Book Division Report for 2017 National Executive Board Meeting. Essay On The Devastating Effects Of Arson. Following are some highlights of actions taken by the Book Division since the on Lessons Learned on Becoming a Better Person 2015 Delegate Assembly. Effects Of Arson. These include work on issues specific to writers of books, including to e-books. These also include policy advocacy related to legislation, regulations, and litigation that affect writers of work in other formats as well as authors of books, but where the Book Division has taken a leading role in NWU work. Book Division co-chairs and other member volunteers also engaged in ongoing activities, including moderating the NWU-Book listserv; alerting Book Division members and other NWU members about issues affecting their interests through NWU-Book and the national NWUsletter,; and monitoring Congress, the betadine definition Copyright Office, foreign governments, and international entities for developments affecting book authors#8217; interests. The co-chairs made presentations to NWU chapters on book issues: Davis gave a workshop on “Protecting Your Copyright” on April 22 for the New York Chapter and Hasbrouck gave one on “Making a Living as a Writer in on The Devastating Effects, the Digital Age” for Essay on Lessons Learned on Becoming the Northern California Chapter on May 19.

There have been three subsequent presentations of the webinar, which members found to be very informative and useful. Presentations were given by Davis, Mende and Rose, who wrote the webinar in conjunction with committee phone calls over Essay on The, 2014-15. July 28, 2016: Representatives from NWU, the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) and the Science Fiction Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) met with a six-person delegation from the U.S. On Lessons On Becoming Person. Copyright Office in their offices at their invitation.
Our delegation consisted of Salley Shannon, past president of ASJA; Michael Capobianco, past president of SFWA; and Davis (in person) and Hasbrouck (on the phone). We discussed proposed changes to Section 108 of the U.S. Copyright Act, which creates “exceptions” to copyright for libraries and archives. A Copyright Office study group, created in of Arson, 2005, came up with suggested changes that would expand these exceptions in ways that would significantly undercut writers’ incomes. However, there were no working writers in on Khaled The Kite Runner, the study group, and Essay Effects of Arson these proposals are being considered without prior study by and awareness or consideration of their impact on writers#8217; revenues, especially in light of emerging digital and self-publication business models.
We held two conference calls to prepare for the meeting and betadine each of us agreed to on The Devastating Effects take a topic: How writers and other rights-holding creators are using their old work in new digital ways in order to monetize it; Publishers don’t know how we’re making money on our personal backlists because they’re focusing on their front lists of new best sellers; Precise definitions are needed of who can do research and use archival resources, especially if searches will be run by outside (for-profit) contractors; and march of the Creators needing to “opt out” of having their online work freely redistributed by online “archives” will not work. It would undercut sales by the author if time-limited materials have been posted on websites that no longer exist and those materials continue to be available online. The system must be set up on an “opt-in” basis so the creator can give permission before each work is posted online. The Copyright Office staff asked a lot of questions and took copious notes. Even though they had met with other creators’ groups, their reaction to our presentation seemed as though they had not previously heard what we had to of Arson say. Penguins Movie. We stressed that we were talking about Essay on The Devastating Effects, freelance writers, and Essay on Becoming Person that’s why our members had to be creative in finding new ways to earn money from Devastating of Arson, their work. As the of the Empire Essay meeting ended, we thanked them for being open to what we had to say, and they thanked us for giving them a new perspective to think about. However, we have no idea whether they will take our message to on The Devastating heart and try to incorporate freelance writers’ efforts to earn a decent living into religion their suggested changes to the copyright law. More legislative proposals from the Copyright Office are expected next year.
August 18, 2016: Submission to the Copyright Office from the NWU: Mandatory Deposit of Electronic Books and Sound Recordings Available Only Online. Conclusion: Archivists#8217; desire to #8220;acquire#8221; the Internet – whether through #8220;crawling#8221; and #8220;capture#8221; or through mandatory deposit of all its contents – is understandable but misguided. Trying to Essay Devastating of Arson archive the contents of the World Wide Web is as futile as trying to march of the penguins archive the weather. At most, one can archive snapshots of observations made by specific observers at specific places and times. But the Internet is both diverse and constantly changing. Different text, images, etc., can be served to Devastating Effects a visitor to hemingway adams stories a particular URL depending on when they make their request, where they are located (as inferred from Essay on The Effects of Arson, their IP address), the parameters sent by their browser (such as their preferred language, device type, and screen resolution), who they are, and their preferences (as determined from betadine definition, cookies, user logins, etc.). Essay On The Effects. Do two people ever see exactly the same Facebook home page? Unlikely.
The Web and other electronic content distribution channels have enabled new media and new distribution modes that are, characteristically, personalized and dynamic, making them ill-suited to adams archiving and making demands for their #8220;deposit#8221; especially burdensome. That also enabled new business models and revenue streams associated with those new media, the potential for which could be significantly undermined by free access to deposited copies. Trying to constrain Internet media to those formats that are static and subject to archiving would straightjacket both technology and business models, harming both writers and Essay Devastating readers. Archivists need to find ways to accommodate their methods and expectations to new media, not try to confine new media within old-media archival formats. The National Writers Union remains eager to work with librarians, especially the Library of Congress, to develop best practices for archiving that will nurture rather than undermine writers#8217; livelihoods. October 17, 2016: Submission to the Copyright Office from the NWU: Removal of Personally Identifiable Information from Registration Records. Phoenician. Conclusion: Writers’ privacy matters.
New technologies have created new opportunities for writers to distribute, exploit, and generate revenue from their works anonymously or without divulging their personal information, and without the on The Devastating of Arson need for Essay Hosseini's a publisher or agent as an anonymizing or privacy-preserving proxy. Those privacy gains should not be undermined by Copyright Office regulations or laws, or by copyright registration procedures. January 30, 2017: Comments and Petition from NWU for Rulemaking: Group Registration. Abridged Conclusion: The Copyright Office doesn#8217;t need to re-invent the World Wide Web, the DNS, or the HTTP and TCP/IP protocols, and shouldn#8217;t try. Neither registration nor deposit of copies with the Copyright Office is likely to improve, in any material respect, the ease of requesting and obtaining copies of written works available online. The National Writers Union and look forward to participating in a rulemaking to Essay of Arson make it feasible, for the first time in more than twenty years of Internet content distribution, Web publishing, blogging, and social media, to obtain meaningful protection against religion copyright infringement for Essay on The Effects of Arson works in march of the, these formats that are now well-established but still prohibitively expensive and time-consuming to Essay on The Effects of Arson register and thus effectively denied copyright protection. January 31, 2017: Proposal from NWU on on Khaled Runner Copyright Office Reform; Register of Essay Effects, Copyright. Abridged Conclusion: The key question in assessing copyright law and regulations, the structure of the Copyright Office, and betadine definition the selection of the Register of on The Devastating of Arson, Copyright should be whether those policy and personnel decisions serve the interests of the public and of creators. Writers, readers, and the relationship between us should be at the center of phoenician religion, that inquiry. On The Devastating Effects Of Arson. With that in mind, the key criteria for selecting the Empire Essay Register of Copyright should be her ability and Effects commitment to serve the interests of the reading public and march of the the creative community, and her independence from other influences outside the Constitutional purposes of copyright. Similarly, whether the Copyright Office remains within the Library of Congress (with recognition of its obligations as, in part, a regulatory, rulemaking, and on The administrative agency), or whether it is made an independent agency, its structure and procedures need to ensure that its policies and practices are based on understanding of, and engagement with, readers and creators and the organizations that represent them. … February 2017: Preliminary survey of members via NWU-Book listserv about two large-scale digital infringements, which could lead to a group grievance with the Grievance and Contract Division.
March 2017: Book Division co-chairs worked with President Larry Goldbetter on responses to a query form the Library of Congress regarding ongoing #8220;Web archiving#8221; and Hosseini's redistribution of NWU and other Web content by the Library without a license or permission. We requested the Library not archive any NWU and other Web content posted on nwu.org, and the Library agreed. On The Effects. March 30, 2017: Comments from the march movie NWU on Study on the Moral Rights and Essay on The Effects of Arson Attributions and Integrity. Conclusions and Recommendations: The moral rights of authors are, as the march term itself suggests, a matter of morality and fairness. Having recognized the on The Devastating Effects of Arson ethical imperative of respect for the human rights of writers, and having committed itself by treaty to enact laws recognizing these rights and providing adequate and effective remedies for violations of these rights – without formalities, independently of writers#8217; economic rights, and even after any transfer or assignment of economic rights or when a work is used as #8220;fair use#8221; #8212; the U.S. should fulfill its commitment to writers and to the other parties to these treaties by enacting explicit Federal statutes to recognize and protect these rights. May 15, 2017: Further Comments from NWU on Moral Rights. Abridged Conclusion: We reiterate our appeal to the Copyright Office and Congress to recognize the public interest and treaty-law imperative for new laws and definition regulations to protect the moral rights of authors and to provide adequate and effective means for us to enforce our rights as writers. Appeal for Collaboration and Successors: Davis has been Book Division co-chair since 2005 and Hasbrouck since 2009.
While we have periodically requested members join us in advocacy work — and some have volunteered — we have not yet had any members express interest in taking over leadership and Essay on The Devastating Effects of Arson coordination of this work, including representing the NWU in Washington and in national advocacy coalitions. Essay A Better. We once again make an appeal for collaboration and for members to help take responsibility for leading the Book Division.

Modern South Asia: History, Culture, Political Economy. Sugata Bose, Ayesha Jalal. London, Routledge, 1998 ; 313pp. Date accessed: 3 October, 2017. In the last twenty years or so there have been great transformations in the historiography of modern South Asia. Essay Of Arson? It would not be too crude an exaggeration to say that no western historian of much intellectual ambition engaged with the subject from James Mill in Essay on Lessons Learned on Becoming Person, the early nineteenth century until after the Essay of Arson second world war, while Indian historians were little known outside the subcontinent.
All that has changed. Highly innovative work that commands the march attention of all historians, not merely of regional specialists, is now done on modern South Asia. This work comes out of Indian and Devastating of Arson western universities, where scholars from Essay on Khaled South Asia, like Sugata Bose and Ayesha Jalal, play a very prominent role. Works of synthesis on modern South Asia have not kept up with the flow of monographs, the Effects installments of Subaltern Studies or the articles that appear in profusion in The Indian Journal of Economic and Social History or in Modern Asian Studies . The late Percy Spear and Stanley Wolpert, the two authors who have commanded the of the Empire Essay field in Essay of Arson, Britain for so long in introducing general readers or undergraduates to South Asian history, now look distinctly dated. Essay On Khaled? A new and on The Effects authoritative synthesis like this one is therefore very welcome. Modern South Asia introduces the reader not merely to new interpretations of topics such as the rise of British power, nationalism and partition, but to new perspectives on the subject as a whole.
The traditional historiography of British India tended to be very much history from above. British Governor Generals were placed in the centre of the stage and judged as good, bad or indifferent by whatever criteria were currently deemed appropriate. In later and more liberal treatments, such as those of The Fall Essay, Spear and Essay Effects of Arson Wolpert, prominent Indians who engaged with the Raj, Rammohan Roy, the early nationalists and the great protagonists in the end of empire - Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah, were also given full treatment. Popular accounts published in this country remain obsessed with personalities, above all with Mountbatten, Wavell and the leadership of Congress and the League. 'Ordinary' Indians were reduced to abstract Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs or in books with any pretensions to scholarship to Learned Person statistics in the perennial debates as to whether India got richer or poorer under the British. Bose and Jalal try to write history from below. They are of course interested in Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah and of Arson have important things to say about them, which lay readers may well find surprising and challenging. The British, however, are not personalised. Wavell does not appear in march of the penguins, the index and the only reference to Warren Hastings tells the reader that he was impeached. There is no room for cultural brokers like William Carey.
Instead, the British presence in India is depicted as a colonial state, taking forms that varied with its underlying economic rationale. In the early nineteenth century that rationale shifted from oceanic trade to the extraction of land revenue; in the later nineteenth century priorities changed to Essay Devastating the generation of an export surplus and the stimulation of rural purchasing power for British imports. Something is of course lost in such a synoptic view. The Raj may well seem to be a much more unified, calculating and rational institution than was actually the case, and the diversity of the British presence is inevitably telescoped. Nevertheless Bose and Jalal could well reply that there are enough books of The Men who Ruled India genre for those who wish to recapture that diversity and they have other purposes to fulfil. They wish attention to movie be paid not to the British, except as a source of on The of Arson, some of the pressures that shaped Indian society, or to the Indian elite, but to what they term 'intermediate social groups', such as merchants and traders and those who filled minor offices, and movie the 'subaltern groups', peasants, the urban poor and the 'tribals', at the bottom of on The of Arson, society. They are concerned with women as well as with men. They recognise the crucial importance of hemingway nick adams stories, labels such as Hindu or Muslim in on The of Arson, the twentieth century, but insist that these are not immutable distinctions that have endured for centuries; they have a relatively recent history. 'The undue and ahistorical privileging of religion in the periodization of Indian history' must be discarded. 'There are no grounds for branding the ancient, medieval and The Fall of the Roman Empire Essay modern periods of the subcontinent's long and complex history as Hindu, Muslim and British' (p.
13). Bose and Devastating Effects Jalal urge historians to concern themselves with smaller entities, those that they call 'communitarian' rather than with the 'communal' labels attached to supposedly monolithic religions. As with all the Empire other concepts that the authors use, the uninitiated probably require much more explanation of community' than is Devastating, offered to religion them, but the Essay of Arson issue is summarised on p. 108: 'What needs emphasizing is that there were multiple and on Lessons Learned on Becoming a Better Person competing narratives informed by religious and linguistic cultural identities seeking to contribute to the emerging discourse on the Indian nation.' These voices were eventually drowned by the assertion of religion in Essay Effects, the making of on Lessons Learned on Becoming, Pakistan and by the counter-assertion, at least for a time, of secular nationalism's right to inherit the centralised state created by the British and to call it 'India'. It has been the ultimate fate of the communities, except in Bangladesh, to be subordinated to one or other of these leviathans. There is a strong ideological commitment behind this interpretation of South Asia's history, as there is behind any historical interpretation of any interest. Its assumptions are very different from those embodied in recent western attempts at synthesis, such as those of Spear or Wolpert. Both of them seem to Essay on The Devastating have believed in an essential Indianness and to have understood its history as a series of interchanges between that essence and betadine outside influences, most obviously Muslim and British ones. Devastating Of Arson? This for Spear was 'the inner meaning of modern Indian history, culminating in Gandhi and the national movement, independence and the reign of Nehru'.
In brief sections at the end of their books he and Wolpert assessed the on Lessons Learned a Better state of contemporary India, noting the Essay Devastating extent of Essay The Kite Runner, western influence and Devastating Effects of Arson the survival of Essay on Lessons on Becoming Person, 'traditions'. For Wolpert, 'The more India changes, the more Indian it remains'. Significantly, neither of them wrote anything about post-1947 Pakistan, let alone Bangladesh. For them, partition was a disaster and the criterion for judging the success of independence was the survival of India as a unitary, secular state. Neither intellectual trends nor recent events have been kind to such interpretations.
Concepts of an Essay on The of Arson, essential, timeless India have been subjected to withering analysis. They are emphatically rejected as western constructions, designed to emphasise India's difference and therefore its inferiority. Indian nationalism as it emerged at the end of the nineteenth century is not generally seen as any kind of hemingway nick adams, fulfilment of Essay Effects, India's history, but rather as a colonial legacy. A narrow elite were able to use western concepts of Essay The Kite, nation and Essay Devastating Effects state as the means to obtain power over the rest of the phoenician population and to perpetuate the subordination of the 'subalterns'. Bose and Jalal are more sympathetic to nationalist aspirations than it is currently fashionable to be, arguing that discriminating nationalists were capable of recognising the claims of linguistic and Essay on The Devastating Effects of Arson regional diversity to be embodied in the new Indian nation. Nevertheless, the heroes of the nationalist pantheon are left badly scarred. Congress under Gandhi 'more often than not represented the The Kite class interests of the middle to richer peasantry and industrial capitalists in the urban sector'. Essay On The Devastating Of Arson? For the Empire poor, the Mahatma offered only the palliative remedy of Essay on The Devastating of Arson, trusteeship (p. 144).
Nehru is portrayed as the exponent of betadine, a unitary nationalism that took over Essay on The Effects of Arson and operated the colonial centralised state. His claims to on Lessons on Becoming have founded a democratic new India are called into question. Of the great leaders, only Jinnah, so often reviled in conventional historiography, emerges largely unscathed. It is Effects, argued that a separate Pakistan based on definition religion was not at all what he intended. He had a vision of a pluralistic India in which a Muslim 'nation' would co-exist with other nations and be able to exercise 'an equitable share of power' in the centre (p. On The Devastating Of Arson? 193). What many recent historians have seen as a flawed nationalism inevitably, in their eyes, produced flawed states after independence. Bose and Jalal do not endorse the respect, if often tempered with anxiety for the future, accorded in most western accounts to Indian 'democracy', let alone to the workings of the states of The Fall Empire, Pakistan or Bangladesh. They dislike the centralisation of power which, they believe, Nehru perpetuated from the Essay on The past. Expectations that a strong state might be an effective agent for driving through 'modernity are now often looked at with as much scepticism as is Essay, accorded to on The Effects of Arson the concept of religion, 'modernity' itself, taken to be another western construct. On the role of the Indian state as a promoter of economic or social development, Bose and Jalal are a little ambiguous.
They recognise that the economic liberalisation of the early 1990s removed 'the more stifling bureaucratic controls on industry', but insist that 'state and Essay on The Devastating of Arson public action' have an important role in remedying deficiencies in health and education (p. 229). The political failures of India seem glaring to them. The narrow basis of the Nehru regime could not be sustained. As subsequent leaders, notably Indira Gandhi, endeavoured to become more populist they were forced to invoke Hindu 'majoritarianism' as a counter to regional challenges. The legacies of military rule in Pakistan have been 'a parallel arms and drugs economy, administrative paralysis, and violent social conflict' (p. 230).
In the last chapter of the nick stories book, reflections on on The Effects of Arson fifty years of independence, Bose and Jalal offer their alternative scenario for the evolution of modern South Asia. Instead of a transfer of 'colonial structures of state and ideologies of sovereignty' to 'mainstream nationalist elites' (pp. 23940), they would have preferred the survival of pre-colonial ideals and practices, whether under the Mughals or their eighteenth-century successors, of The Fall Roman Empire, 'flexible, nuanced, and overarching suzerainties', which observed both individual and communitarian rights' and had no 'notion of absolute sovereignty' or 'singular allegiance' (p. 240). There must be a return to 'a political and state system based on Effects layered and shared sovereignties' (p. 243). Assuming that the definition pre-colonial order had some of the characteristics attributed to it by Bose and Jalal, how did the shift come about some hundred and fifty years later to Effects of Arson two and subsequently to three sovereign successor states, one overtly based on religion and the others to a considerable degree dominated by parties organised according to religious allegiance? The attempt to answer this question is the book's major theme.
Bose and Jalal attribute much to the nature of colonial rule. They rightly point out that the British had a strong concept of a sovereign state from the eighteenth century onwards and that nationalists were more inclined to try to capture this powerful state for themselves than to dismantle it. Bose and Jalal are, however, also critical of hemingway adams stories, what might seem to be opposite on The Devastating Effects trends in colonial rule, a willingness to devolve authority to regions within a nominally federal structure and to assure separate rights to what the British identified as minorities. The situation created by the 1935 Government of phoenician, India Act with its carefully rigged provisions that no Indian group should be able to exercise absolute power at of Arson the centre and with its provinces based on historical evolution rather than on religion does not look all that different from Bose's and Jalal's ideal, except of course for the survival of a sovereign imperial presence. The British are also held responsible, in part at least, for the consolidation of more or less unified Hindu or Muslim religious entities. British views that India was so divided go back to the early days of their rule and the British had something to do with the process of defining the orthodoxies to which Hindus and Muslims increasingly adhered. In the south, the East India Company 'sponsored a somewhat spurious neo-Brahmanical ruling ideology' based on Roman a rigid definition of caste, while British scholars 'gave far greater importance to doctrinal Islam or the sharia as propagated by the ulema' than to the 'eclectic religion shot through with local customary practices which was followed by the vast majority of Indian Muslims' (p.
74). The late nineteenth-century censuses embodied British notions of Essay Devastating, clear-cut religious divisions and electoral constituencies were eventually demarcated on religious lines. Yet Bose and Jalal stop well short of divide and adams stories rule as a full explanation for the hardening of the Hindu/Muslim divide, let alone for partition in 1947. Essay Devastating Effects? They see the emergence of a variety of Muslim identities, 'linked to the fact of British colonial rule without being wholly shaped by it' (p.167). The creation of phoenician religion, a Pakistan consisting of no more than parts of the Muslim majority provinces of the old British India was the outcome of a whole series of contingent events, carefully analysed in this book.
The partition of the areas where Muslims lived between Pakistan and India, far from being the fulfilment of the idea an Islamic nation, was 'its most decisive political abortion' (p. 188). This review has tried to indicate something of the richness of Essay of Arson, this book and of the intellectual excitement that it generates. Will it succeed in displacing other introductory accounts to provide 'the multi-dimensional, high definition overview of modern South Asian history' (p. 5) which the authors, with justification, find lacking elsewhere? There can be not the Essay Person slightest doubt that it addresses the issues which currently dominate a highly creative body of historical writing, that this writing has been comprehensively mastered and of Arson that persuasive interpretations of it are offered. The book is a manifesto as well as an definition, historical account, but readers will have no difficulty in identifying the authors' ideological agenda and in making up their own minds about it. Total success seems, however, to require a little more than these admirable attributes. It requires a high quality of exposition if an audience without prior knowledge is to be caught and held. That quality is lacking. Whatever their level of intellectual aspiration, Spear's books were, as the authors generously acknowledge, 'elegantly written'.
What he meant was always abundantly clear and he carried his readers along with him with ease The same cannot be said for this book, except where the authors resort to some splendidly apposite poetic quotations. The introductory chapter embodies what the Essay Devastating of Arson uninitiated will surely find to be a major defect in the book. The later pages of that chapter become hopelessly over-allusive. The authors clearly wish to establish their position in definition, relation to their peers, but that is surely not the purpose of a book such as this. Instead, they are likely to baffle, and one fears to of Arson irritate and put off, the serious inquirer who might like to Essay on Khaled Hosseini's The Kite know what 'subalternity' is or what is the difference between 'dissonance or polyvalence' and might well welcome 'a much-needed decentred balance in our current, disoriented scholarly predicament' (p. 11) if she knew what any of that meant or if the Essay on The Devastating Effects authors would condescend to tell her. The issues raised in the introduction are serious ones but it is self-indulgent to write in that way in a book like this. The other main problem that the lay reader is likely to face is the denseness of the exposition in many places. The authors set out to cover a great deal in a relatively short space and this inevitably means cutting corners rather than offering full explanations. For instance, in a section on the emergence of on Lessons a Better Person, successor states to the Mughal empire the reader is told about 'a transition from prebendal to patrimonial land holdings' (pp. 52-3), but the following sentences do not seem to on The explain or to illustrate what that might mean.
In short, one feels that what this book desperately needed was an Essay on Lessons on Becoming Person, aggressive copy editor prepared to say over and over again: 'Stop, I do not know what that means; please explain it to Essay me.' Modern South Asia would have benefited greatly from that salutary discipline. As it is, it is certainly a work that professionals and the initiated will greatly admire but it is one whose wider impact may be more limited than it deserves to be. We are most grateful to Professor Peter Marshall for writing a detailed and movie rigorous review based on on The a careful reading of Hosseini's The Kite Runner, our book Modern South Asia. Since he sees a strong ideological commitment' behind any historical interpretation of any interest', we will not quibble over the ideology he ascribes to us. At the Effects of Arson invitation of the editors of the journal, we would like to respond briefly and respectfully to two points of substance and one of The Fall of the Empire Essay, style. First, Professor Marshall correctly notes our interest in writing history from below' and our focus on Indian intermediate and subaltern social groups. He also accepts that we have important things to say about key Indian individuals, but regrets that the British are not personalised'. We believe that we do say as much as is necessary in a general history of South Asia about British figures, such as, Clive, Wellesley, Bentinck, Dalhousie, Curzon, Linlithgow, Mountbatten and others. We advance a clear argument in our book about the need to place colonialism as an Essay Devastating of Arson, agency of historical change in its appropriate social context' and to Hosseini's Runner study it in Essay on The Devastating, its interplay with the culture and phoenician politics of anti-colonial resistance (p.5). For more on British empire-builders we have referred our readers not to self-congratulatory books of The Men who Ruled India genre but to scholarly works such as those by Professor Marshall on the establishment and consolidation of British rule in on The Devastating Effects of Arson, the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
Second, Professor Marshall suggests that the 1935 Government of India Act does not look all that different' from our ideal' of a political and state system based on layered and nick adams shared sovereignties'. In fact, the principles and motives underlying the 1935 Act could not be more far removed from what Professor Marshall describes as our ideal'. In Chapter 10 of our book titled High Noon of Colonialism, 1858-1914' we have shown how the Effects of Arson colonial state juxtaposed to The Fall of the Roman its own conception of monolithic, unitary sovereignty at the centre a shallow, if not fake, version of sovereignty reposed in the persons of traditional' rulers' (p.103). In Chapter 12 on Colonialism under Siege' and also in Chapter 14 on The Depression Decade' we dwell at some length on the ways in which the 1935 Act sought to deploy the weight of princely India to retain all the vital attributes of sovereignty in British hands at the centre. Despite much song and dance about on The, provincial autonomy,' we argue, the centre was equipped with all the authority necessary to curb power in the provinces'(p.130). The legacy of the 1935 Act has been detrimental to the prospects of a healthier centre-region balance in post-colonial India and Pakistan. Phoenician? The only British-sponsored constitutional scheme that came anywhere close to approximating the notion of layered and shared sovereignties' was the ill-fated Cabinet Mission plan of Devastating, 1946 that proposed a three-tiered constitutional structure for betadine, a federal India based on grouping of provinces.
Third, we respond to Professor Marshall's comment about exposition' only to Essay on The Devastating of Arson absolve our copy editors of any culpability. Style is in any case a matter of personal predilection and we are gratified to note that other reviewers have found our book to be elegantly written' (e.g. Indian Review of Books, May-June 1998; The Book Review, XXII, 8, August 1998; The Telegraph, 15 May 1998). Since most general histories of definition, South Asia take no account of Essay Devastating, key historiographical developments of the last two decades, we felt it necessary to tell our readers what these were and where we stood in on Becoming a Better, relation to the major debates. The last few pages of our introductory chapter attempt precisely to Essay on The Devastating Effects do that and can be easily skipped, if necessary, by the non-specialist reader without losing the thread of the narrative.
However, it is our belief that the generic female reader Professor Marshall alludes to will find our exposition less self-indulgent' than he has. She had no need of our condescension since she had our respect. Our aim was to challenge her, not to make her feel comfortable. Professor Marshall's words of praise will serve as encouragement and his critical remarks a goad to rethinking as we prepare a revised and expanded second edition of the book for the new millennium. Journal, Diary, What’s the Difference? It’s a question I get asked all the Effects of Arson time. “What’s the The Fall of the difference between a journal and on The Devastating, a diary? A diary is Roman Empire Essay a report of Essay on The of Arson what happened during the Essay Hosseini's Runner day—where you ate, who you met, the details leading up to the kerfluffle in the office, and who took whose side. It’s a bit like a newspaper about you. A journal is completely different. Essay On The Of Arson! A journal is about examining your life. It’s a GPS system for your spirit. “I’ve made this mistake before. Nick! . . and I always make it when I rushed for time and feel panicky. But I feel panicky because I know I’m headed for the same mistake.” Journals lead to insight, growth, and sometimes, achieving a goal. You don’t have to set a goal to have a journal, I have a tendency to Essay of Arson live in my head and march of the, like goals. You can just muse. You can put down the shifts in emotion, the goals you’ve achieved and on The Devastating of Arson, how, to remember them.
The shortest pencil beats the longest memory, says the proverb, and writing down your motives, successes, emotional pratfalls, helps you remember how you got there and why, not just that they happened. You can keep a journal in anything that feels comfortable and The Fall of the Roman Empire Essay, that’s portable–a spiral notebook, a rollabind book you’ve put together with lokta paper, index cards held together with a rubber band. You can use a computer, keep a blog, although that doesn’t work as well for me. I believe things on Essay on The Devastating, the internet are simply not private, password protected or not. And I like the feeling of flipping through pages. To keep a journal on paper, pick a time of day to write.
Keep it regularly. It makes it easier. I never stuck to The Fall an exercise program because I never nailed it into my schedule at a certain time. Writing works the same way. On The! First thing in the morning, last thing at night, while eating lunch at your desk. Write with a good pen that feels good and whose color you like. In the beginning, you may have to set a time limit. Three minutes is good. Just write whatever comes into your head. No editing, no crossing out, no reading it in your mind in front of the march of the penguins committee who lives in your head and judges your writing. Journal prompts are ideas or thoughts to get you started writing.
They help you focus on Essay, a topic. You can use one over and over for a week, to march penguins see your different answers, or you can use a different one every day. That’s it. It’s not complicated and it doesn’t take a lot of time. And yes, I teach journal writing courses. On The Devastating! That’s how I learned about the GPS of the spirit idea. Essay On Lessons Learned On Becoming! From my own journal. My website contains a schedule of classes and Essay on The Devastating of Arson, events on the tab at the top of the page.
Meanwhile, some prompts to get you started : I couldn’t start my day right unless. . . . If I could change one thing about my job, I would. . Of The Empire Essay! . Before I get too old, I’d like to . . . –Quinn McDonald is Essay Effects of Arson a certified creativity coach. Hemingway Nick Adams Stories! (c) 2007. Devastating Effects Of Arson! All rights reserved. 94 thoughts on “ Journal, Diary, What’s the Difference? ” I love how connections grow and spread! Loved this post! I’m currently looking at phoenician religion journals to buy. I use to write when I was younger, but quit about at the of on The Devastating 14. I’m 19 now. I miss recording my life. Do you think it would be too girl for a guy to get one that has a functional lock?
I’ve never seen a diary that had a “functional lock” that I couldn’t pick with a toothpick or a hairpin. If you want to lock your diary, put it in a lockbox or a drawer with a real lock. If you just want the lock for the looks, then it doesn’t matter what other people think. Your site link has no relation to Journaling, so I”m removing the link. Thank you for the reply. I like the lock for movie the looks. Of course if anyone seriously wanted to Essay Devastating Effects get into a journal like that they could simple cut their way in or pick the lock (as previously stated). Your posts appear very insightful and thought provoking; I look forward to Roman Empire Essay reading more. Happy New Year! Thank you for your entry #128578; You are always welcome!
Thanx, your article helped me clarifying the concept of Essay on The Effects journaling clearly. Keep your journal for YOU–that’s the most important thing. I think you’re definitions of journal and diary are spurious to say the least. Of The Penguins! Even newspapers (simile for diary) contains spiritual or subjective elements and Essay on The Devastating Effects of Arson, journals reflect places, appointments and the like. Personally I keep a log of both events, meetings, etc along with thoughts and I use either term. I do, however, employ tags to identify facts as distinct to thoughts which is the of the Essay closest I come to Essay on The Devastating separation. As an example …. I was sitting in the dentists waiting room (an appointment in The Fall what might be called my diary) and was lost in on The Effects of Arson my thoughts. As a result I speculated on the life of the dentist and started to create a story about a dentist and the life he might have.
I noted those thoughts in what might be called my journal and tagged them as a book idea. Of course I recorded both in the same app. Everyone is The Fall Empire welcome to his or her own idea, use, enjoyment of Essay on The Effects whatever they create to record their thoughts. Definition! I’m not the journal police. I posted that opinion on my blog seven years ago. I’ve since come to use a Commonplace Journal, discovered Vade Mecum and other delights.
Using “spurious” is a bit harsh, and possibly not the Essay on The Effects of Arson best use of the word. But have a wonderful day anyway. Well said Quinn. I have only just come across your post through finding your book “Raw Art Journaling” and googling your name. The Fall Empire! I thought it would be cool to look down to see what others thought. Thank goodness not all are like this pompous person! I am grateful that you wrote about the Essay Devastating of Arson differences between diary and journaling as I too have been a bit confused. March Of The Penguins Movie! I have a 5 year journal that I try to write in every day. Essay Effects Of Arson! At the top of each page for the day, there is a question to of the be answered – at the end of the 5 years, you have answered the question for Essay on The Devastating that day 5 times (if that makes sense). I am not totally perfect at it having not being able to (or felt like) answering the of the question each day, but it is interesting to Essay Devastating Effects of Arson read back on my thoughts for the previous year.
I may now try and betadine definition, use your example for journal writing and see where it takes me. My kids (6 7) will probably get a kick out of writing one too as we already try and incorporate story writing in their journals! Have a great day #128578; “Spurious”? Maybe you need to do one of those thought logs you mention. Stay with it until you get it. Yep, spurious.
Looks OK, till you examine it. Then, bogus. We all have spurious thoughts, and creative people more than most. It’s not having spurious thoughts, it’s using discernment with them that makes creatives excellent problem solvers. An interesting post. Essay Effects! My diary is definitely a diary, but it has long journal-type parts. March Of The Penguins Movie! I started in August 1969 when I was 18 and I have not missed a day, which probably indicates that I’m OCD at least as far as the diary is concerned. Now that I am retired, I have been typing up the handwritten entries and have begun publishing them. The whole thing is probably about Essay on The Devastating of Arson, 5 million words, and it may be something only a crazy person would do. I suspect there are many not-too-creative journal/diary people and many creative people who would rather eat wood than write in a journal/diary. How wonderful that you kept a diary for that many years–and that you still have them.
I believe everyone is creative–but we each manifest it in different ways. Can i mashup writing diary and journal in one book ? Like diary and journal come along in one reading.. I hope u understand.. Of course you can combine them–if you like the result. Phoenician! If you get an imbalance–let’s say too much to-do list and not enough self-exploration, you can always separate pages. Hi, your post is interesting to me also. I journalled for years and then got paranoid about Essay Devastating of Arson, privacy so I got them scanned and betadine, binned the on The Devastating Effects of Arson actual books which I now regret. Phoenician Religion! I keep a visual diary which I started last year which is more like a scrapbook with photos and Essay on The Effects of Arson, writing but I have now decided to start keeping a journal aswell. I have bought a book and started writing in it today, it feels so good to write about my feelings again. I do see this as being separate from my visual diary and don’t want to merge the Hosseini's The Kite two,the visual one is more a record of events, the journal is more a record of my feelings and getting things off my chest with a reference to events if they are relevant in what I am writing about. Do you think they are better kept separately?
What really matters here is Essay Devastating of Arson what you think. Betadine Definition! And it sounds like you want to Essay of Arson keep separate journals and diary. And if that is The Fall true, that is what you should do. I keep a journal and then “distill” it to Devastating of Arson art pages. I enjoy doing that. March Of The Penguins! No rules except what you get good results with. Your article about the difference between a journal and diary is helpful to me. I got confused between the two for Essay Effects a very long time.
This frightened me from writing down my thoughts for many years. I don’t know who I can ask or if I ask, will I get any reply to my problems. I worry constantly when it comes to betadine definition writing because I am afraid of Devastating Effects of Arson making mistakes in my grammar and vocabulary. I am not sure if I write a diary, I need to be serious since there is less room for phoenician religion mistakes (grammar, vocabulary, etc.) while a journal, I could make some mistakes here and there. On The Effects Of Arson! Is it true? It’s your book, Alex, and your writing. If you aren’t showing it to anyone for grades, you can write whatever you want in your journal.
Just write. You can always go back and correct, edit, and improve grammar, but getting your thoughts down is the important part. Hi Quinn, I just wanted to say that I found your article very interesting and informative. I suffer with a panic disorder and it was suggested that I keep a journal but I had no idea what to do… Now I let my pen go and the emotions flow into my journal and it really helps when I meet with my psychotherapist. Thanks #128578; My happiest moment is knowing that someone read this blog and it helped them. Wonderfu! I’m so glad I’ve found a research on internet that explain this difference! But I’ve gotten some questions while reading this post. I’m from Brazil, and here in my country, most people I know don’t have this idea of journal or diary well-separated from of the Roman Essay each other, at on The Effects of Arson least I’ve never found someone who has it.
But, what I’ve noticed from my researchs in blogs, sites, etc., is that here people who know the march penguins movie journal make it be a diary, writing down things that happened during the day. Effects Of Arson! And who write in Essay on Becoming a Better a diary writes about internal feelings, personal thoughts, etc. But that’s something I think could be explaned, since the Essay Effects of Arson word “journal” seems very like our portuguese word for “newspaper”: “jornal”. So, using this “logic” that a journal could be a newspaper about what you did during the day, people you talked to, goals you acomplished, etc., wouldn’t it be possible that journal is not about internal things, and it’s more likely a newspaper about you? And a diary is where you write how you feel, things you want to put out, etc. I got confused… If you could help me, I would be very thankful for that! Thanks since then! The word “journal” is betadine definition used to mean newspaper here, too.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution is the name of a newspaper. But the difference between “journal” and “diary” is Devastating Effects largely up to the person using it. I have a diary that shows what I do each day–notes on phone calls, appointments–things I do in my business dealings. Betadine! My journal is more personal thoughts and art expression. I keep two journals at the moment. Essay Effects! One I forget to The Fall of the Roman Empire write in (my dream journal) and one that I like to write in 3-4 times a month. I can’t really write in a journal daily. Essay Devastating! I usually have to be in a certain mood to write, kinda like the feeling of having an epiphany.
That’s when my thoughts really start flowing and on Khaled Hosseini's Runner, I know what I want to put down and get across. I find that writing really gives me insight to who I am. When I look back I sometimes find little warnings to myself of things to Devastating of Arson come if I keep doing a certain thing or keep going down a certain road. Of The Penguins Movie! Sure enough a few months later I should have heeded my own warning, though it was not clear in that moment. In addition it also helps show the Essay on The Effects progress I have made as a person and keeps me on track. Your use of journals makes me nod my head and chuckle. I don’t write in a journal every day, either. I keep different journals for different purposed, and learn from all of them. Adams! Eventually.
You do, too, and on The Devastating of Arson, it counts! I use a journal to record my progress when working on a painting; color mixes, new things that I discovered, things and things I don’t like. Speaking of things I don’t like, I don’t like the snooping video. of Jennifer that you have on your site. Everyone is entitled to some. privacy especially when they are in their home. Sounds like your journal is just the definition right thing for Essay on The Effects of Arson you and definition, that you are using it well. I have no idea what you mean about a “snooping video” on my site. The only videos I post on my site are tutorials. I do know that because I use WordPress and on The Effects, it’s free, Google or WordPress places ads on individual blog posts when they are opened.
I don’t see them, and I have no control over Essay on Lessons a Better Person, them. You can express your opinion to WordPress, though. I really, really, really love your blog! I wanted to Essay of Arson start writing a journal, but what really stumped me was that I was soooo lazy to religion write. I write one or two pages, and that’s it. End of my diary. Then I open it after 1 week or something. The next thing is that I love writing stories and poems, and I often want to write it down somewhere, but my siblings somehow get hold of it. Devastating Effects! I wanted to get a place to on Khaled The Kite hide it, but I didn’t know where. Anyways, your blog made me want to start writing again, and now I’m writing my journal on a daily basis.
Thanks a lot! #128578; Personally, I have a diary and a journal. In my diary I write about what’s going on in my life. In my journal I write down lyrics, quotes, anything that really speaks to me, or makes me feel a strong emotion. I’ve never really written down goals or anything like that. I complain and rant in my diary, and I use my journal for Essay on The thoughts and whatnot.(: That sounds like a plan that works well for you! I have just covered myself a lovely book for creating my first journal. I am checking out definition, some hints and tips here so it does not develop into a diary.
I am not a scrapbooker but like the idea of a journal. Journalers are often not visual, but would like to be (that why I wrote Raw Art Journaling). On The Of Arson! Scrapbooking is totally different from journaling. Try it all and on Becoming a Better Person, settle in where you are comfortable. The most important thing is to feed the creative impulse! Yes, I understand. Essay Devastating! I am an avid papercrafter and cake maker. I am just starting to sell some of the things I make and trying to get a balance with my family and doing this as well. I hope a journal will help me get straight in my head my goals and aspirations on The Fall Roman Essay, all sorts of Essay Effects of Arson levels. I do just like pretty things so decorating the journal was important for me, too.
Take a look at my Facebook page. x. Thanks for march of the penguins movie this blog…. Keep it up.. I have mentioned my hobby as “Writing Diary” in one of Essay Effects my interview forms where they heavily ask hobby related questions. So I request you to help me all sort of questions that can be asked in Essay Learned on Becoming my interview and what all should I do to refine my hobby. Waiting for your reply. What kind of interview asks about hobbies? Tell me more, and I’ll try to Effects form an answer.
My first opinion is “never change your work to satisfy an interviewer, change your work to satisfy yourself.” Thank you for on Lessons on Becoming a Better Person such a wonderful explanation. The question has been there at the back of my mind for Devastating of Arson a very long time now. I’ve recently been experiencing a lot of emotional fluctuations given my hectic schedule. I’ve always had the inclination to write and I recently started writing what I thought was a diary. After reading your post, I now know that what I’m actually writing is a journal #128512; thank you. Good for you. Keep writing. WRiting every day makes you better at writing every day. Hiya, I have recently began to write a journal, however I am still not sure whether I am doing it correctly. For example, I do not write a diary, because I do not mention what I have done that day, however, I do not follow exactly what you say is correct when it comes to Essay on Lessons Learned on Becoming Person writing a journal.
For example, today’s entry in my journal was ‘Music’ and I will write around three pages on that subject and how much it means to me and transpires into my life. I will write about my own opions, and I shall write about all the positives and negatives that this enforces. I wonder if this also contributes to journal writing? When I wrote that blog post, I never meant for Effects it to become an instruction book for right or wrong. If you are writing to explore your journey, your interests, your motives, your emotions, then you are keeping a fascinating journal that will teach you much. Of The Essay! I’m not sure why you chose Music as a word, but it sounds like you are exploring what makes meaning in your life, and that’s important. Thankyou very much and I look forward to contuining my journal. Please stop by and let us know how you are doing as the year goes on. On The Devastating! You’ll discover so much of The Kite yourself in your journal.
I purchased some Oberon blank books with the wonderful leather holder. Essay On The Devastating Effects Of Arson! I had them for years and phoenician, never wrote a thing in any of them. They just sat on the shelf while I pondered this question of Essay Devastating of Arson diary vs journal vs what I really wanted the books to become from myself. The conclusion I came to about defining diary and journal is The Fall Roman Empire Essay that the definitions themselves are irrelevant. The word “diary” conjured cold fact stating, sibling blackmail, and other negatives. The word “journal” presented definitions from my past experiences like tracking details, exercising efforts, and very purposefully planned “point A to on The Devastating Effects of Arson point B” ideas. Neither of those definitions worked for the books I purchased. That’s not what they were intended for. That’s not what they’d be. Those definitions were too narrow and too widely used.
They could be misconstrued as something that was not included in my books and the terms are viewed by myself with a sense of indignation. So, I researched a word to phoenician religion share the idea I had for these books. It wasn’t until I self-defined the books that I could go forward with my planned frivolity, fun, conceptualizing, note jotting, comic strip drawing, painting, doodling, venting, magic, and on The Devastating, everything else that I planned to allow into these wonderful Oberon books. Religion! I have reminiscences. I like the Essay Effects of Arson definition of that word from the dictionary: 1. The act or process of recalling past experiences, events, etc. 2. A mental impression retained and march of the penguins, revived. 3. A recollection narrated or told. 4. Something that recalls or suggests something else. All of those definitions fit what I wanted these books to allow me to Essay Effects create.
My books do quite a bit of meandering about my soul, examining it from all different perspectives; each entry as different as the day they were writ. It’s easy for The Fall Empire Essay me to flip through my pages and recall subtle details of the event(s) I captured. Devastating Effects! Some of those events are attached to march of the movie private experiences and Essay Devastating Effects of Arson, the main concept I put on paper is simply a trigger for Roman me to recall the hidden things of the day. Essay Devastating Effects! Each page is a personal window for that day, containing clues to the things that were important to penguins movie me on that day. Events that happened that are simply to painful for on The of Arson me to look at Runner right now are simply a white page with a word or two inscribed at on The Effects the bottom. Eventually, I’ll go look at those things. Of The Empire! Until then, the page is simply white until I can let my emotions color it in. Journal and Diary are excellent words to on The Devastating describe their crisp functions. The Fall Of The Empire! Each of them have their place and on The Devastating Effects, some of their concepts even find their way into my Reminiscences. Some days are simply crisp and full of details to fill an accounting of.
Most days, however, are full of a desire to recall past experiences revive what once was. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Your site has made me notice the differences. I also feel I should have journal – but Im kinda stuck on how to write one. I have stuff to right, but when it comes to the paper I can’t actually present it. Writing a journal is incredible personal. Some people do “free writing”–writing down whatever comes to betadine their mind on the topic. Devastating! Some people write pros and cons–a list of religion ideas that they like/don’t like to solve a problem.
Other people create art that helps them think about the problem. Devastating! You didn’t ask for help, so I won’t offer any, but a journal is hemingway nick stories a place to explore and Devastating of Arson, experiment. I have never really understood the difference between the two before reading this post. Phoenician! I have over Essay, the last 20-30 years tried to keep a diary and had some success at times sticking to of the penguins the process. I was always fascinated with famous people from history that kept journals and or diaries and the accounts contained in them. On The Devastating Effects Of Arson! I admit that I am a bit old fashioned but it saddens me that technology has all but done away with this art of expressing our thoughts in writing. Journals and diaries leave a personal account of the religion inner person most people never get to Essay on The Devastating Effects of Arson see. When a person passes on from life, it is my belief that this record is of the utmost value to the loved ones left behind! Your post has inspired me to begin a journal and I owe it to you! I agree that hand-written journals are a precious gift to Essay on Lessons Learned a Better yourself as well as to those who come behind you. It’s simply not the Essay on The Effects of Arson same on a computer.
I’m glad you have found journaling! A diary is a day to day experiences and feeling of your daily life, while a Journal is all that plus an definition outlet to reach your goals, and free your creative juices. With a journal everything goes from writing a short story sypnosis, to Essay Effects of Arson steps by steps ways to reach your goals, essays, letters, sketches, snippets and much more. Thanks for leaving your opinion. Wished you would have left your name, too. Thanks for the post. It’s useful, really.Anyway, can I include pictures and sketches in a journal? You can do whatever feeds our creative soul t make your journal yours. Collage, paint, sketch, photograph, write music, choreograph. So a journal is like a memoir.
Thanks for this. I just googled what’s the diff. March Of The Movie! between journal and diary because of the intro in Diary of on The Effects of Arson a Wimpy Kid. Despite the title, he seems to hate the on Lessons Learned idea of Effects of Arson writing in a “diary”. I feel that I should be writing a journal over a diary, because they seem more meaningful. I’ve recently started writing again by hand which is much different than writing in a computer journal/diary actually.
I type faster than I write and I end up with a lot of drivel. My question is though that to an extent can a journal overlap with a diary? I write about what I did that day but I include how I felt. Is that still a diary? What’s really important is Learned on Becoming a Better Person that you are writing about what happened and your reaction. That’s meaning making–and the most important thing you can do. Journals and diaries overlap all the on The Effects of Arson time. There are people who sketch, who write music, who paint in their journals and diaries. Many people keep more than one way to track information. No matter how you do it or what you call it, the important thing is hemingway adams that it makes meaning for you, not what you call it.
There’s good motivation in Devastating Effects of Arson this post, but the difference described between a ‘diary’ and a ‘journal’ is just not correct. Nick Adams! There is no definition that would separate one from the other. Essay Devastating Effects! All through the ages men and betadine, women described as ‘diarists’ are exactly what we would call ‘journalers’ today. Some still call themselves diarists while keeping notebooks of deep, rerflective material. Virgina Woolf, Anais Nin, Samuel Pepys, and others all used the term “diary” to Essay Devastating Effects of Arson describe their writings.
You can hardly call Nin and hemingway nick, Woolf’s works, especially, as simply “reports of what happened during the day.” They were deep, reflective, and on The of Arson, intimate. I bring this up at all because your blog post has risen to the top of Google rankings for this question – and the answer is simply wrong. Based on history, literature, even technical definitions. Nick Stories! It’s only because of on The different uses of the terms at different times in history (even simply different parts of the world) that “journal” is now used more often for deeper reflections, etc. But to say this is a right/wrong, “yes there is a difference,” kind of question – as this post does – is The Fall of the Roman Essay wrong. Thomas Mallon, who most consider one of the top experts in Effects of Arson collections of diaries/journals, has said that they can be used interchangably and it’s nothing but an unnecessary barrier to suggest that one is different from the of the movie other. The point being, and Devastating Effects, why I think you should update, and correct, your post, is that what should be stressed is writing in the notebook — whatever one chooses to call it. And to address this question with a “yes, there is a difference,” is, in fact, a hinderance for some to begin writing at all. Thanks for the explanation, Mike.
I write my opinion in this blog, I have never claimed that my blog posts are academic literary criticism or anything more than they seem to be–an online journal of the slips, trips and aha moments of the creative journey I call my life.
