of life? Class discussion of Indian images may also pursue another line of questioning. Granted stereotypes like the club dissociative noble and ignoble savage and the Vanishing American, who, in particular, believed themand how do you show that they believed them? Citing a few heavyweight thinkers proves little, and smacks of elitism. How about ordinary people? What did they thinkand how do we know? Here the popular culture of any given period is relevant.

Today we would look at the electronic media, films, music, etc.; in studying the Standing Up to the Status Quo Essay nineteenth century, students might examine folk tales and humor, newspapers, popular fiction, Currier Ives prints, advertising cards, sermons, etc. At the very least, the sheer pervasiveness of the major Indian stereotypes in popular culture will be a revelation to yeo's yogurt, most students. Students may then want to know how the public’s belief in noble and ignoble savages and the Vanishing American mattered historically. Given that people held certain views about Standing the Status Quo Essay Indians, So what? How do we prove that those views caused anything in particular to happen in a specific situation? This is the same challenge that has always faced intellectual historiansestablishing the link between idea and action.

It is useful to remind students at the outset that ideas are as real as any other historical data. Since history itself is a mental exercise, the historian can hardly deny people in the past a fully active mental life of their own. As a general proposition, what people believe explains what they do. When, for example, Congressmen in the nineteenth century debated Indian affairs and yeo's yogurt, referred to the bloody savage to promote an aggressive policy, or talked about a noble race that had been dispossessed to the Status, advocate a humanitarian policy, we can see a belief system at work with direct, practical consequences. To sum up, historians do not defend what was done in the name of past beliefs.

They are not apologists or advocates. But historians must labor to understand past beliefs if they would understand what happened in the past. Ideas are often self-fulfilling prophecies: historically, they make happen what they say will happen. And historical stereotypes of the yeo's yogurt American Indian have done exactly that. Almost fifty years ago, Roy Harvey Pearce, a literary scholar, in the Status Quo Essay, his book The Savages of America: A Study of the Indian and the Idea of Civilization (1953; rev. ed., Savagism and Civilization: A Study of the define the second Indian and the American Mind , 1965), stated the assumption still fundamental to any examination of the image of the American Indian. In talking about Indians, he wrote, white Americans “were only talking to themselves about themselves.” Stereotypes, in the Status Quo Essay, short, tell us more about the benefits of effective working perceiver than the perceived. Every historical study of Indian images since has worked a variation on Pearce’s premise, be it “the white man’s Indian” (Robert Berkhofer, The White Man’s Indian: Images of the the Status Quo Essay American Indian from Columbus to the Present [1978]), “the Vanishing American” (Brian W. Dippie, The Vanishing American: White Attitudes and U.S.

Indian Policy [1982]), “the invented Indian” (James Clifton, ed., The Invented Indian: Cultural Fictions and Government Policies [1990]), “the imaginary Indian” (Daniel Francis, The Imaginary Indian: The Image of the Indian in Canadian Culture [1992]), or “the constructed Indian” (Elizabeth S. Amendment? Bird, ed., Dressing in Standing, Feathers: The Construction of the what in air Indian in American Popular Culture [1996]). Overviews of Indian stereotyping in the nineteenth century should be supplemented with case studies such as Sherry L. Smith’s The View from Officers’ Row: Army Perceptions of Western Indians (1990) and Reimagining Indians: Native Americans through Anglo Eyes, 18801940 (2000) and Quo Essay, John M. Coward’s The Newspaper Indian: Native American Identity in the Press, 182090 (1999). All go to prove the pervasiveness of James Fenimore Cooper’s influence in the nineteenth centuryand since. Define? Many Westerners (and some army officers), for example, fancied themselves realists when it came to Indians, and routinely denounced Cooper’s Uncas and the whole sentimental tradition of the noble savage as a palpable fictioneven as they embraced Magua and the Status Quo Essay, the ignoble savage as unvarnished truth! Historians have given particular attention to be healthy and fit, the “So what?” questionthat is, to correlating attitudes and Standing the Status Quo Essay, their practical consequences, often through policy developments. As can be seen, they have had much to say on the subject of Indian stereotyping. But because of the seminal influence of Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans in how to be healthy, giving memorable form to the noble savage, bloody savage and the Vanishing American, students of American literature continue to the Status, lead the Google's Analysis way in probing Indian stereotypes.

A readable, accessible book is Louise K. Barnett’s The Ignoble Savage: American Literary Racism, 17901890 (1975). It, and Richard Slotkin’s seminal work fusing literature and history, Regeneration through Violence: The Mythology of the American Frontier, 16001860 (1973), point the way to recent “cultural studies” offering sometimes imaginative, sometimes tendentious readings of literary texts that advance the “postcolonialist” critique of American culture. For those who want to Up to, test the waters, a number of titles come to mind: Lucy Maddox’s Removals: Nineteenth-century American Literature the Politics of Indian Affairs (1991), Robert S. Yeo's Yogurt? Tilton’s Pocahontas: The Evolution of an Standing Up to the Status Quo Essay, American Narrative (1994), Cheryl Walker’s Indian Nation: Native American Literature and 19th-Century Nationalisms (1997), Susan Scheckel’s The Insistence of the Indian: Race and Nationalism in Nineteenth-century American Culture (1998) and Renee L. What Speed In Air? Bergland’s The National Uncanny: Indian Ghosts and American Subjects (2000). Martin Barker and Roger Sabin’s The Lasting of the Mohicans: History of an Up to, American Myth (1995) documents the growth industry created by how to be healthy and fit one novel over the years, while Alan Trachtenberg’s Shades of Hiawatha: Staging Indians, Making Americans, 18801930 (2004) uses the most famous Indian poem ever written, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Hiawatha (1855), as a launching pad for a broad-gauged investigation of Up to the Status Indian and immigrant stereotypes in the twentieth century. The image of the Indian in art has been comparatively neglected. Two illustrated essays provide different interpretations. Julie Schimmel’s “Inventing ‘the Indian,’” in William Truettner, ed., The West as America: Reinterpreting Images of the Frontier (1991), stresses the construction of the “Indian” in what is the of light, nineteenth-century art, while Brian Dippie’s “The Moving Finger Writes: Western Art and the Dynamics of Change,” in Jules Prown, et al., Discovered Lands, Invented Pasts: Transforming Visions of the Up to the Status American West (1992), focuses on visual representations of the how to be healthy fate of the Indian. Two well-illustrated exhibition catalogs examining relevant issues are Jehanne Teilhet-Fisk and Robin F. Nigh, comps., Dimensions of Native America: The Contact Zone (1998), and Sarah E. Boehme, et al., Powerful Images: Portrayals of Native America (1998). Steven Conn’s History’s Shadow: Native Americans and Up to, Historical Consciousness in the Nineteenth Century (2004) includes a chapter on “Indians in American Art.”

There has been a growth industry in Edward S. Curtis’s romantic, turn of the speed twentieth-century photographs of American Indians. Barbara Davis’s Edward S. Standing The Status Quo Essay? Curtis: The Life and Times of a Shadow Catcher (1985) is the most substantial of the many Curtis picture books, and define the second amendment, students always enjoy looking at Standing Quo Essay, his work. However, Curtis’s role in perpetuating the myth of the how to be healthy Vanishing American has also generated criticism. Christopher M. Lyman’s The Vanishing Race and Other Illusions: Photographs of Indians by Standing the Status Quo Essay Edward S. Curtis (1982) fired the the second amendment opening salvo by documenting the ways Curtis manipulated his subjects to create images of the Standing Quo Essay timeless Indian. Paula Fleming and Judith Luskey’s Grand Endeavors of American Indian Photography (1993) is useful for placing Curtis in context, while Mick Gidley’s Edward S. Fight Club Dissociative? Curtis and the North American Indian, Incorporated (1998) analyzes Curtis’s commercial strategies in producing his photographic record of the Western tribes. A critical approach to the Curtis photographs permits access to the ideas behind them.

Not surprisingly, the Standing Up to the Status noble savage and the Vanishing American lurk just beneath their appealing surfaces. The perpetuation of Indian stereotypes in the twentieth century will naturally arise in any classroom discussion of nineteenth-century stereotypes. Students invariably turn to film, television, and define amendment, music as sources for Standing Up to Quo Essay their own ideas, and I have already mentioned the working usefulness of a film like Dances with Wolves in stimulating interest. Consequently, the literature on cinema as a source for Up to the Status Indian stereotypes may prove relevant. The most recent studies (with up-to-date bibliographies) are Peter Rollins and fight club dissociative disorder, John O’Connor’s Hollywood’s Indian: The Portrayal of the Native American in Up to, Film (1998), Jacquelyn Kilpatrick’s Celluloid Indians: Native Americans and Film (1999), and club identity, Armando José Prats’ Invisible Natives: Myth and Identity in the American Western (2002). More broadly, twentieth-century popular culture and Standing Quo Essay, the Indian figure into the Elizabeth Bird anthology Dressing in Feathers , as well as Rennard Strickland’s Tonto’s Revenge: Reflections on how to be healthy and fit American Indian Culture and Policy (1997), Ward Churchill’s polemical Fantasies of the Master Race: Literature, Cinema, and the Colonization of the Status Quo Essay American Indians (1998), and yeo's yogurt, Philip J. Deloria’s engaging exposé of stereotypes, Indians in Standing Up to the Status, Unexpected Places (2004).

But in what is the of light in air, bringing the subject of Indian stereotypes in Standing Up to the Status, literature and art up to the present, it seems to me useful to end with something elsethe contemporary American Indian voice. Besides the gritty, realistic novels of such esteemed Native writers as N. Scott Momaday, Louise Erdrich, James Welch and Leslie Marmon Silko, I recommend Sherman Alexie’s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1993), a collection of short stories that keep an eagle eye on some of the absurdities of Indian stereotyping, and Google's Analysis, that served as the basis for Smoke Signals (1998), another film your students should see. A final recommendation: Thomas King’s Medicine River (1989), a sly, amusing novel thatbeginning with its protagonist, a Native photographersends up many of the hoary stereotypes of the American Indian. Brian W. Dippie is Up to Quo Essay Professor of History at define, University of Victoria, British Columbia, and past president of the Western History Association. He is the Standing Up to Quo Essay author of Custer’s Last Stand: The Anatomy of an American Myth (1976), The Vanishing American: White Attitudes and U.S. Benefits Of Effective Working? Indian Policy (1982), Catlin and His Contemporaries: The Politics of Patronage (1990), and Standing, The Frederic Remington Art Museum Collection (2001). He has also contributed to numerous other volumes and edited or co-authored several volumes on the art and be healthy, artists of the American West.
