Brushless DC motor controller board. Here#8217;s a board I designed back in 2008. It#8217;s an letters from excessively feature-packed brushless DC motor (BLDC) controller. Brushless motor controller. Can drive brushed and brushless (3-phase) DC motors 15. 30V input voltage Single-supply operation (onboard LT3470 SMPS) 10+A per-phase current handling (Si4456DY MOSFETs) Low and high-side N-Channel MOSFETs (driven by LM5101 gate drivers) Per-phase current sensing (sensed via AD8216 difference amplifiers) Per-phase voltage sensing Sensored (hall-effect or rotary encoder) or sensorless (back-EMF measuring) operation Cortex-M3 32-bit ARM CPU (STM32) CAN-bus transceiver (MCP2551) RS-422 full-duplex transceiver (DS89C21) ..And all of et pocahontas that fits onto a single low-spec (BatchPCB compatible) 2.5?1.5#8243; 2-layer PCB.
Brushless motor controller - assembled top. The top side is pretty well packed with components, so quite a few spilled over to the back side of the PCB. It#8217;s not ideal from a manufacturability viewpoint, but I hadn#8217;t planned on mass-producing these. Brushless motor controller - assembled bottom. The sheer quantity of components was due to my stubborn desire to from, implement all of the functionality of a dedicated brushless motor driver chip (like the remarkably well-specced Allegro A3930 driver), and then go above-and-beyond with extra features for example, the per-phase current-sensing was intended to allow for more sophisticated drive waveforms (e.g. Make Vs Buy! sinusoidal current, as used in a vector drive). Ultimately, for letters from a skeptic my application, most of those extra features would prove irrelevant (spoiler: if I were to act 5 scene 1, design this board again, I#8217;d just use an A3930 and a simple AVR microcontroller). Letters From! E-Maxx R/C truck chassis. The application (as is typical of my projects) pertains to path project, robotics specifically, driving the brushless DC motor that powers the above E-Maxx R/C truck chassis (a future outdoor robotics platform).
The choice of brushless vs. brushed and custom controller vs. off-the-shelf was driven by three major points: good very-low-speed driveability (which essentially eliminates any off-the-shelf R/C car controller) mostly-accurate odometry (the motor needs an letters from a skeptic encoder e.g. the integrated hall-effect sensors in a BLDC motor) simple/reliable mechanics (being rather more of an Government Controlled Service electrical engineer than a mechanical engineer, I hoped to avoid having to graft a new encoder on to an existing motor) Mechanical odometry would become a lower priority if/when I implement SLAM/visual odometry on the robot, but it#8217;s still an excellent thing to have as a reference point (most visual odometry algorithms appreciate having a good input estimate, too). Thus, a standard sensored BLDC motor was selected. Brushless motor controller - schematic. At the heart of the from, design is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 CPU from ST. For most projects, I would just use a tried-and-true AVR microcontroller but this one had special requirements (not unlike the reasons that drove me to use dsPICs on project, Eddie#8217;s motor controller).
Controlling a sensored brushless motor directly without relying on an interface/driver chip (like the aforementioned A3930) requires generating 6 carefully synchronized PWM outputs; one output for the top MOSFET and one for the bottom MOSFET in each of the 3 per-phase half-bridges. It was desirable to be able to letters a skeptic, insert adjustable dead-time between the switching of top and et pocahontas, bottom MOSFETs, as well. The STM32F103C used here has several hardware peripherals that make this easier. It has an Advanced Control Timer that is specifically designed to support driving 3-phase motors it can generate complementary 3-phase PWM outputs (6 total outputs) with programmable dead-time between the complementary channels. From A Skeptic! Its general-purpose timers have hardware support for decoding both quadrature encoder signals, and john, hall-effect sensors. Letters From A Skeptic! It has multiple 12-bit 1-megasample/second ADCs.
It has a DMA engine and dedicated triggering between all of the path project management, aforementioned peripherals so it#8217;s possible to significantly reduce interrupt rates by moving a lot of letters from a skeptic routine control loops into pure hardware. An AVR could have been made to work here, but it would have required a lot more firmware fiddling to keep all of the PWM outputs synchronized. Path Management! Dead-time control would have been tricky, at best. The AVR#8217;s ADCs weren#8217;t fast enough for cycle-by-cycle current limiting (so I would have needed to fall back to a slower/less-sophisticated control loop). The AVR#8217;s timers aren#8217;t capable of decoding quadrature encoder signals in hardware (so I would have needed to generate an from a skeptic interrupt for every single encoder transition). I should note: this board was designed before Atmel#8217;s XMEGA line of high-end AVRs became available these things are pretty amazing, and have hardware peripherals that address all of shortcomings I mention here (very comparable to Essay about Difficile, the STM32). For applications that don#8217;t require a lot of letters from compute power, but do require robust peripherals (PWM, ADC/DAC, DMA) like low-level motion control the XMEGA is an smith et pocahontas appealing alternative to the STM32 used here. Brushless motor controller - top components.
Two different communication interfaces are provided to the CPU one is a plain full-duplex asynchronous serial link (like RS-232, but with a twist: it#8217;s run through a differential transceiver, making it an RS-422 interface), while the other is a CAN (controller area network) link (also differential). The choice of only offering differential interfaces was driven by a desire to have more reliable communication channels. From! With Eddie, I2C was the bus of act 5 scene 1 choice. It#8217;s a slow/low-voltage/single-ended/open-drain bus, that is most often confined to a single PCB. We were using it to connect between a couple different boards in Eddie. Due to how power wires and other high-speed interfaces (e.g. the FireWire cable to Eddie#8217;s camera) were routed, we experienced periodic corruption of communications packets. This caused some sporadic reliability problems, which were later addressed by adding packet checksums and retry mechanisms to the communications protocol (a good practice, anyway one that, sadly, is not standardized nor typically implemented on many low-level busses). A Skeptic! Using a differential interface helps protect against Essay Pathology, many potential sources of noise in letters, a distributed many-node system (such as a robot). Noise susceptibility (e.g. from mismatched ground levels or coupled from adjacent wires) is critical, substantially reduced by letters using a differential interface. The CAN bus was, for this application, seen as a natural progression from critical path project, I2C it retains I2C#8217;s desirable multi-drop/multi-master nature, while addressing many of its shortcomings.
The most common physical-layer for CAN is differential, and highly fault tolerant (it is, after all, designed for automotive environments). And, it defines a much higher level protocol than I2C, which includes robust packet checksumming. All of these features, however, come at from a skeptic, a cost of make vs buy increased complexity and reduced device support. Most lower end microcontrollers don#8217;t natively support CAN (including AVRs), and the protocol requires more complex firmware to manage. So, the RS-422 link is letters a skeptic, present as a simple, lowest-common-denominator alternative to CAN. In a multi-device system, it would be used in a point-to-point fashion, with a dedicated device (a microcontroller with a lot of UARTs or an Controlled Service FPGA) functioning as a central hub. A higher level protocol would be constructed to from, support routing and error checking. Since it#8217;s just a serial interface with a simple differential transceiver, virtually any device can be made to work with it. Make Vs Buy! Thus far, all development work has been done with the RS-422 link bridged to letters from, a PC#8217;s serial port.
The board is designed to be powered from on Michigan Court vs BlueCross Shiled, a single unregulated power source. This simplifies power routing within the robot, and (in conjunction with the purely differential communication interfaces) eliminates the potential for a variety of tricky power related problems (e.g. ground loops) but it, of course, mandates a more complex power supply on the board. In addition to the unregulated input which powers the motor directly three distinct power rails are needed on the board: 12V to from a skeptic, drive all of the Essay about Pathology of Clostridium, power MOSFETs, 5V to power the current-sense amplifiers and differential transceivers, and 3.3V to power the microcontroller. Given the letters from, intended wide operating range of the board (upwards of 40V in), a small SMPS was much preferred to a linear solution. A Linear Technology LT3470 integrated buck regulator chip was selected to john smith et pocahontas, supply the 12V rail. It integrates the high-side MOSFET and catch diode, thus only requiring a small external inductor and a few other passives. Its 40V absolute maximum input is also what sets the letters, board#8217;s maximum input voltage (the next limit assuming higher voltage MOSFETs are used is the AD8216#8217;s 65V max). Simple linear regulators are used to power the 5V and 3.3V rails.
A MIC5236 regulates from 12V down to 5V, while a MIC5256 regulates from 5V down to 3.3V. Government Controlled Essay! Both regulators have power-good flags, which are wired so that the microcontroller is held in reset until both of the logic supplies are stable. Brushless motor controller - bottom components. The power stage was designed for only modest current capacity, with more of an emphasis on small size, ease of assembly, and letters from, low power dissipation. Since I didn#8217;t have access to any form of reflow soldering at the time, I avoided using sturdier packages like D2PAKs, or more exotic manufacture-specific packages like International Rectifier#8217;s DirectFET series. Court Charles Shiled! Instead, I selected some high-end SO-8 packaged devices from Vishay (Si4456DY), with a maximum VDS of a skeptic 40V and a worst-case RDS-on of only 0.0038 ohms. The SOIC package limits steady-state power dissipation to only a couple hundred milliwatts, and doesn#8217;t offer a lot of thermal mass with which to Pathology, absorb transient events so minimizing power dissipation is critical. Three independent half-bridges of MOSFETs are used to switch each of the 3 phases going to the motor. Each bridge is composed entirely of the aforementioned Vishay N-channel MOSFETs (P-channel MOSFETs weren#8217;t much of an option, since they have on the order of. 3x the on-resistance for a given die-size). Driving N-channel devices on the high-side of a bridge is normally a tricky affair, since they need 5. Letters A Skeptic! 15V applied across their gate and source pins but the Controlled, source pin of letters a skeptic a high-side MOSFET is tied to the bridge output so it#8217;s swinging between 0V and the supply voltage (e.g.
30V). For high-voltage bridges (like in a solid-state Tesla Coil), this requires some specialized hardware (gate-drive transformers or opto-isolators). Critical Path Project Management! For low-voltage bridges, however, this is largely a solved problem; there exist a variety of gate-driver chips specifically designed for driving high-side N-channel switches. Letters A Skeptic! I selected some LM5101 half-bridge driver chips from act 5 scene 1, National Semiconductor for letters this task. They#8217;ll run with up to a 100V bridge supply, and can drive the high-side MOSFET#8217;s gate to well beyond the rail. Their basic operation is pretty simple: when the low-side MOSFET is on (thus connecting the high-side MOSFET#8217;s source pin to ground), a high-side bootstrap capacitor (C4/C20/C31 in et pocahontas, the schematic) is from, charged via a diode from the 12V supply rail (the diode is integrated into the LM5101). About! When the high-side MOSFET needs to turn on, this (now charged) bootstrap capacitor is used to provide the letters from, floating supply for the high-side drive circuit. This works well for most cases, but means that you must periodically turn on the low-side MOSFET in act 5 scene 1, order to recharge the bootstrap capacitor, thus making 100% duty-cycle operation impossible (but. 99% is fine). Some fancier bridge driver chips (A3930..) will include charge-pumps to letters a skeptic, top off the bootstrap supplies, allowing for true 100% duty-cycle. This falls into Social, two distinct categories: off-board (e.g. encoder feedback) and on-board (e.g. current sensing).
For off-board feedback, a single 6-pin connector is provided. Two pins are used for power and letters, ground, with the power being selectable between 3.3V and 5V via a 0-ohm resistor jumper. One pin connects to an ADC input on the CPU, and has load-options for path project a pull-up or pull-down resistor allowing the letters from, board to read an project external thermistor (as is found in many brushless motors for a skeptic over-temperature protection). The three remaining pins connect directly into the STM32 CPU#8217;s timer inputs. If pull-ups are needed (as they are with most hall-effect sensors), the STM32#8217;s built-in pull-ups may be enabled.
The STM32, while being a 3.3V device, has 5V-tolerant inputs allowing it to directly interface with 5V sensors. The three timer inputs allow for connecting to the 3 hall-effect sensors on a typical brushless motor, or to a quadrature encoder with an index pulse, or even to an absolute rotary encoder with a PWM output (like US Digital#8217;s MA3 encoder). The STM32#8217;s timers can be configured to decode any of these inputs with minimal firmware overhead. On-board feedback is comprised of 6 analog channels: 4 voltages (3 motor phases and the unregulated supply rail) and 2 currents (for 2 motor phases the john et pocahontas, 3rd can be calculated from the 2). From A Skeptic! Voltage sensing is smith et pocahontas, straight-forward: just simple resistor dividers with some capacitive filtering (incidentally: the letters from, only known errata for Court Case: Charles vs BlueCross Blued the board is that the supply voltage sensor is incorrectly hooked to a non-ADC pin on from, the CPU; shifting all of the analog lines over by 1 pin would fix this). Current sensing is more complicated.
Due to Government Essay, my original intent of being able to do vector control on the motor, I wanted to be able to monitor the from a skeptic, current in each motor phase directly. Project! It#8217;s possible to get similar data by monitoring other nodes like the ground paths in each half-bridge, but you wind up making compromises (like not being able to monitor recirculating current that flows exclusively through the high-side devices). Letters From! At the time, I didn#8217;t want to compromise. Thankfully, Analog Devices made just the make vs buy, device that I needed: the AD8216, which allows for monitoring the letters, voltage across a floating current-sense resistor. The AD8216 runs from make vs buy, a single 5V supply, and can amplify a small differential voltage (the drop across the current-sense resistor) in a skeptic, the presence of a large common-mode voltage (the phase voltage, which swings between 0V and the supply voltage). It even supports below-the-rail operation, allowing for smith et pocahontas some ground-bounce during switching events. Its bandwidth is high (3 MHz) which, in from, conjunction with the STM32#8217;s 1 Msps ADCs, allows for precisely monitoring current within a single PWM cycle. Brushless motor controller - top copper. Schematic capture and PCB layout were done in EAGLE. Make Vs Buy! The final layout is letters from a skeptic, surprisingly concise.
Layout priority was, naturally, given to the power stage. Input power is distributed to the 3 half-bridges by large unbroken copper fills on the back side of the board. Bridging the two rails is a whole slew of ceramic decoupling capacitors. The MOSFETs are all on the top side, with plenty of vias connecting to the power fills (for both electrical and thermal reasons). Outputs from each of the half-bridges are routed through the current-sense resistors (for 2 of the phases, and a dummy 0-ohm resistor for the 3rd) directly to off-board wires going to the motor (off-board, in-line connectors would be used in the final robot on-board connectors of suitable current handling capacity would have substantially increased the PCB size). Brushless motor controller - bottom copper. The MOSFET driver chips are placed near their respective half-bridges. The high-current gate/source drive paths between the driver chips and the MOSFETs are routed adjacent to path project, each other to improve drive waveforms.
Analog current-sense paths were given similar attention. The differential traces from the letters a skeptic, sense resistors to act 5 scene 1, the amplifier chips were routed (as much as is possible with a 2-layer PCB) to avoid non-common-mode interference (the differential amplifiers would, of a skeptic course, remove most common-mode noise). The SMPS needed to Social Essay, have its current-loops minimized, as well which wasn#8217;t a problem, given how small it was. The rest of the board had relatively simple routing requirements. Aside from the CPU#8217;s crystal oscillator and per-chip decoupling, the remaining chips and traces could go wherever they fit. Letters From A Skeptic! I have some basic firmware written for Essay Case: Charles vs BlueCross Shiled this board that correctly drives a sensored brushless motor, either with locked-antiphase or sign/magnitude style PWM.
Originally, I had intended to use locked-antiphase exclusively, since it allows for a skeptic regenerative braking. Unfortunately, when designing the make vs buy, board, I hadn#8217;t fully appreciated just how low-inductance most brushless R/C car motors are. Letters From A Skeptic! The low inductance results in very quick current changes in the phase windings. Since locked-antiphase depends on the winding inductance to smooth out and reduce circulating/ripple current, this was a major problem; at on Michigan Case: Blued, reasonable PWM frequencies, the from, ripple current was very high while, at high PWM frequencies, the MOSFET switching losses were unacceptable. Switching to Essay Charles vs BlueCross, sign/magnitude resolves most of those issues, but introduces some of its own. Most importantly, the body-diode on the MOSFETs must now come into play during PWM off-cycles. The body diode is letters from a skeptic, a lot higher loss than the MOSFET, so it results in more power dissipation. Synchronous rectification would help with this, but would be tricky to implement in firmware (especially given the rapid current decay rate). Many dedicated motor controller ICs have integrated hardware for path project management implementing synchronous rectification.
Despite these potential inefficiencies, the board still works fine. Now it#8217;s just waiting on letters a skeptic, me to Controlled Service Essay, finish the rest of the robot, so it actually has something to do! This board was designed before I standardized my part libraries, so you won#8217;t find the parts in my EAGLE parts library. Letters From A Skeptic! In any case, the make vs buy, EAGLE schematic and PCB layout can still be downloaded via Mercurial, in letters a skeptic, my eagle_mtrdrv1 repository (or via a direct ZIP download). For those without EAGLE, you can download PDF versions of the schematic and layout.
Nice. Essay On Michigan Toussaint Blued! Thank you very much. I have played quite a bit with STM32 controllers, especially using them with FreeRTOS. I think STM32F103 are really useful devices. What a website. Tons of info !#8230;. I#8217;m designing my very own motor controller with an AVR and Allegro chip. Have you got any source code showing how to from, do odometry ? Would love to john smith, see it if you have something. Thank you very much for a skeptic posting your design! I was wondering if you had a partlist including the large capacitor at the input.
I am trying to do the Government Controlled Service, same thing but will be using NI#8217;s RIO FPGA system as the controller to provide versatility thus I am just trying to replicate the driver portion. I think I have most of the from, components identified but want to make sure. In addition I am a ME with a slight background in smith, circuitry but wasn#8217;t sure of the reasoning for the C38 through C51 capacitors in parrallel vs using just one and how do you use the multiple signals to calculate the current? This is a kinda old post, but since this hasn#8217;t been answered yet: C38-51 were most likely used instead of letters one big cap because he wanted to lay out the parts on act 5 scene 1, a small board. A larger cap would have been taller and not fit as nicely. The current is calculated as follows: R are all 0.01 ohm resistors that all of the current going to each of the windings must travel through. Letters From A Skeptic! IC4 and path management, IC7 are an AD8216 difference amplifier.
Essentially, they subtract the voltage in one line from the voltage in another, then multiply that output by some constant (we#8217;ll call this k) The voltage test inputs on letters, IC4 are connected to each side of act 5 scene 1 R6, and the voltage test inputs of IC7 are connected to a skeptic, each side of critical R19. As current flows through R , a voltage drop is from a skeptic, created due to Ohm#8217;s law (V=IR). Charles Toussaint Blued Shiled! Since we want to know I, this becomes I=V/R. Since the letters from a skeptic, V measured at the analog input of the ARM chip is act 5 scene 1, equal to the V at from a skeptic, the resistor times k (V_arm = V_resistor * k), I = V_arm/(R * k) Assuming I got my math right, of course. I#8217;m looking for a bldc controller for Segway type self balancing. Do I need locked anti phase for self balance? I also need 100 or so amps. Could a novice modify your controller to handel 100 amps? I currently use the osmc by robot power on brushed motors and it drives self balancers great. I#8217;m looking for that same functionality in act 5 scene 1, a bldc controller.
Thanks for sharing! I found this design, while looking for a motor controller which can drive a sensored bldc motor over a wide rpm range (0 10,000 RPM) in. 10 rpm increments. Do you have any plans to produce this in any kind of quantities and offer for sale? Hi Dan!
Just wanted to tell you that your website is a skeptic, really awesome!! I just love reading all your process. The website and about Pathology of Clostridium Difficile, documents are really well organized, which makes this so enjoyable!

mama mia essay Roxane Gay and Mamamia. Here’s the thing: you ascertain very quickly, particularly if you’re as experienced a writer and from a skeptic, interviewee as Roxane Gay, where the questioner’s intentions lie. There’s that sick feeling that comes over you as the questions slide deliberately off-mark. Or you sense a nervous overfamiliarity, retrospectively attributable to inexperience with the make vs buy, topic or a carefully planned curve ball that ensues. Sometimes the interviewer just doesn’t get it : there’s no malicious intent at all. This, too, can be a form of privilege.
I read your book. Letters A Skeptic! I chose not to engage with it. It was too hard. Service! But you’re here now. So educate me. Make me understand. Letters From! Isn’t that why you’re here? Your choice, in all of this, is to either remain patient in the face of Essay on Michigan vs BlueCross Shiled insult, or cut the interview or interviewer off, to letters a skeptic have the angry black woman trope dragged out as prime promotion. In the case of her interview with Mamamia ’s Mia Freedman, Gay knew something was awry. “Ok I can’t keep this in,” she tweeted on May 24. “I just did an critical project interview w/ someone who read Hunger and they said ‘we did a bunch of special things to accommodate you’. Like.
Am I supposed to be grateful you provided a sturdy chair? Why would you tell me this? Is it that arduous? Come on.” Roxane Gay, the a skeptic, Haitian-American author of Bad Feminist , An Untamed State and about of Clostridium, Difficult Women , was in a skeptic town for commitments around the Sydney Writers’ Festival. The date of her tweets sticks in my mind.
It was the same date I was admitted to hospital. I had been due to get on act 5 scene 1, a plane for the festival the next day, after six months off book tours. Even though my book was released in August last year, the publicist at my publishing house had cut all media access back in February at my request, due to the emotional toll some of the interviews were taking. I’d been really looking forward to sharing the Sydney stage with the remarkably diverse line-up of local and international writers the festival had programmed. Writing a memoir about racism and its physical and psychological impact is like writing about from your house burning down while you’re still locked inside.
The writing process, and the publicity trail, would be far easier if we didn’t write about issues such as racism, sexual assault, discrimination or mental health. If we refused to Government Service storytell about being belittled, bullied, broken or dehumanised. If we didn’t let strangers see us at the lowest points in our lives, leave our actions and our trauma open to scrutiny and debate. Letters! We write our lives for many reasons. For me it is Essay Court vs BlueCross Blued, because I hope it might make some small difference, somehow, some way, to a former incarnation of myself. Make her world a little easier, kinder, less lonely. After the letters from, angst and altruism of the writing, comes the tour: a double-edged sword. You wanted to initiate conversation and therefore change. To start the conversation, you need readers.
To get readers, you need the smith, press. You’re grateful for the press – for the many who interview respectfully and genuinely engage with the letters from a skeptic, material. Vs BlueCross Blued! Then there are the rest – the stuff-ups, and the set-ups; the from, terrible question times. In Australia, the make vs buy, more diverse your identity, the more formidable a minefield this can prove to be. There was the time I was assured I would be doing a lifestyle segment about things you do in letters from a skeptic your spare time only to be faced with a live interview about the most intimate aspects of my memoir; the time the other guest turned out to be someone clearly intended to make vs buy bait me; the audience member who told me they were “uncomfortable” with me using the word “racism”. From my sickbed in Melbourne, I followed as the media detailed the clueless interview between the ABC’s Michael Cathcart and a skeptic, Man Booker Prize-winning author Paul Beatty. Et Pocahontas! I followed as Cathcart dropped the “N-word”. Letters From! Followed his query into how Beatty learnt to be black . His response to Beatty’s throwback of the project management, question, that Cathcart felt he has “learnt to be less white”. His portrayal of letters Australia as some kind of post-racial paradise. Critical Project! His, “I think of myself just as a person. A Skeptic! I think I have learnt not to be white.”
I read The Australian infiltrating young Sudanese-Australian writer Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s schools sessions, about an audience member questioning the Writing Race panel, the Controlled Essay, panel I was meant to be doing and felt bad about a skeptic cancelling, about why writers are still writing about the “exhausted topic of race”. These incidents, so common to me now on the book trail, and project, no doubt old news to the many Indigenous and other diverse Australian writers who’ve been running this track aeons before me, seemed to shock many in the industry. Three weeks later, on June 13, Mamamia published its Roxane Gay podcast. Interviewer and Mamamia founder Mia Freedman detailed private communications between Mamamia and Gay’s publisher about the logistics of the author’s visit to promote her new book, Hunger . There were stipulations such as a sturdy chair, and no photography. From! Mamamia chose to preface the interview with reference to Essay Blued Shiled whether Gay would fit into a lift; detailed her weight in from a skeptic medical terminology; explained the sheer inconvenience that encompassed accommodating her. Interview stipulations are not uncommon in the publishing world, particularly among writers of Gay’s calibre. Most often, they are not diva demands, but polite requests based on act 5 scene 1, extensive experience and a history of a skeptic disrespect or discomfort. I avoid make-up rooms, and will only agree to do television if I can arrive made up: this is non-negotiable. I prefer not to have selfies taken with readers, unless they’re school groups, or young readers of colour, but at times I will acquiesce. There are certain shows I won’t appear on. John Et Pocahontas! There are solid reasons for letters each of these stipulations.
Sometimes – of Government Controlled Essay course – denial of these requirements comes at the cost of exposure. Authors carefully consider these costs: we all want a wide readership, and these accommodative requests are not made on from, a whim. Roxane Gay is a New York Times best-selling author. I’ve had the privilege of hosting an Essay on Michigan Court Charles Toussaint Blued Shiled extended in-conversation with her. She is exactly like her work: disarmingly smart, generous, fierce, warm, funny and politically astute. Letters From A Skeptic! None of which Mamamia chose to make vs buy introduce her as. Mamamia saw fit to explain their breach of both privacy and letters, sensitivity by positioning it as a favour to act 5 scene 1 the author.
Since her memoir Hunger talks about her size, and the difficulties of navigating the world in her body, Mamamia was helping Gay’s cause by disclosing the terribly onerous list of things they had to from a skeptic consider in interviewing her. The level of condescension here defies belief. Perhaps Mamamia was helping Roxane Gay the same way Mia Freedman helped racism in 2013, when she explained how a white person dressing up in blackface to portray a person with black skin wasn’t really blackface , and shouldn’t be considered offensive. Roxane Gay has been interviewed by path project management the best in the business. To my knowledge, no other media outlet in the world has chosen to breach Gay’s privacy, and to humiliate her the way Mia Freedman has. Letters! If there were industry whispers before about avoiding press with Freedman, believe me, the roar is now deafening. Gay and Essay Difficile, nonfiction authors like her will continue to letters from open up their own lives, in the hope of changing those of others. May we deal with the press the best way we can. Act 5 Scene 1! May we not remain silent in the face of ignorance, stupidity or distress.
“Not entirely sure I am going to from be able to keep it together during the press for this book,” Gay confessed on Essay about Pathology, June 12, the letters from a skeptic, day before Hunger came out. Then, a day later: “Today was supposed to be about my new book. That is what I wanted. The influence of media on society Essay. The media is a powerful force in contemporary society, which determines our actions and identities. With reference to relevant sociological theory and evidence, discuss media effects. Society relies a great deal on technology for news, entertainment and education. Mass media is seen as one of the greatest influential factors on the opinions and a skeptic viewpoints of Essay Pathology Difficile society in the modern world. Media includes a range of letters a skeptic sources, for example, Magazines; Internet; Television; Books and Radio. All of these sources are what contribute to john smith the beliefs of what society believe life and culture to be, which is from, sometimes heightened to unrealistic standards. Although media provides speedy access to various forms of communication, as with anything else, negative ones closely follow its positive attributes.
Socialisation and about society is one of the main features in partnership with mass media. As seen in letters from a skeptic the contemporary society, norms; values; and way of life have changed to john smith a great extent in comparison to the generations gone past. A crucial aspect that a large media society has embraced is that it brings to the surface great awareness of the world around us. Letters From A Skeptic! The media has exposed individuals of all ages to different aspects of the world that previous generation had no exposure to. Essay Case: Charles Toussaint Vs BlueCross! This vast revelation has educated the youth, thus making them more aware and letters a skeptic resourceful about the world today. Media delivers messages ‘across the globe’ in a matter of minutes, providing us with information about the most current events around the world. Media is actively transmitted on a day-to-day basis via millions of people and their access to resources. An example is in the fashion world: it is Essay Pathology Difficile, media that creates the letters from a skeptic, trends and genres of different types of Court Case: Charles Shiled clothing, also considered as ‘identity’. _The fashion world markets their clothing to society through the from a skeptic, media_ (Crane, 2012) using various sources such as, television, Internet, and print sources like newspaper and Magazines. Today’s society faces constant debate about women’s body image.
Size ‘zero’ has become not only a fad in act 5 scene 1 the world of a skeptic high-end fashion modeling but also a fad in smaller castings of modeling. The size zero topic has caused a revolution with women around the Government Controlled Social, world trying to enter the modeling industry, harming their bodies in countless ways in order to achieve the “ideal” body image. Women today face extensive criticism about their appearances due to the superficial ideology created by the media. Letters From A Skeptic! This has brought plenty of criticism from feminist individuals, groups and organisations around the critical project management, world whom state that women have died from starvation simply for a short-lived career in the modeling world. A way in a skeptic which media has positively impacted upon the notion of the ‘size zero’ topic, is through the use of TV commercials by popular companies like Dove, to empower women, this was done through Doves ‘Be Beautiful’ campaign which showcased women of all shapes and sizes labeling them as all equally beautiful. Today’s world has stereotypes made from different forms of media.
Stereotypes have been created on different ethnicities and critical cultures. As individuals growing to a more open-minded mentality, we see distinct relations between the two. When we see a particular ethnicity portrayed in a certain way, judgments tend to be established and therefore we then relate them to from a skeptic an entire culture of act 5 scene 1 people. Analyses of media in modern and post-modern societies have concluded that media are the society’s storytellers, repeatedly confirming and modifying the society’s image of itself (Anderson, 1991; Condor, 1988, Fairclough, 1995; Hall, 2001). In and through those stories, whether in the factual or fictional genres, we get to meet and ‘know’ our fellow citizens and, consequently, consistently distorted depictions stigmatise those so portrayed (Nairn, 1999; van Dijk, 1993). Eventually many individuals tend to a skeptic conform to those stereotypes, thus following the self-fulfilling prophecy. This can be dangerous as people’s self-esteems can ultimately be affected, not forgetting this activity can be harmful to society. For example, many African American people are portrayed as criminals and, therefore, displayed as “dangerous” people in the media and make vs buy its various forms; many fear them as they are known for a skeptic causing harm and disruption.
As this stereotype changes the view of this particular ethnicity, they tend to act the way they are seen in the media as society already believes that they are that particular stereotype. The hypodermic syringe theory states that the media feeds society what they want and Essay of Clostridium Difficile society accepts it without any questioning; it is a medium of the letters from, message that can cause changes within a time span of a few minutes. The results can be drastic and cause massive changes in society, as adolescents may apply these standards and values in their adult lives. Mass media is a fast growing field; the commercial world has experienced immense amounts of developments in this sector due to rapidly increasing demand. The media can also be subjected to creating illusions and perceptions about particular situations or events to convince a specific audience or group of people (Atwood, L. E. (1994). But when an individual experiences it for smith et pocahontas themselves they will see how different it is compared to how the media portrays it. For example, when someone is letters, exposed to how television broadcasting takes place in reality, they realize that the make vs buy, media may exaggerate the event in order to create emphasis on a particular situation. Furthermore, the media creating the illusions may be one of the most important responsibilities of modern education. As media may not portray the data in the way it was, inequalities about validity are created. Theorists have various, different and conflicting ideas on the effects that mass media has on contemporary society. Functionalist believes that each part of society has a function that they are to perform in order for society to from a skeptic function to its full potential, and Social Essay there are particular functions society has to reach in order to maximum capacity(Giddens, A., Duneier, M., Appelbaum, R. Letters A Skeptic! P. (1996).
Functionalists believe that society conforms to a lot that they see in the media by enforcing laws and regulations, which keep order and control in society. Government Controlled Service Essay! Functionalists believe that Conformity is what reinforces the from a skeptic, norms and make vs buy values of society. Letters From! Therefore, this is what teaches the new generation how to adapt to society. The media enforces and teaches society the rules and regulations, not to mention provides social circumstances of individuals disobeying the laws and regulations. Pathology Difficile! This acts as a reinforcement to conform to society’s rules. For example, cop shows provide an example of social situations where individuals of our society act out and from a skeptic the punishments they receive. On Michigan Court Case: Charles Vs BlueCross Shiled! This enforces rules and conformity within society. A Skeptic! Children of today’s society are being an agent of socialisation and thus expose them to countless amounts of media at a very young age (Arnett, J. J. (1995), they learn their standards and values form these sources thus acting as sources of Essay about Difficile socialization. The most predominate role the media provides according to a functionalist is from a skeptic, entertainment.
Besides all the social control and socialization factors, in the end the media is our predominate form of entertainment. This is a source of relaxation and a momentary escape from the hectic world that we live in. Conflict theory is obvious in this understanding as the media does perpetuate the ideology of the powerful and pacifies people. Researchers such as David Buckingham (Moving images, 1996) and David Gauntlett (Moving experiences, 1995) have evidenced through their research how even young children have a sophisticated level of media literacy and understand more about how the critical path, media works than adults give them accountability for. This further reinforces the belief that conflict theorist Karl Marx has in that there are two dominates classes in society. One being the Bourgeoisie, they we’re the ruling class that controlled all the assets and letters from a skeptic controlled the modes of production, they owned most of the properly and land. The second class was The Proletariats, they we’re considered the lower working class. This class had no power at on Michigan Court Case: Toussaint vs BlueCross, all and worked hard labor jobs which consisted of manual labor. Conflict theorist states that functionalist has not paid attention to the social inequality that the letters from a skeptic, mass media portrays, that the mass media benefits some more than others. According to conflict theorists, the mass media is controlled by a number of highly influential people. As the media is controlled by very few highly qualified people, they can deliver their views to the media and create false assumptions about particular opinions.
Since the about of Clostridium Difficile, ownership of the letters from, media is not in the hands of many, creating profitability to them as producers and several different industries are interested in transmitting messages to the world via the approach these particular media industry individuals. The subject of what influences the mass media involves the link between persuasive media messages and make vs buy the indirect, actual behavior. (Gunther, A. C., Bolt, D., Borzekowski, D. L., Liebhart, J. L., Dillard, J. From! P. (2006). The process of ‘ two-step flow of act 5 scene 1 communication’ must take place. This process involves the letters from, communication between the media and the audience members. The first process involves respected individuals of society to evaluate media messages. These individuals tend to be highly educated or politically powerful in that community.
As their status contains power and authority they usually conduct independent judgment. The second step involves the leader’s impact on make vs buy attitudes and behavior of from a skeptic others around them. This way media’s opinions are filtered by the leaders. This two-step process limits the amount of impact on society. Critical Project! The media influences society to perform a particular action; yet the leader’s power will determine whether society will perform that action or not.
Symbolic interactionism represents media through social studies (Webster, J., Trevino, L. K. (1995). In-depth interviewing and participant observation is used to study how people in a society truly interpret media messages. Social research does not only concentrate on the social meaning producers try to letters from a skeptic send, but the way in Essay about of Clostridium Difficile which the audience filter and understand mass media messages. Sociologist, Stuart Halls states that, audience members take an active part in consuming the products of the mass media. But, they filter and interpret the messages in the context of their own interest.
Every individual has developed their own way of thinking over their lifetime. Which implicates that the media does not fully impact individuals. (Katz, E., Lazarsfeld, P. F. (1970). From! Society takes in Government Controlled Social the mass media’s information, in the context of their own experiences, interests, and values. So, any in-depth analysis of the mass media must take into the production and consumption of the data. In the initial stages, the meaning intended by letters, producers must be studied. Further to Essay Pathology of Clostridium Difficile that, we also need to study how the public consumes or evaluates media products. A Skeptic! Audience members may understand media messages in ways other than those intended by the producer. The critical attitude of the individuals exposed to Essay of Clostridium the media reduces the ability to identify strongly with many characters, personalities, and storylines. Age also affects how we relate to the television or various different forms of media. For instance, the senior viewers tend to be selective and a skeptic focused on their television viewing.
In comparison to individuals who grew up with TV cable and remote control ( Katz, E., Lazarsfeld, P). Individuals in that vein often sift through channels, engage in make vs buy conversation and from a skeptic do a multitude of things that detract attention to the supposed object of focus. The media does not impact these modes of viewing. This is an example of the media’s effect on society and the extent to which it affects certain individuals. Mass media is a tool that can cause great change and impact on society mostly.
Although the mass media has afforded society negative instances, there are several high points that can be taken away from the existence of the media. If it were not for the media society would not be informed about Essay about Pathology of Clostridium Difficile world events and situations which are taking place in it. Many individuals criticise the media for it’s over letters from exaggeration and creation of false delusions. However, many forget to give the media credit for the intense and immediate broadcasting around the world. On the whole, the media has created many advantages for society and has created a whole new generation and way of life, yet, on the other hand, the media has corrupted the minds of children and adolescents. John! Not to mention its role in the massive loss of culture and tradition that dates back thousands of years ago. In the end has the media benefited society or corrupted it? An Analysis of Chaucer#8217;s Knight#8217;s Tale Essay. In what ways and to what extent is Chaucer#8217;s Knight#8217;s Tale appropriate to its teller, #8220;a verray parfit, gentil knycht?Sophie KingChaucer#8217;s Knight#8217;s Tale is a story in which the courtly ideals of the chivalric knight are questioned. The narrator of the letters a skeptic, story, a knight himself, tells us about the noble Theseus and his rule over Athens. Theseus is appropriate to the description #8220;a verray parfit gentil knycht#8221; as much as the make vs buy, narrator himself but we come to question the perfection of both as the story progresses. Letters From? Although based on classical Greek mythology Chaucer writes in medieval terms. There is still great debate today about the values of the medieval knight that so often appears in Chaucer#8217;s work. Reading courtly poetry and stories of medieval romance might trick us into believing the nobility of make vs buy, knights but the reality would have been much less romantic in the cruel and turbulent times of the a skeptic, medieval world Chaucer writes about. The Knight#8217;s tale might be said to uphold the power of chivalry and express the nature of the noble life, but as the story unwinds it becomes easier to see the limitations and realities of chivalric power and raises profound questions on courtly love. Winthrop Wetherbee suggests,The relationship of john, love and war is one sided: honouring his lady confirms the knight#8217;s courtesy but it is most of all an excuse for letters from, the self-centered enterprise of demonstrating prowess. In practise warfare remains the Essay on Michigan Court Toussaint Blued Shiled, true test of chivalry and courtesy is largely the stuff of courtly poetryThus there is a skeptic a clash of priorities and it appears impossible for the perfect knight to be loyal to his neighbour, to his lady, to God, to project, war and to everything else the code of chivalry entails.
The nature of warfare in itself is a crime against letters, courtesy. An example of critical path project management, this is within the fight between Arcite and Palamon in the forest. They courteously help each other to arm and then a fight to the death ensues. It raises the question whether it is even possible to be a perfect and noble knight when the two main aspects of the tale are love and war. Being a knight becomes a contradiction in itself. Although Chaucer uses #8220;a verray parfit gentil knycht#8221; in the general prologue to describe the narrator, it seems to refer directly and undoubtedly to the character of Theseus too. He is the embodiment of success in love and war, as told within the first section of the poem in his defeat of the Amazons and the wife he brings home. Critics have said Theseus is the spokesman of mood and morals throughout the letters, story. He is equal in nobility of project, character and depth of feeling.
He embodies chivalric heroism in its highest form. Courtly grace and political responsibility combined with success in warfare and love make him a character that the Knight aspires to be. He never doubts the values and decisions of Theseus making it easy as a reader to see the from, Duke as a #8220;verray parfit gentil knycht. But we must of course always be cautious of the narrator. Theseus is symbolic of the ideal knight which is exactly what the teller intended him to be when telling the story within the Canterbury tales. I call him symbolic as we never really learn much of his personality. He does not display enough distinct characteristics for critical, us to get a sense of who he really is. We only know of his courageousness and wisdom throughout. It becomes clear when analysing Arcite and Palamon that its is extremely difficult to distinguish between the two.
Furthermore Emelye only speaks once within the tale and even this is in prayer. This suggests the meaning of the Knight#8217;s Tale is letters from not displayed through characterization. A. C. Spearing says it is, #8220;more like a perception of the nature of the john et pocahontas, human condition as a whole.#8221;Returning to Theseus, we witness his first example of gallantry behaviour. After winning at war he discovers the letters a skeptic, weeping widows and their husbands, #8220;dead bodyes vileynye#8221; since Creon refuses to john et pocahontas, allow proper burials. Since vileynye is the opposite letters a skeptic of gentilnesse Theseues#8217;s gentile qualities are emphasised when he vows to make vs buy, affront this offence against courtliness. A Skeptic? He displays a sense of compassion as they appeal to Government Social Essay, his pitee;Som drope of pitee thurgh thy gentillesse,Upon us wrecched women lat thou falle. This is the first of many examples of Theseus#8217;s chivalric behaviour but he is not the from a skeptic, only knight in the tale to make vs buy, display chivalric qualities. There are moments of noble behaviour between Arcite and Palamon, for example in the forest scene when both are seized by a violent jealousy and are on the point of fighting to the death. Chivalry remains at the forefront of their minds as they both gallantly and courteously help each other to arm before the battle ensues. From? It seems ironic and management, rather absurd to a modern audience that following this chivalric behaviour they switch so easily from brothers to warriors.
The battle #8220;reduces them to wild beasts.#8221; When reading the following lines it is difficult to see the courteousness and selflessness that a knight is supposed to portray; In his fightyng were a wood leon,And as a crueel tigre was Arcite; As wilde bores gonne they to smyte,That frothen whit as foom for ire wood. Up to a skeptic, the ancle foghte they in hir blood. Yet we must see the conflict in chivalric terms. Rather than a means of affirming the gallantry of these two knights I would argue it works to emphasise Theseus#8217;s chivalric qualities. Essay Court Charles Vs BlueCross Shiled? On finding them in this state he acknowledges loves#8217; violent effects and takes pitee on the two knights. He responds almost sarcastically about the way of the chivalric world,Thus hath hir lord, the god of love, ypayedHir wages and hir fees for hir servyse!Theseus then organises the tournament that is to decide who should live to from a skeptic, marry Emelye. This is make vs buy a typically medieval reaction as a fight to the death amongst nobles was perfectly legal if conducted under the letters, control of a nobleman. Theseus is the noble knight in this case and defines the rules of the great tournament that is to decide the fate of the two lovers. Here there is a vital change of narrative thought, as the Knight appears to grow less sure of the nature of chivalry. The tournament creates death and destruction despite valiant attempts to prevent bloodshed with the ban of act 5 scene 1, certain weapons of war. There is a noticeable amount of animal imagery within this section of the poem that invites us to believe it was a violent and a skeptic, savage contest.
Theseus does not quite achieve what he perhaps hoped to. The death of Arcite envokes questions about the nature of fighting tournaments to win the act 5 scene 1, lady. Critics have suggested A Knight#8217;s Tale demonstrated Chaucer#8217;s distaste of this chivalric practise, viewing it as an outmoded procedure. The Knight begins to doubt the chivalric values of Theseus and knighthood in itself when describing the from, three temples. He goes into john, a long meticulous description and in doing so seems to lose control of the narration. He emphasises negatives such as the painting in the temple of Mars in which he depicts a violence that pervades all life.
By describing the terrifying power of the Gods, the Knight reveals an from a skeptic awareness of the dangers of the world and lack of power mere mortals have. After promoting the noble nature of Theseus#8217;s authority as a knight he comes to realise that even a #8220;verray parfit gentil knycht#8221; cannot make much difference in such a cruel world. This is reiterated in Theseus#8217;s speech at Arcite#8217;s funeral when he describes life as a foule prisoun. Despite claiming to not wanting to describe the funeral he goes on to descibe it in great details as though the details of the event are being forced back into his mind. The description of the critical, perfect knight is from a skeptic appropriate to teller and protagonist and proves to make a vital point within the story. Critics have said it perhaps answers the question of what the true knight is worth a little too easily and so we perceive the ideals of the knight in make vs buy, a negative way. I would conclude by saying that the description of a #8220;verray parfit gentil knycht#8221;could easily be said to be appropriate to letters from, both Theseus and the narrator and what they aspire to be, but the truth is on Michigan Court Charles vs BlueCross Blued Shiled that perhaps this idealism is unreachable and the tale in fact makes us question the #8220;perfection#8221; of the medieval knight. His final speech in which he realises that by dying young and nobly Arcite has escaped the #8220;foule prisoun#8221; of life, Thesues proves the lack of power he has to create order despite his authority and nobility. Wetherebee says, #8220;The conqueror whose chivalry had once seemed all sufficient has been humbled.#8221; And so the disorderliness of life is asserted and despite all aspects of chivalric intentions, as humans we are merely puppets to a greater power. The Knight has tried to from, promote his fellow noblemen within his tale and,#8221;he never abandons chivalric decorum, but we sense that he has again come close to acknowledging the fundamental limitations of the code by which he lives. John Smith Et Pocahontas? #8221; We learn from this that chivalry is by no means faultless and despite trying to promote his perfect knight, the teller has actually come to realise the letters from, imperfections that chivalry entails. Government Service? Although the Knight#8217;s Tale was meant to assert the ordering power of chivalry it becomes clear that it is no real means of controlling life.
It#8217;s rituals and courtly codes of from, conduct are made insignificant in view of death caused by war and the overruling power of the Gods. The tale makes us doubt the entire idea of act 5 scene 1, chivalry and makes us question whether it is even possible to call any of the knights involved in this essay, narrator or characters #8220;verray parfit#8221; or #8220;gentil.#8221; The Chaucer#8217;s Knights Tale is therefore appropriate to its teller not because both are perfect in their knightliness but because as the tale unravels and the truth about chivalry comes to the forefront, so too does the a skeptic, teller#8217;s narrative prowess. At the start both the teller and the knights in his tale were visions of perfection. The teller proved his prowess in his eloquent language as the make vs buy, knights in his story behaved gallantly and respectably. As the story concludes we may doubt both teller and tale and their chivalric notions just as we respected them at the start. They are intricately tied to one another and therefore always appropriate to letters from, one another.
