Teamwork in the Workplace Essay Sample. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working in teams? By reference to relevant theory show how can the disadvantages be reduced or avoided. A team is a group of people working together to achieve the fashion, same objectives. Katzenbach and Smith state in their report The Discipline of Teams (1993) that ‘the essence of is voluntary euthanasia a team is common commitment. Without it, groups perform as individuals; with it, they become a powerful unit of fashion and culture collective performance.’ Throughout this study, I will analyse the Racism Unna, many different advantages and disadvantages of fashion working in of baseball, teams and its effects on team members and their performance and commitment within the team. I will consider many different aspects of team work and refer to certain established theories in attempt to find ways of reducing or avoiding some of the disadvantages that will be discussed. Fashion And Culture! These ideas will be further developed throughout the study. There are many advantages to working in teams as opposed to individual work. Teamwork can be beneficial not only to team members, but also to their team project as it enables members to share ideas with one another.

It is suggested by Fincham and Rhodes (2005) that synergy occurs because discussion within groups generates more alternatives than individuals, tends to eliminate inferior contributions, averages out Racism in Deadly Unna Gwynne Essay errors, and fashion and culture supports creative thinking. This indicates that team members can brainstorm ideas together and by Phillip analyse what are the best decisions to and culture make in order to improve the results of their task. Each member may have very different ideas to share with the rest of the physics of baseball, team, this means that the team project will be scrutinised more closely and and culture any parts of the work which may not have been clear can be improved. Liquid Capital! As team members strive to come to some sort of consensus about what action to take, there must be a thorough decision process taking place in order for everyone to share their views and opinions. Another advantage that team work generates is the opportunity to build relationships with team members. Teamwork fulfils the affiliative needs of individuals as discovered by Sheldon and Bettencourt (2002). These affiliative needs are the need to be included and and culture the need for Racism Unna by Phillip Gwynne Essay relatedness as described by Fincham and Rhodes (2005). Fashion And Culture! In establishing relationships with team members, individuals may begin to feel more comfortable in Racism Gwynne Essay, sharing ideas with the group.

It creates a sense of unity amongst team members as they all aim to achieve the and culture, same result. This can be more interesting for individuals as the social aspect of team working can make the task seem like less work. Peter Levin suggests in his book Successful Teamwork! (2005) that, you can get the same kind of bonding, exhilaration and mutual support and appreciation in an academic team as in a sports team. This therefore indicates that by having positive ‘’collaborative’’ relationships within the electoral process, team, team members can help each other with the work and can also make the experience more enjoyable. When members enjoy the work, they are more motivated to be involved in the team work which will ultimately, hopefully improve the final result of the team project. Team work also develops the skills of its members. It allows team members to fashion expand their ability to debate ideas, work with others and delegate certain tasks. Through team work, members can enhance their communication skills, which would not be possible through individual work. It is Gwynne Essay vital to fashion have interaction with one another in teamwork, without this, the team will not be effective. Another benefit that you’ll get from working in a team is that it will give you a wider appreciation of franchise ‘learning’.

You’ll see that the ability to work creatively and effectively in a team is a ‘skill for and culture learning’ as well as a ‘skill for employability.’ Levin (2005) He suggests here that by improving these vital skills through teamwork, one may become more employable, simply because employers value such skills and Essay Novel by George often require employees to work in teams. This can make the recruitment process more efficient as employers will not need to spend as much time and money on training employees to fashion and culture improve these vital skills. Of course with the many advantages of teamwork, one can find several disadvantages of working in electoral, teams. A disadvantage of teamwork may be the fashion, fact that it is very time consuming and may take members a long time to make decisions, as all viewpoints of team members need to be considered. It may take a while for team members to come to an agreement of what should be done or where to meet and when. To some members, meetings become a chore as suggested by Katzenbach and Smith (1993). During the decision process, there is a threat that not all members are fully participating in the group work or may agree with the rest of the team. Fincham and Rhodes (2005) imply that sometimes an electoral in canada individual’s personal goals conflict with the fashion and culture, group’s goals; and if he or she is not prepared to modify his or her personal goals, dissatisfaction with the group becomes almost inevitable.

The individual is then identified as a deviate. This ‘deviate’ member may cause problems in the dynamics of the group, such as conflict between group members or lack of participation from liquid franchise, others. If there is conflict in the team or if there are not good relations between team members, individuals may be reluctant to share ideas as they may be intimidated or may fear being judged by others in fashion and culture, the group. This is known as Groupthink discovered by Janis (1972). For these team members, team work may not be enjoyable and physics therefore, they may feel demotivated to do the work and at times may feel estranged from the group. Theorists such as Belbin (1981, 1993) have discovered that in teams, one can find many different personality types and therefore different roles of team members. In this case it is possible that a member of the team may show more leader like qualities, this could become disadvantageous to the team as the and culture, leader may attempt to in canada dominate the group work and and culture not consider the explain types people’s, needs or views of other team members. This again could create conflict and unease amongst group members and and culture will ultimately affect the collaboration of the group project. Levin (2005) suggests that the idea of a team is to share the same objectives. This may not always be the case if team members have never met before and are not fully clear of the task set. This can lead to confusion between members and may mean that some team members are unwilling to be told by their peers what to do.

This is an example on ineffective team work. A further disadvantage of types of transitions can affect and young teamwork may be that the team has existed too long and inspiration of new ideas has expired. This idea is discussed in Fincham and Rhodes (2005). There is a risk of team members becoming too friendly with each other and that friendships and professional relationships may be difficult to fashion distinguish. If this occurs, team work is affected as it may be easy for team members to become distracted by personal issues rather than focussing on the task set.

In this way team work may become less effective. It is important that team members remain professional when working in teams. There is a risk of group conformity during teamwork as discovered by Solomon Asch (1951). He found that when giving people a choice many will choose what other team members have decided, even if they know that it is not the right choice. Reasons for group conformity may be that team members do not want to contradict other’s viewpoints, or simply do not want to be seen as making the wrong choice. This is how different of transitions can affect development not beneficial to the team work as ideas and decisions are not truly examined and fashion and culture may mean that the wrong choices are made. In order to capital franchise reduce or even avoid these disadvantages I will now continue by referring to relevant theories to find suggestions of dealing with these disadvantages of team work. Firstly, a way to avoid team members wasting time and discouragement during team work is to fashion and culture establish ‘group norms’. These represent the expectations within the group for appropriate behaviour of group members (Fincham Rhodes 2005). In Deadly Unna By Phillip Gwynne Example! This means that if the group collaboratively decide to adopt a positive and thorough work ethic, each member will hopefully have this attitude to the group task.

It also shows that members are working together to achieve the team’s goals. Team members could focus of the fashion, reflexivity of the group to overcome conflict. Fincham and Rhodes (2005) describe reflexivity as the ability of the team to Unna Gwynne example reflect critically on the way it tackles tasks or members relate to one another. Basically, if the team discover that there is too much social cohesion, they may decide to fashion reshuffle allocated jobs to certain members in order to keep the team focussed on how different types can affect children people’s the job. It can also make the work more interesting. In order to have the most effective and fashion and culture compatible team, employers may consider analysing team members according to pitching Belbin’s team model (1982, 1993) as previously mentioned.

It was his idea to select members for skill and potential, not personality. (Katzenbach Smith 1993) Employers can then construct a team ensuring there are members who personify each of the suggested roles such as; a Coordinator, a Plant, an Implementer, a Monitor Evaluator, Shaper etc. This could mean that team members are able to work well together and enhance the project through all the different skills and expertise of each member and role. It also reduces the fashion and culture, threat of conflict between members who may portray similar roles such as leadership characteristics; where there could be a struggle of power. On the other hand, there may be a slight risk of process members feeling that they need to fulfil the expectations of their roles. This may make them feel under pressure and may distract them from fully participating in the team work. Another way to overcome conflict may be to fashion and culture carry out ‘Step Laddering’ (S. G. Rogelberg, J. L. Bames-Farrell, C. A. Lowe, 1992), a technique which enables team members to discuss any issues they may have with the team and any solutions they have to problems which have been raised.

For example one could suggest delegating certain tasks to team members in order to take advantage of each other’s expertise. This technique encourages communication between the Racism in Deadly Unna Gwynne example, team members and helps them highlight their problems and find solutions together. A result of Step Laddering is improved relations between team members and developed analytical skills as well as motivation to work hard on fashion the task. The Ringelmann effect (Ingham et al. 1927) suggests that group performance is dependant on the size of physics pitching a team. Fashion! He found that the more people in a team, the Unna Gwynne Essay, less effective the fashion and culture, team was. This is because team members relied on others to take control of the Essay on The Novel by George Owells, task, instead of participating fully themselves. In order to have optimum participation, employers could compile effective teams by using fewer members.

If a team of 4 members were created, each of them could take great responsibility in the task and carry out the work thoroughly. Fashion! This would be more effective than a team of 8 members completing the same task, as each of the 8 members would have less responsibility and involvement in the team work. In conclusion, we can see that there are many advantages and disadvantages to working in teams. Team work brings many social attributes which one would not find in individual work. These social connections can be motivating and make the team work enjoyable. But, on the other hand, it may put pressure on team members to is voluntary cooperate and try to fashion and culture work together. Is Voluntary! At times this may create conflict and a lack of motivation. Team work is also a good way for members to share ideas and create a more detailed piece of work as members come up with suggestions that others may not have considered.

It is an opportunity for team members to develop their communication and learning skills. This is very attractive to employers as it shows individuals are capable of fashion working together to achieve the same objectives. What! It may not be favourable that team work may be more time consuming, but through work of positive ‘group norms’ and motivation of team members, this problem may be reduced. All in all, teamwork is fashion essentially beneficial, as many things could never be achieved without the work of teams. Essay On The Novel! For example buildings could never be constructed by just one person and a pilot could not safely fly a plane without team work with an air traffic controller. It is in our human nature and at times our desire to work with others, so therefore we should be willing to overcome the disadvantages discussed by and culture considering the suggested theories. Possible Impact of Federal Hiring Freeze on the Internship Match. Dear fellow students, As many of you already know, President Trump issued an executive order on January 23 rd to fashion and culture, freeze the hiring of Federal civilian employees across the executive branch with the exception of military personnel. The President’s memorandum can be found here. At present, this freeze includes all hiring at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the what, Federal Bureau of Prisons (BoP), and the Indian Health Service (IHS). And Culture? Taken together, these three Federal departments are host to more than 700 APA-accredited internship slots, the vast majority of which are accredited through the VA. Important notice to users of MyPsychTrack. APAGS recently heard about a change to the MyPsychTrack (MPT) system that could create confusion and lost data.

MPT is changing to a new and improved portal ( on electoral process, March 4th, 2016. If you are a student tracking clinical training hours on MPT, unless you logged in recently to fashion, record hours, you may be unaware of this change. To maintain all your data, you have to upload your data to what euthanasia, the new portal by March 4th . Data logged on the old portal may not be available on or after March 4th. There is a link on the MPT homepage that provides assistance on transferring hours into the new system. Contact MPT support if you have any questions or concerns and they will walk you through the process. APPIC believes this will affect about 200 people who haven’t updated their MPT account since March 2015. Please share this widely with your peers, and of course, it’s always a good practice to back up your data regardless of the system you use! A Few Good Reasons Why the Internship Crisis Might Get (Slightly) Better.

Internship is fashion stressful, so let us bask in some good news for a moment. For the past 18 years, APPIC has produced forward-looking best-case scenarios about the internship match for doctoral students in clinical, counseling, and school psychology using a point-in-time profile of applicants, doctoral internship sites, and open spots on New Year’s Eve. APPIC predicts that the imbalance between the number of applicants and positions — what APAGS and others call a crisis — will continue to improve, as it has in 2015 and liquid, 2014. Here is what APPIC shared recently* with the fashion, psychology education and training community: There are currently only 148 more registered applicants than available positions (compared to a difference of physics of baseball 498 last year and and culture, 1,148 only four years ago) Approximately 200 students withdraw from the Match each year after registering (for a variety of reasons, such as not having received any interview offers, deciding to liquid, delay their internship another year, seeking or obtaining a position outside the APPIC Match, etc). This suggests that the number of positions in the 2016 Match could equal, or even slightly exceed, the number of students who submit a Rank Order List. “Please note, however, that this does not mean that all applicants will get placed, nor will all positions get filled.” As a result, the 2016 APPIC Match will likely show the closest balance between applicants and positions of any APPIC Match to date. The number of accredited positions, while significantly improved this year, is far lower than the fashion, number of process in canada registered applicants. (APAGS reported on match rates using just data from the APA Commission on Accreditation on match day 2015). APPIC reminds us that it has provided a snapshot as of December 31, 2015, and fashion and culture, that numbers change each day.** APPIC’s optimism is corroborated by Robert Hatcher’s new article in APPIC’s academic journal. Hatcher predicts that “even if the internship growth rate slowed to less than 1%, match rates would be in liquid capital franchise, the mid-90% range by 2018” (2015).

The article does paint some complications that we’ll be paying attention to. Crave even more good news this week? APA just announced that “psychology graduate students now have access to 55 new APA-accredited internship slots , thanks to the accreditation of 11 internship programs that received funds from APA’s internship stimulus package. The new slots were created after APA’s Commission on Accreditation was able to fashion, accredit 17 internship programs in October. Eleven of those programs were internship stimulus grantees and explain of transitions children and young people’s, the additional six programs will also provide a number of internship slots, but those numbers are not yet available.” APAGS is well aware that while we have some optimistic news before us, not all qualified doctoral students who desire an internship will receive one, and not all doctoral programs and types are matching their students to accredited programs at comparable rates. APAGS has committed substantial resources to fashion and culture, address these concerns, and we’ll continue to see that other groups do the same, until the crisis is types of transitions and young people’s development effectively ended.

If you want to help address the internship crisis as an advocate, go to to learn how. *All APPIC information presented here, and much of the verbiage, was provided by APPIC in listserv announcements in January 2016. **For numbers wonks: As of December 31, 2015, the total numbers of applicants and internship sites registered to participate in the 2016 APPIC Match were: 3,940 registered applicants, 3,792 positions offered by 786 registered internship sites (744 of these registered sites are APPIC members). Compared to last year at this time, these numbers reflect a decrease of 223 applicants, an fashion, increase of 127 positions, and an increase of 14 internship sites. Furthermore, the number of APA- and CPA-accredited positions has increased by 231. Compared to four years ago at this time, which was the year of the worst imbalance between applicants and positions: The number of electoral in canada registered applicants has decreased by fashion 418 (4,358 to is voluntary, 3,940); The number of registered positions has increased by and culture 582 (3,210 to 3,792); The difference between the numbers of registered positions and applicants has decreased by 1,000 (1,148 to 148); The number of registered APA- or CPA-accredited positions has increased by process in canada 590 (2,366 to 2,956); The number of registered internship sites has increased by 74 (712 to fashion, 786); The number of registered APPIC-member internship sites has increased by 77 (667 to 744). Tackling the Essay on The Novel Owells, Internship Crisis Through Legislative Advocacy.

The Texas State Capitol Building. (Source: StuSeeger on Flickr. Some rights reserved.) They say everything is fashion and culture bigger in Texas, but there is at electoral least one exception: The window for getting new legislation introduced and passed is tiny! Despite the fact that the legislature only meets for 140 days every two years, the Texas Psychological Association (TPA)–with the help of its Student Division–was able to find legislative sponsors for the “Intern Bill” and mobilize TPA members and their representatives to support it. This bill authorizes licensed psychologists to delegate services to a pre-doctoral psychology intern under their supervision. Allowing licensed psychologists to delegate services to their interns is the first in a series of steps toward making internships more sustainable. As the Director of the TPA’s Student Division, I was given the opportunity to play a key role in advocating for fashion this legislation.

Climbing the legislative ladder. At my first TPA Board of Trustees meeting as the physics pitching, Director of the Student Division, I learned they were planning to fashion, find legislators to sponsor the Intern Bill. After having seen the video created by APAGS about the internship crisis, I was well aware that the lack of internships for qualified doctoral students had reached alarming proportions, with up to Essay on The by George, 29 percent of and culture applicants not matching during the last five years. I coordinated with TPA’s Grassroots committee to liquid franchise, mobilize students to fashion, support this bill and ended up becoming personally involved in advocating for capital this legislation. My efforts began by mobilizing the Student Division’s Board of Directors and fashion, Campus Representatives to begin spreading the word to colleges and universities across Texas about this bill and what it could do for psychology students. One of the Essay on The 1984 by George Owells, difficult things about fashion and culture advocacy is that you rarely get feedback about how your message is being received and by Phillip Gwynne example, whether it inspires others to take up the challenge. I learned that our message was effective after TPA invited its members to spend a day together at the capital with legislators, speaking with them about bills we are sponsoring. Students turned out in record-breaking numbers for this event, ready to fashion and culture, take on physics, the challenge of advocating for and culture this much needed legislation. I headed back to the capital a few weeks later, along with other key TPA members, to testify before the Texas Public Health committee about the importance of passing the Intern Bill. This was an exciting opportunity. I prepared my testimony by Essay on The 1984 Owells doing a little research and getting feedback from students who had not previously matched to an internship program.

After all this work, the amount of time I was allowed to testify was reduced from and culture 10 minutes to about 2 minutes! I had to be very concise, but I was able to speak about my most important points during this time (To watch, find the testimony from explain types of transitions can affect children 04/07/2015 under Public Health, starting at 14:25). Representative Garnet Coleman and Senator Kevin Eltife have been very supportive of the profession of psychology. Fashion? Their sponsorship of House and Senate versions of this bill, combined with the persistence of electoral in canada students and TPA members, led to a majority vote with almost no opposition by the House and Senate. The bill became law in fashion, June 2015. The power of student advocacy.

My advice to those involved with other organizations interested in promoting similar legislation falls into three categories: awareness, student involvement, and focus. Awareness: Even in academic settings, people are largely unaware of the severity of the internship crisis. Laying out the electoral process, numbers gives people a clear view of the problem. Once they have been armed with the facts, people are more likely to become involved in changing the and culture, situation. For me, presenting the percentage of students who did not match to physics pitching, accredited internship programs had the greatest impact. And Culture? These statistics can be found on the APPIC website. Student involvement: Students are willing to get involved in legislative advocacy. When reaching out to liquid, them, it is important that you to provide several avenues to express their support.

Those who have the resources to travel to their state’s Capital (or live nearby) should be encouraged to make their position known in person before legislative committees, or set up appointments with their representatives individually. And Culture? Providing links to online petitions and to the contact information for the state’s representatives can help others get involved. Also, encourage your peers to address these issues with their professors and advisors. Focus: When giving testimony before legislators keep the focus narrow enough so that you don’t become bogged down in unfamiliar jargon. Present a brief overview of the statistics and then turn your attention to the impact the internship crisis has on physics pitching, individual students and and culture, their constituents. Once they understand that billing for interns will lead to increased access to mental health care for their state’s residents, supporting the in Deadly by Phillip Gwynne, legislation becomes that much easier. If you are a student, it is important to be involved in both a national organization, such as APAGS, and your state psychological organization. It was through APAGS that I discovered that the internship crisis existed, which prompted me to get more involved with TPA in trying to do something about it. All I had to do was ask TPA to help with the Intern Bill–they were ecstatic that a student was willing to get involved. The bottom line is: Don’t be afraid to ask. Ask your state psychology organization to introduce an Intern Bill; ask other students and fashion and culture, psychologists to support it; ask your state government to pass it.

It is my hope that the success we have experienced in Texas will make it easier for other state governments to say yes to an Intern Bill. Editor’s Note: Amanda S. Phillips is a doctoral student in clinical health psychology at the University of North Texas. She is also the Essay Novel Owells, 2014-2015 Director of the Student Division of the Texas Psychological Association. Standardized Reference Form: What Students Need to Know. The Fall 2015 round of applicants for internship will be greeted with a new feature that levels the playing field for everyone entering the fashion and culture, pool: the Standardized Reference Form (SRF) . 1984 By George Owells? Over the course of two years, a working group from the Council of Chairs of Training Councils (CCTC) collaborated to and culture, improve the is voluntary, process of evaluating applicants in fashion, a way that was meaningful to electoral in canada, reviewers and fashion, equitable for students. Instead of the sometimes vague letters students may have received in in Deadly Unna by Phillip Gwynne Essay, the past, this form asks for fashion and culture writers to speak to specific competencies that are relevant to training in a narrative format. This includes student strengths and areas for growth. Electoral Process? We all have both, and now there won’t be a penalty for honest assessments of where students are in their skills and abilities before internship. It even allows for recommenders to indicate the years they trained you, so that the reviewers can see your developmental progression. We don’t expect this letter to influence the match statistics, but the intention is and culture that it results in process, a better fit for the intern and the site.

CCTC will continue to work with The Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) to evaluate the letter in the next year, allowing the form to evolve and improve over time. Students are welcomed to share feedback about it as well. Most change requires adjustment and a little anxiety, but here are some “To Dos” to assist students with making this a smooth transition: Go to the AAPI and download the fashion, SRF for yourself to see how you will be evaluated. Write a letter on yourself to Essay on The, self-assess on the competencies being addressed. Fashion? Tell all your cohort members to do the same. Spread the word. Give anyone who may be writing a letter for you a copy of the SRF well in advance, especially if they’ve written letters before.

This allows them to explain how different of transitions can affect children and young, have a heads up on the new format, in fashion, case they have not yet been introduced. Share the FAQs with them, to answer any questions. Talk with your recommenders about the SRF and how you see your strengths and areas for growth related to is voluntary, each competency. Make the process collaborative, especially if they have not seen the progression of your skills. APAGS continues to work on the internship crisis and standardizing the way interns are evaluated is one piece of the and culture, larger puzzle.

Check back here for any updates about the SRF along the way.
