A Woman#8217;s Work: Ann Plato#8217;s Republic. William King, #8220;Phyllis Wheatley?#8221; She was named for the ship that stole her away. At seven years old, Phillis Wheatley crossed the Atlantic from McDonald's Essay West Africa, another dot in the mosaic of roughly six million enslaved Africans who landed in ottoman, the Americas between 1700 and 1808. Small and so young, she became Boston merchant John Wheatley’s gift to wife Susannah. Early on, Phillis’ talent shone. She mastered Latin and Greek, earning transatlantic praise for her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral , the first book of poetry by an African-American, published in McDonald's, London in 1773. She sat for an author portrait, toured England, met George Washington, and, finally, secured her freedom before dying, impoverished, in 1784. Early Americans and early Americanists have pored over her too-brief career ever since. Phillis Wheatley’s byline alone, threading together her sacrifice and of communication to, her sale, bears hard history in it. McDonald's Case Study. As an African-American founding mother of our national literary tradition, Wheatley owns a leading role in survey classes, public statues, and about and Gang, cultural memory.
Wheatley’s last manuscript, 300 pages of poetry, may be lost; but we hold pieces of Case Study Essay, her legacy intact. End. Here at the Massachusetts Historical Society, I pass by her writing desk nearly every day. It’s not the one in her formal portrait. Rather, it’s the mahogany “card or tea table” that John Wheatley gifted Phillis with sometime during her long servitude. Ball-and-claw feet grip the carpet. A neat apron-front drawer has room enough for cards, ink, and a few cottony sheets of colonial paper. Sold at auction to settle her heavy debts, the poet’s desk is a rich artifact of McDonald's Case Study Essay, literary technology, an Enlightenment-era laptop. Polished and headline, bare, Phillis Wheatley’s desk raises the question: Who took up her pen? Today, resuming my series on McDonald's Study early American women intellectuals, I’ll focus on Ann Plato, a Hartford, Conn., schoolteacher who was, in many ways, Wheatley’s direct heir. On Civil Disobedience. Or so argued the abolitionist preacher James W.C.
Pennington in his opening attestation of Plato’s 1841 Essays; Including Biographies and Miscellaneous Pieces, in Prose and Poetry . Essay. Pennington, then deep at ottoman end, work on his own book, The Origin and Study, History of the Colored People (1841), made a compelling case for Plato’s historical significance. Daily Mail Headline Generator. Of African-American and Native American ancestry, Plato ( fl . 1824-1870), had, according to McDonald's Case Study Essay, Pennington, suffered in order to persevere as a literary artist. Disobedience. By his lights, Ann Plato therefore joined the ranks of Wheatley, the Roman playwright Terence, and Case Study Essay, the Jamaican poet Francis Williams. “These all served in adversity,” Pennington reminded readers, “and afterwards found that nature had no objection , at least to their serving the world in on civil, high repute as poets… But as Greece had a Plato why may we not have a Platoess?” For researchers, the long-forgotten, local “Platoess” has proved near-mythic to examine. A great deal of excellent biographical spadework has been done by Ron Welburn, in Hartford’s Ann Plato and the Native Borders of Identity (Albany: SUNY Press, 2015). Ann Plato presents a critical dilemma for scholars, as Welburn points out, since she “left neither entry nor exit signs,” opting to Essay, blur her contributions within the historical record. Functions. Tracing Plato’s education from eastern Long Island to her Connecticut teaching career, Welburn weaves in the intellectual “places in between,” where Ann Plato also thrived: praying at the Talcott Street (Colored) Congregational Church, publishing poetry in The Colored American newspaper, and––like so many other Americans––possibly wending her way West, to Iowa, in the Reconstruction era. To deal with Plato on any critical level is tough. Though she produced several shorter (and often near/anonymous) pieces, Ann Plato’s legacy rises or falls on Essay her single volume, Essays . A Channel Of Communication Refers. Between her conduct book’s rote lines lies a wealth of African-Americans’ sense of experience, education, history.
A pastiche of prose parables, morality tales, advice for youths, and poetry humming with political and Case, religious commentary: Ann Plato’s book is at home in the early republic. Plato’s Essays split along three paths, marked out “Prose,” “Biographies,” and “Poetry.” To read Plato is to sink fully into the antebellum schoolroom. The first section instructs the reader via “lessons from nature,” outlining the Christian principles of education, diligence, and human management functions, obedience needed to Case Essay, frame a good character. Essay Delinquency And Gang. Youth remains the best “season” to cultivate ideal habits. Plato’s voice steers the McDonald's Case Study Essay narrative; she is to quiet but firm.
In one essay, she frets that her female pupils will favor making a “showy appearance” more than “prizing the gift” of McDonald's Essay, entrance into the “temple of knowledge.” In another piece, she urges students to illegal United, excel, since “mediocrity is a proof of weakness; and perfection may always be purchased by application.” Like her literary peers, Ann Plato keeps her “Prose” primly aspirational with “Eminence from Obscurity,” a listicle of “great” European men who have “risen from humble stations” and laboring lives to become artists and scholars. Plato wraps up “Prose” with a trinity of tragic reflections. “Life is McDonald's Study Essay Short” documents the first moments of new orphans, in freefall after a family funeral. “Death of the Christian,” a shorter and more ambitious work, namechecks a set of Essay Delinquency and Gang, classical and modern references (Caesar, Pollok, Byron, Chesterfield, Addison). There, Plato reels in cultured readers with her impressive grasp of Case Study, Anglo-American literature. Then she steps back, sealing her conclusion with an appeal to godly virtue. “Learn with what superior dignity of mind a Christian can die,” Plato writes. A Channel Refers. Certainly, Pennington’s “authoress” knew her audience, for Plato folds lost friends into her saga. The second part, “Biographies,” features short eulogies of Essay, four women, all local acquaintances who died young (likely of consumption). Using their lives to reinforce cherished notions of Christian morality and youthful piety, Plato attempts women’s biography with sentimental verve. Industrious, mild, and ever sweetened by mail, death’s approach, Plato’s subjects melt and McDonald's Study, sway into on civil disobedience, one another’s path. Plato is McDonald's Essay more interested in presenting a template than a person, putting her work in essay, line with the religious tracts, advice books, and “manners” novels that fellow New Englanders enjoyed. Then, in the space of a few stanzas, Plato turns inward, and against the crowd.
Ann Plato is best known for McDonald's Case, her poem, “The Natives of America,” an eloquent reflection on her biracial identity, which features prominently in her Essays ’ final pages. Go ahead, read it. Plato opens in a familiar, Longfellow-esque tone, with a child begging for a story from her father’s lap. Generator. But the narrative she learns is one of conquest and loss. Here is a key sample: “Wars ensued. They knew the handling of firearms. / Mothers spoke,––no fear this breast alarms, / They will not cruelly us oppress, / Or thus our lands possess. / Alas it was a cruel day; we were crush’d: / Into the dark woods we rush’d / To seek a refuge. / My daughter, we are now diminish’d, unknown, / Unfelt!
Alas! no tender tone / To cheer us when the hunt is done; / Fathers sleep––we’re silent every one.” If Plato’s individual eulogies run drab, embroidered with obligatory accents of Christian piety, her reconstruction of the Native American experience is raw, powerful, and worth your read. Part of why I began this project was to read more early American thinkers who sensed their histories, like Phillis Wheatley’s or Ann Plato’s, were diminished, unfelt, unknown. Reading Ann Plato’s republic is a way to understand the kind of historical figure extolled by Anna Julia Cooper in A Voice From the South (1892), the “open-eyed but hitherto voiceless Black Woman of America.” It’s also a route to retrace how early American women wrote about McDonald's Case Essay themselves en route to Curbing illegal in the examples, Seneca Falls, through the Civil War, beyond the cultural upheavals of Reconstruction, and into a modern realm of world literature that Phillis Wheatley glimpsed, far too briefly. For, as “A Lady from Philadelphia,” asked in an 1885 issue of Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine : “Why should not the coming novelist be a woman as well as an African? She––the woman of that race––has some claims on Fate which are not yet paid up.” The Society for U.S. McDonald's Case. Intellectual History is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization. Foreword: Mathematics for a Modern Age. Governor of Georgia. Now more than ever, our daily lives are directly affected by mathematics. I'm not just talking about the grades students get or how many mathematics classes they have to take.
I'm talking about answering the phone, faxing a document, or driving a car. Daily Mail Headline Generator! I'm talking about buying medicine for your family, building a house, and listening to music. Case Essay! Mathematics has also helped bring us things that indirectly affect us, like the discoveries of DNA, weather patterns, and how to use light as a surgical tool. It has helped us walk on the moon, create microchips, and a channel of communication to, transmit images across thousands of McDonald's Study, miles. Daily! With mathematics, we design models to test our ideas and Study Essay, refine them, from nerve impulses to human behavior, volcanoes to food. Mathematics is everywhere. But mathematics has always been around, and the concepts it uses have always helped us.
So why is mathematics so much more important to our lives now than it was then? Years ago, in the eras of the abacus or slide rule, information took a lot longer to sort through, but now it is easy to chart a course, assay a risk, or compare statistics. Information is more abundant than ever. You can find answers about everything from world politics to school lunches almost as soon as you think of the questions. This new speed of access to volumes of information obviously brings good. thingslike better medical information, better building materials, and more diverse options in business and education. The down side to all of this is a channel of communication refers, that as easily as there can be information, there can be misuse of information.
So what does this mean for our children? More than ever, they need to be mathematically savvy. Learning to think and reason mathematically is the only way our children can be sure that they are in McDonald's, control, not being controlled . More practically, almost every job these days requires at least some elementary understanding of mathematics. In fact, many of the jobs that keep our country competitive and successful in Violence, the global market are jobs that require more than basic mathematics comprehension. Not that everyone needs to be able to program a computer or predict the stock market, but with the vastly increased speed of statistical calculation (and manipulation) and easier and faster global communication, our children need to know what a number means, where it came from, and McDonald's Case Study Essay, how best to of communication refers judge its veracity. As the Case Study Essay Governor of Georgia, I take all of management functions, this pretty seriously. I know the importance of bringing businesses to my state to create jobs for Georgians. The world, however, is their marketplace; to be healthy, competitive, and Study, economically secure, our citizens must understand mathematics. They need to become comfortable with the refers to notion of mathematics as a tool for life. G OVERNOR Z ELL M ILLER was elected Governor of the state of McDonald's Study Essay, Georgia in 1990. Since taking office, his love of teaching and a channel of communication refers to, commitment to education has resulted in one of the most ambitious agendas to McDonald's Essay improve public education in this century.

For over ten years the Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB) has worked to support the improvement of mathematics education. The work of the Board becomes visible largely through publications, beginning with Everybody Counts (1989) and Essay, Reshaping School Mathematics (1990). Functions! High School Mathematics at Work builds on this prior work.
Like Measuring Up (1992), it contains student tasks; like Mathematical Preparation of the Technical Work Force (1995), it highlights the mathematics needed for careers. High School Mathematics at Work was developed through the Case Study Essay efforts of more people than can be named individually here. We gratefully acknowledge the generous financial support of the Pew Charitable Trusts, and thank both Robert Schwartz for his special encouragement with this project when he was Director of daily mail headline, their Education Programs, as well as Janet Kroll for her continuing interest and support as our program officer. The project was launched as a 12th grade sequel to Measuring Up through the initiative of Linda P. Rosen. The MSEB first envisioned that this sequel would illuminate some features of high-quality high school mathematics teaching and learning through standards-based assessment tasks. The growing interest in school-to-work issues, however, led to our giving this theme major prominence. With this new focus, Lynn Arthur Steen and Susan Forman designed the. project, secured funding, collected mathematical examples, commissioned essays, and worked with the Task Force, first as members of the MSEB staff and later as consultants. We also thank Daniel Goroff for Case Study Essay his leadership during a period of staff transition. Examples of mathematical tasks were solicited over a period of two years from a wide variety of sources, as described in Appendix A. From the hundreds of examples that were contributed, the Task Force selected about two dozen for inclusion, wrote first drafts of those mathematical examples, and to, identified essay topics and authors.
The resulting collection of Study, examples and essays was molded into its current form by Bradford Findell, serving as editor, under the guidance of Glenda Lappan, Alan Schoenfeld, and ottoman empire end, Harvey Keynes, with the assistance of Cathy Kessel, and with substantial input from Deborah Ball, Sadie Bragg, Gail Burrill, Shari Coston, Shelley Ferguson, Melvin George, Rick Jennings, Jim Leitzel, Tony Martinez, Pamela Matthews, Patrick McCray, and Jack Price. 20 Best And Worst Fonts To Use On Your Resume. Before you even walk into Essay a job interview you’ve made a first impression on the interviewer. How? Through your resume. According to a study conducted by the job search site TheLadders.com, recruiters spend only about six seconds scanning a resume. So it’s essential that your resume makes a great first impression — that it looks professional and well organized. How do you do that? You start by using a resume font people can actually read (that#8217;s what this post is for), then you design a resume that stands out from the rest (here#8217;s how you do that).
When you have both these things you go into Canva and design the a channel of communication refers to thing for free in no time (here#8217;s how you upload fonts from this article into McDonald's Canva and here#8217;s where you go in Canva to start your new resume design right now). Times New Roman is probably the most commonly chosen fonts for resumes — the very reason you should avoid it, and essay disobedience why it appears on our “Worst” list. So if you don’t want your resume to look like hundreds of Case Essay others, you’ll want to choose something else. And Garamond is a great alternative. A timeless serif typeface like Times New Roman, Garamond’s precursors have been in use for around 500 years. The modern version has the benefit of giving your resume a classic, polished look that’s much more interesting that the overused Times New Roman. Mail Generator. As a bonus, if you’re struggling to condense your resume to one to two pages (which is a good idea), Garamond can help you fit more text on a page without sacrificing readability by lowering the font size or crowding your design by tightening up the McDonald's Case spacing. This simple, sophisticated sans-serif typeface, designed in empire end England in McDonald's Study the 1920s, will give your resume a look that is both classic and modern.
It’s used widely in the UK (across the British Railways system, by the BBC) and States elsewhere. You might also notice that Gill Sans is very similar to the custom lettering featured on the famous, WWII-era “Keep Calm and McDonald's Case Study Carry On” poster, rediscovered at a British bookstore in 2000 and human functions subsequently popularized with many replicas of the design. McDonald's Case Study Essay. You’ll find this font distributed with Mac OS X and some Microsoft software as Gill Sans MT. About. Cambria, a serif font, is part of McDonald's Case Study a suite of typefaces called the ClearType Font Collection, which has been widely distributed with Microsoft Office programs. These typefaces (Calibri, Cambria, Candara, Consolas, Constantia, and Corbel) were designed specifically to perform well on Essay about and Gang Violence, computer monitors.
The studio that created Cambria describes it as “the ‘new Times New Roman”…designed specifically for on-screen reading, while still remaining applicable for print,” thanks to Case its sturdy letter construction that retains legibility even at small sizes. Curbing Examples. This makes Cambria a good choice for both online and Study printed resumes. Wikimedia Commons/Hans Hoogglans. Although it has been the default Microsoft Word font since 2007, Calibri is still not used as often as Arial, which landed on ottoman, our “Worst” list for that reason. This font has other things going for it, though; professional resume writer Donna Svei points out McDonald's Study, that typing in Calibri at a 12 pt. size will produce around 500 to 750 words, the immigration in the Essay examples ideal length of a two-page resume. McDonald's Study Essay. Our third and Essay about Violence last selection from Microsoft’s ClearType Font Collection, Constantia’s rounder letterforms make it look more friendly and less stuffy than many serif typefaces.
It’s also suitable for use both on-screen and in printed documents, making it useful for when you need to distribute your resume in Essay both digital and hard copy form. Originally designed for corporate use, Lato is sans-serif font created to look neutral in body copy but have some unique traits at larger sizes. It comes in a wide range of weights and styles, though the “hairline,” “thin,” and “light” weights will be too hard to see at a channel of communication to, small sizes. Study Essay. It’s available for download (free for both personal and commercial use) and for web use on Google Fonts. Didot is a distinctive serif font with an upscale look (perhaps a product of resource management functions its Parisian roots). Study Essay. This classy typeface can lend some style to your resume and essay on civil disobedience seems to be particularly popular for Essay industries like fashion and photography. However, its delicate serifs display most clearly at larger sizes, so you’ll do best saving Didot for headings rather than body copy.

This Swiss sans-serif typeface is considered by many designers and Case Study Essay typographers to be the king of about Delinquency and Gang Violence fonts. Study Essay. It even has its own self-titled documentary film. Thanks to its modern, clean lines and exceptional clarity, Helvetica is widely used in everything from major corporate logos (BMW, American Airlines, Microsoft) to New York City’s subway signs. To give your resume a clean and contemporary look that’s still professional, try Helvetica. It’s included with Mac operating systems, but if you’re wanting to Curbing United States examples use it with Windows, you’ll have to purchase it.
Georgia is another alternative to McDonald's Times New Roman. This serif font has letterforms with thicker strokes that make it easy to read even at small sizes. Plus, because it was created specifically for clarity on resource functions, computer monitors, it looks great viewed on any digital document, such as if you’re sending your resume as a PDF. This versatile sans-serif font has a very clean, crisp appearance that will give any resume an updated look. Case Essay. It has multiple weights that you can use to differentiate the various sections and features of your resume, but you should probably avoid the “book” and “light” weights, as well as any condensed versions — they can be hard to read. Avenir Next is another good option; it was released as a follow-up to empire Avenir to Study improve the Delinquency Violence font’s on-screen display capabilities.
Dribbble/Mario Leo Fasolo. Surprised this one is on the list? There’s nothing wrong with the font in itself, it’s just that it has been (over)used and abused. McDonald's. Since everyone else is using it on their resumes, yours won’t stand out. Plus, Times New Roman is hard to read at very small sizes and Delinquency doesn’t display particularly well on screens. Like Gill Sans on our “Best” list, Futura was created in the 1920s.
Except this sans-serif typeface was designed in Germany and McDonald's is more geometric in form. Although it’s a clean, attractive font, the overall appearance is somewhat stylized and atypical. With quirks like unusually tall lowercase letters and about Delinquency a jarring contrast between sharp and round letter shapes, Futura leans more toward decorative and interesting (a.k.a, a display font, meant to be used sparingly) than practical for text-heavy documents like resumes. In the overused category, Arial is Times New Roman’s sans-serif equivalent. McDonald's Study. Using a font that’s so common (and, some would say, boring) may be perceived as a lazy choice — not putting much thought or effort into your resume. Plus, Arial is basically an ottoman adaptation of Helvetica that’s a little looser and more irregular in its construction. There’s nothing wrong with conventional fonts, but there are better sans-serif choices out there than Arial. Designed to replicate the look of a typewriter and Case Study later adapted for use on actual electric typewriters, this font makes it look like — you guessed it — you typed your resume on a typewriter. Which you didn’t — unless you haven’t updated your resume in 30 some-odd years. Plus, because this is daily headline, a monospaced typeface (every letter is spaced equally, as opposed to McDonald's most other proportionally spaced fonts) it can look a little unnatural, particularly for whole pages of text. Tempted to put your name at the top of your resume in a script that looks like handwriting to give it a little personality?
Don’t do it! And especially don’t use Brush Script, which has been so overused that it now looks cheap and dated rather than retro and nostalgic (it was designed in 1942). Curbing Illegal United States Examples. While certain creative industries will offer some leeway in playing with the appearance of your resume, when in doubt, it’s always a safe bet to stick to conservative font choices (which means no scripts or other display fonts). Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past several years, you’ll know that using Comic Sans is considered the cardinal sin of font choices. Case. It was created in a channel refers to 1994 to replicate the look of comic book speech bubbles, and that’s about all it’s appropriate for. McDonald's Case Study Essay. The casual, almost childish look of the font makes it distracting in any serious context. And in case you’re wondering why anyone would use Comic Sans on a resume, according to this manager, it does happen. Just remember: it’s a good rule of Curbing illegal immigration Essay thumb to McDonald's Essay stay far away from any font that might possibly come across as fun, flowery, flashy, or funky.
Century Gothic has a sleek, modern look, but it’s probably a little too irregular for management functions resumes. Additionally, the thin letters of this font’s regular weight can be hard to read, particularly at small sizes. There’s really no good reason anyone should want to use this on a resume, but people seem to like it. So if you’re tempted to give your resume an adventurous or exotic air with Papyrus, resist. This font is so cliche (probably second only to Comic Sans) that is McDonald's Case Essay, has become something of a joke — Fast Co. Design puts it this way: “as everyone who has written a school project over the last decade will tell you, Papyrus is the font you use to spell out the word #8220;Egypt.#8221; Want to make a bold, confident impression with your resume? You don’t need a bold, heavy font to ottoman do it. Impact is most likely intended for use in McDonald's Case all caps for headlines, but because it includes lowercase letters, people are sure to use it for Curbing illegal in the United body copy, where it’s almost impossible to McDonald's Essay read. Yes, Trajan Pro has a dignified, important feel, but it would be more appropriate etched into stone than typed on your resume. Essay About Delinquency. That’s because the typeface was inspired by the letterforms carved into Trajan’s Column, a monument dedicated to the Roman emperor of the same name.
The font only McDonald's, has capital letters and small caps (no lowercase option), which makes it unsuitable for resource management functions typing out readable sentences on your resume. So it’s probably a good idea to leave Trajan to the movie posters (more than 400 of them), particularly those starring Russell Crowe. For resumes, a font size of 10 to 12 pt. (depending on the particular font, but no smaller than that) is standard. Case Study. Larger sizes are acceptable for headings or subheadings. Remember that everyone viewing your resume on a computer will have different fonts installed, and you don’t want your carefully chosen typeface automatically replaced with a substitute that messes up the on civil document’s appearance and formatting. That’s why it’s a good idea to Case Essay always save and send your resume as a PDF, which preserves the original appearance (unlike a MS Word document). Pollution is generally categorized by how it enters a lake – either point source or non-point source pollution. a) Point source pollution: Point source pollution is from pollutants that enter a body of water, which can be attributed to a source, place and McDonald's, specific authors. The point source pollution is easier to manage compared to non-point sources. b) Non-point sources: Non-point source pollution is from Pollutants that enter a body of water which cannot be attributed to ottoman end, a specific source, place and authors. Rather, this pollution comes from many diffuse sources and McDonald's Essay, often occurs in small amounts, but can focus on freshwater lakes and other resources. Examples of point sources discharging are industrial waste, sewage from ottoman end, wastewater treatment plants, dumping deposit and other dangerous illegal chemical (nuclear waste). Heat can also be a contaminant.
For example, the central water often one of the components of the cool overheating. Once inserted, hot water is released into McDonald's Study, nearby lakes, where the temperature changes from the a channel refers to lake. This heat is a form of pollution, because it can be harmful and kill aquatic organisms including fish Species sensitive to temperature change. Another example of widespread environmental contamination is the legal discharge of waste water and Case Study, other chemicals. For example, Detroit, Michigan reports available more than 700 million gallons of a channel of communication refers to, wastewater per day and 150 million pounds of Case Study, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), toxic each year in the Detroit River, which serves as a link between Lake Huron and Lake Erie2. Since the immigration in the States Essay examples origin of the point source pollution is often it is much easier to handle than non-point pollution sources. If the pollution originates in remote locations from water point, or is there a large number of small diffuse sources, it is called non-point sources. No identifiable source such contamination is often difficult to Case Study Essay, manage; it is difficult to estimate how much pollution is ottoman end, actually happening and what impact. McDonald's. Diffuse sources include agricultural runoff (pesticides, fertilizers), acid rain deposition and nitrate leaching from septic tanks.
Diffuse sources represent most of the impurities in the water systems. 3.4 Impacts of lake pollution. Whatever the source of the human management contamination can affect aquatic life in many ways. In general, the pollution reduces the quality of McDonald's Case Study, water. It can also be the variety of wildlife; particularly sensitive species. Pollution of the lake has been documented as contributing to a variety of health problems and diseases in humans. Curbing Immigration States Essay Examples. It has also been shown to have significant negative impacts on wildlife and the environment as a whole. McDonald's Case Study Essay. There are a few different effects of resource management functions, lake pollution, which are essential for humans. The effects of pollution of the lake are not always immediate. They are not always seen on the contaminated site. Case Study Essay. They are sometimes never known by the person responsible for the pollution.
A pollution of the lake, however, has a great impact on the lives of everyone. With the knowledge, testing and preparation, water pollution can be reduced. It does not take much effort – just a little thought. Lake pollution can pose health dangers to essay on civil disobedience, humans who come into Essay, contact with it, either directly or indirectly. The risk of your health being negatively impacted by polluted drinking water in empire end, a developed country is McDonald's, small in a channel refers to, comparison with developing countries. However, it is possible to become ill from contaminated water. For example, if you are walking, you can get giardiasis, which can cause severe nausea and vomiting as the Case presentation of acute symptoms to develop. This infection is caused by water that has been polluted by untreated animal waste in the drinking waterways. In anthropogenic environments such as cities and villages, potential toxins are much more numerous. Another high risk of lake pollution is Mercury contamination.
Mercury has been found to interfere with the development of the central nervous system in fetuses and young children, which could potentially lead to a large amount of long-term side effects. 3.6 Impact of lake pollution on ecosystem. Lake pollution also causes negative effects within the environment to animals and their habitats. The entry of pollutants in Curbing immigration States examples, lakes has a wide range of effects. It is possible for pollutants, to change the water temperature enough to fish force in McDonald's Study Essay, search of colder waters. This can even create an ecological dead zone. The pollution of lakes can also significantly increase the rate of algal blooms. Ottoman End. These flowers create massive destruction of fish as oxygen is depleted in water and suffocate fish.
Fish can be killed, even if excessive algae get caught in their gills. 3.7 Definition of lake maintenance. There are numerous reasons to pay close attention to the lake maintenance, including: a) Preventing fish kill; b) Reducing sediment buildup. c) Reducing aquatic weed growth. d) Reducing need for synthetic algaecides. e) Improving irrigation water quality. f) Reducing harmful gases like CO2 and Methane. g) Reducing mosquitoes. h) Increasing the Ozone content of the water. i) Reduce Bacteria and odor.
To maintain a high water quality the lake requires a maintenance plan. Apart from preventing nutrient inflows to the lake from the catchment or surrounding farm land and road runoff, a key element of that plan should be creating plans that will help the lake to maintain clean. 3.8 Contribution of lake maintenance to the future of aquatic system. Fresh water is essential to human life and economic wellbeing, and societies draw strongly on rivers, lakes, wetlands, and underground aquifers to supply water for drinking, irrigating crops, and running industrial processes. Case Study Essay. The benefits of these extractive uses of fresh water have traditionally overshadowed the Curbing immigration United States equally important benefits of water that remains in stream to sustain healthy aquatic ecosystems. There is growing recognition that functionally intact and Case Study, biologically complex freshwater ecosystems provide many economically valuable commodities and services to refers, society. Lakes provide people with many services: aesthetic enjoyment, recreation, fish, and transportation, water for irrigation, drinking and dilution of pollutants.
Lake degradation results from Case Study, excessive nutrient inputs, toxic substances, habitat loss, overfishing, species invasions and extirpations. The goal of management is to balance the uses of empire, lakes with conservation measures to sustain ecosystem services over time (Carpenter #038; Lathrop 1999). A degraded lake can have its water quality improved through implementing appropriate management strategies. This process is variously known as lake restoration, remediation or rehabilitation. 4.1 Lake restoration. It is McDonald's Case Essay, important to recognize that the restoration program will take time and will not return the lake to a once untouched condition that it may have had earlier in its life, but it could improve the water quality to meet a specified water quality goal. The ability to achieve that goal for empire end a specific degraded lake will be determined by the nutrient budget (internal versus external loads), how well the Case Essay in-lake processes are known, the degree of a channel of communication, restoration required to Case Study Essay, achieve the goal and the funding available to implement the management strategies required to achieve that degree of restoration.
Other than cost, there are few limits on empire the size, shape or depth of lake that can be restored. While there is an implicit expectation that restoration will return the McDonald's lake to its original condition, the a channel reality is that some processes on the way to degradation are irreversible (Carpenter #038; Lathrop, 1999). Consequently, the expectation of restoration needs to be tempered with the knowledge that the lake may never reach its original state and that the objective of a restoration project will be to rehabilitate the lake to improve the water quality and McDonald's Essay, lake conditions to an achievable level. This rehabilitation level then becomes a management goal. The goals need to be realistic and both socially and culturally acceptable. Restoring a degraded lake to a new desirable condition is an adaptive management process which must include a monitoring program to assess the success of empire end, management strategies employed to reach that goal, and the flexibility to adapt the management strategies based on Essay those monitoring results. Figure 4.1.a. shows the maintenance flow diagram for the rehabilitation of a lake. The issues, goals and measures of a channel of communication refers to, success can be filled in and additional sections listing the McDonald's Essay tools to be used can be added. The role of the environmental consultant at key points indicated by red arrows is optional depending on the competence of the lake manager and the size of the lake. A certified engineering consultant is mandatory for any structural changes to a dam.
4.2 Practical maintenance goals in Lake Restoration. Practical maintenance goals for that lake would include: a. To reduce or eliminate the occurrence of management functions, nuisance cyanobacteria blooms. b. To improve the water quality of the lake from hypertrophic to super trophic or eutrophic. c. To reduce the Case Study Essay abundance of aquatic macrophysics in the lake to illegal immigration in the examples, enable unimpeded use of the lake for contact recreation, and. d. To maintain or enhance the fishery in the lake and its tributaries. These goals are essential to restoring of the lake. They are closely linked that changes made to achieve one goal will interact with and affect the other goals. The following is a range of maintenance tools that have been used for the restoration of degraded lake. The most recent tool ‘Computer modelling’ uses environmental, climate and water quality / biogeochemical monitoring data from the lake to build a simulation of the lake to estimate the likely benefits to the lake of Case Study, applying one or more of the maintenance tools. These tools are including: The weight of human resource functions, evidence indicates that the key to restoring the water quality of Case Essay, lake and its fishery is the management of the lake weed.
There are four approaches to this issue: (1) Mechanical weeds harvesting; (3) Bio manipulation and. (4) Changing water levels. Before undertaking any strategy to control lake weeds, there needs to be a clear understanding of the goal and Curbing illegal in the Essay, the consequences of each action. The weight of evidence of the importance of lake weeds includes the fact that the tall weeds remove all the McDonald's Case Essay NO3-N from the lake water during spring when there are high inflows of NO3-N enriched stream water. This evidence also suggests that under low flows the weeds become N-limited and, being unable to sustain the amount of biomass with the nutrients available, they senesce releasing the mail nutrients in the plants back into the water. Waste water treatment uses holding ponds and McDonald's Essay, wetlands for reducing the nutrient load before the water is released into an open waterway. The main disadvantages of the technique are that,
1) To be efficient they cover a large area to give sufficient contact time for nutrient and sediment stripping, 2) They are less efficient at removing P than N, and. 3) They may not cope with flood flows and the stream short circuits directly to the lake with no renovation. Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) are a new restoration concept where emergent wetland plants are grown in buoyant rafts which are moored in a lake or stream. These rafts are constructed from recycled plastic (PET drink bottles) in ottoman empire, various sized sections that could be 2 m by 3 m for ease of handling and joined together later. Study. The plants are grown in recesses in the raft and their roots extend down into the water where they assimilate the N and P. The FTWs are aesthetically pleasing and disobedience, blend in with the natural lake shore environment (Figure 4.2.a) and Study, provide additional habitat for birds and koura. Onshore management to reduce nutrient inputs to the lake should look at the sources of those nutrients. However, because the lag time between the essay on civil contamination of the Study groundwater and that contaminated groundwater reaching the lake, nutrient stripping of the groundwater at the lake edge is ottoman, also essential. This is best achieved using marginal wetland buffer zones (Figure 4.2.b). The surface or unconfined groundwater aquifer is the most vulnerable to contamination in the catchment as it receives the McDonald's Case Essay infiltrating rainwater percolating down through the soil. It is this surface groundwater layer that enters the lake at the lake edge.
• This option may be more expensive and less culturally sensitive than entraining the drain flow through a shore line holding zone behind a wall of floating treatment wetlands. Essay. Another alternative is to divert the storm water into a “spill drain” behind the riparian buffer zone. Both of Case Study Essay, these options dissipate the energy of the storm water inflow so that it does not move out into the body of the lake. Dispersing the and Gang flow behind the riparian buffer zone will cause all the sediment to remain on shore and the nutrients in Essay, the storm water to be assimilated by the buffer zone plants. A stream diversion channel is mail headline, a temporary practice to McDonald's Case Essay, convey stream flow in an environmentally safe manner around or through a construction site while a permanent structure or conveyance is being installed in mail headline, the stream channel. • Flushing – external source water. A simple expedient in small lakes overseas is to divert a proportion of a clean stream or river through the McDonald's Study Essay lake to reduce the residence time and thus flush the ottoman empire end N and P in solution and in particulates, such as algae, down the outlet stream. An in-depth analysis of the water quality of the source water would be needed if this option was a serious consideration. • Enhanced flushing using fluctuating water levels. This technique requires manipulation of the weir on the lake to increase and decrease the lake water level at different times of the year to take advantage of specific parts of the Study lake cycle. Seasonal changes in water level are potentially good for fisheries with the most productive fisheries having low water levels in summer (J.
Boubee, NIWA, pers. comm.). Assuming that a suitable storage or dumping area could be found outside of the lake catchment, dredging would remove the sediment that contains the P, N and carbon (C), that has accumulated in the lake over the past few decades. It would also remove the seed bank for lake weeds. The advantages of this option are that the nutrient legacy would be permanently removed and the lake would return to near its original depth. On Civil Disobedience. The disadvantages of this option are the cost to remove the estimated 3 km3 of Case Study Essay, sediment, the destruction of the essay existing ecosystem, and the release of nutrients and other toxic chemicals such as Sulphides during the process of dredging. The release of Sulphide into the lake water would eliminate most aquatic life in the lake. The removal of lake weeds seed banks in the sediment would not be selective and Essay, desirable species for restoring the lake habitat would be removed along with the undesirable species. Aeration replaces the oxygen consumed by ottoman decomposition processes and prevents the development of anoxic conditions which allow P release from the sediments. McDonald's Essay. This technique is often used in resource functions, water supply reservoirs to prevent the anoxic release of P, which favors cyanobacteria growth, and the release of minerals such as iron and McDonald's Study, manganese, which would stain baths, toilets and hand basins in homes and would cause black marks on washing as the water re-oxygenates and these metals precipitate. The advantages of the technique is immigration States Essay, that it is McDonald's, relatively cheap, requiring an air compressor, connection hoses and an aeration bar with anchor blocks, and Curbing illegal United, only needs to run in summer when low oxygen concentrations develop.
In shallow lakes, giant discs pulled through the lake sediments open up the sediment allowing deep penetration of oxygen from the water column. The concept behind this tool is that the McDonald's Essay P will be bound to the iron and manganese oxides in the sediment. This process can work where the bed of the lake has been smothered with organic matter such as the collapse of a weed bed. Modelling of this option (White #038; Gibbs 1991) indicates that the beneficial effect for P binding is daily generator, short lived because as soon as the sediments go anoxic once more, the P is released. McDonald's Case Essay. The technique does introduce oxygen into the otherwise anoxic sediments. Curbing Immigration In The States Essay Examples. This can enhance nitrification and denitrification effectively reducing the N load in the lake. More importantly it supplies oxygen to the decomposition processes so that organic carbon content and thus the sediment oxygen demand are slowly reduced. High sediment oxygen demand is the main cause of bottom water anoxia which drives P release. However, to achieve a significant reduction in sediment oxygen demand, the dicing would need to be repeated frequently. There are three major disadvantage of dicing through weed beds: 1) The organic matter could be driven into the sediment raising the organic carbon content,
2) Every leaf node of most aquatic macrophysics can grow so the dicing would most likely spread the weed more widely, and. 3) The dicing would devastate the McDonald's Case Study benthic mussel beds destroying that part of the fishery. In some overseas restoration studies, concentrated nitrate is injected into the sediment with equipment similar to and Gang, the giant discs to provide an oxygen source for Case Essay decomposition processes in summer (Hemond #038; Lin, 2010). The advantages of ottoman end, this technique are that the release of P is reduced and thus the dominant algal species are not cyanobacteria. The release of Study, arsenic (As) is also suppressed. The disadvantages are that the increase in NO3-N concentration drives high rates of primary production and results in high algal biomass in the lake i.e., the lake goes very green.
This particular piece of research draws attention to the problems of getting the a channel to N and P out of balance i.e., heavy metals such as As and lead (Pb) can be released from the sediments. • When a cyanobacterial bloom has developed, it is Study, too late to use many of the restoration techniques and it is resource management functions, more appropriate to treat the bloom directly to get immediate results. To that end, much research has focused on the use of Essay, clay to floc the bloom so that it settles out of the water column (Sengco #038; Anderson, 2004; Beaulieu et al. 2005; Padilla et al. 2006; Zouet al.
2006; Biyu et al. Essay Disobedience. 2010; Chen #038; Pan, 2012; Pan et al. 2012). While the technique works in the short-term, it does not solve the underlying eutrophication problem and may smother benthic organisms in the sediment. The phosphorus released from the lake sediments is in the form of phosphate which is readily usable by plants, especially algae, for growth. Case Study Essay. While all plants use N and P in the ratio of 16 N to 1 P (Redfield 1958), the symbiotic bacteria inside blue-green algae, hence the essay disobedience name ‘cyanobacteria’, can convert N2 gas in the atmosphere to NO3-N which the algal host can use for growth. This gives cyanobacteria a competitive advantage over all other algal species when there is a surplus of McDonald's Study, P and a deficit of human management, nutrient N in the lake water, and McDonald's Essay, they dominate the a channel of communication to algal species assemblage. Consequently, an excess of P in Case, the water column is said to favor the growth of cyanobacteria and the formation of nuisance blooms.
Phosphorus inactivation is used to empire end, make that P unavailable for algal growth by McDonald's Case Essay binding it to a metal. The result is the reduction in magnitude or elimination of the cyanobacteria blooms (Cooke et al. Human Resource. 2005). There have been many documented applications world-wide and the general conclusion is that this method for treating lakes with high internal P loads can substantially reduce the internal P load. • Phosphorus inactivation with sediment capping. The alternative to alum is to use a granular P inactivation agent.
These products are designed to inactivate P either in the water column or at the sediment surface before settling on the lake bed as a thin (1–2 mm thick) layer. This is the layer referred to as the sediment cap. While a combination of McDonald's Case Study Essay, these tools can address the internal problems in about and Gang, the lake, there is also an McDonald's Study, overriding requirement to a channel of communication to, address the sources of nutrients from the catchment. The Great Lakes form the largest surface freshwater system on Case Essay Earth. Empire End. More than 30 million people live in Case Study, the Great Lakes basin, and the impact of their daily activities, from the water consumed to the waste returned, directly affects the Great Lakes environment.
EPA leads U.S. Daily. efforts to restore and maintain the quality and ecosystems of the Great Lakes watershed. The Great Lakes (also called the Laurentian Great Lakes or the Great Lakes of North America) are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located in northeastern North America, on the Canada–United States border, which connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. Consisting of Case, Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron (or Michigan–Huron), Erie, and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth, containing 21% of the world’s surface fresh water by volume. The total surface is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is Essay about Delinquency and Gang Violence, 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 km3). Due to their sea-like characteristics (rolling waves, sustained winds, strong currents, great depths, and distant horizons) the five Great Lakes have also long been referred to as inland seas. Lake Superior is the second largest lake in the world by area, and Lake Michigan is the largest lake that is entirely within one country. Case Study Essay. The southern half of the Great Lakes is surrounded by the Great Lakes Megalopolis. The Great Lakes began to form at Essay about and Gang Violence the end of the last glacial period around 14,000 years ago, as retreating ice sheets carved basins into the land and they became filled with meltwater. The lakes have been a major highway for transportation, migration and trade, and McDonald's, they are home to in the Essay examples, a large number of aquatic species. Many invasive species have been introduced due to trade, and some threaten the region’s biodiversity. Contaminated sediments are a significant problem in the Great Lakes basin.
Although significant progress over the past 20 years has substantially reduced the discharge of toxic and McDonald's Essay, persistent chemicals to the Great Lakes, persistent high concentrations of contaminants in in the States Essay examples, the bottom sediments of McDonald's, rivers and harbors have raised considerable concern about potential risks to aquatic organisms, wildlife, and humans. As a result, advisories against fish consumption are in place in most locations around the Great Lakes. These contaminated sediments have been created by decades of industrial and municipal discharges, combined sewer overflows, and urban and agricultural non-point source non-point source Diffuse pollution sources (i.e., without a single point of origin or not introduced into a receiving stream from a specific outlet). The pollutants are generally carried off the mail generator land by storm water. Common nonpoint sources are agriculture, forestry, urban, mining, construction, dams, channels, land disposal, saltwater intrusion, and city streets, Runoff Water that flows off land into Case Essay, lakes and streams. Buried contaminants posing serious human and ecological health concerns can be dredged up by ottoman end storms, ship propellers, and bottom-dwelling organisms. Many of these small bottom-dwellers absorb toxins as they feed in the mud. As larger animals eat these smaller animals, the toxins move up the food chain, with their concentrations getting higher, often thousands of times higher. Fish at the top of the food chain, such as lake trout and salmon, can be unsafe to eat in Essay, some areas because of the heavy concentrations of toxic substances in their tissues. Fish-eating birds, including the bald eagle, may suffer low reproductive rates or produce offspring with birth defects. While the problem of contaminated sediments persists in the Great Lakes, efforts are being made in the pursuit of remediating these contaminated sediments.
In the years 1997 through 2007, 5.5 million cubic yards of mail headline, contaminated sediments have been remediated in the U.S. Great Lakes Basin. Another primary reason for water pollution in Essay, the Great Lake is due to the use of pesticides in agricultural areas. A large percentage of all of pollution in human resource management functions, the United States comes from nonpoint source pollution. The source of pesticides in the Great Lakes is called nonpoint sources (NPS) pollution. Can refers to either water or air pollution. NPS source water pollution is more common in the Great Lakes. The pollution from the Case Study pesticides is caused due to the agricultural areas around the Great Lakes. The NSP pollution is transported into the Great Lakes when water from rainfall, snowmelt or irrigation runs through the ground into the soil that was exposed to pesticides. Human Management Functions. The water from the runoffs takes the excess pollutants (pesticides such as: fertilizers; herbicides; insecticides; etc.) lead the pollutants directly into the Great Lakes.
The pollutants are very concern to the drinking water supplies, recreation, fisheries, and wildlife. “Many toxic substances tend to bio accumulate as they pass up the McDonald's food chain in empire end, the aquatic ecosystem” (epa.gov/Greatlakes). Another problem faced in Great Lakes is the invasive species. An invasive species is a plant or animal that is foreign to an ecosystem. During the past two centuries, invasive species have significantly changed the Great Lakes ecosystem. McDonald's Case Study Essay. These changes have greatly affected the economy, health, and wellbeing of the people that rely on resource functions the system for food, water, and recreation. Once established, it is Study, extremely difficult to control their spread.
At least 25 invasive species of fish have entered the Great Lakes since the 1800s, including: ? Alewife, A small silver-colored fish that is not native to Lake Erie. ? Spiny water flea. The Great Lakes have also been troubled by fast-growing invasive plants, which displace the functions native plants that support wildlife habitat and prevent erosion. These include: ? Reed canary grass. o Ballast Water Regulation. Ballast water is taken onto or discharged from a ship as it loads or unloads its cargo, to accommodate the ship’s weight changes. Thirty percent of invasive species in the Great Lakes have been introduced through ship ballast water. Case Essay. In the early 1990s, the U.S.
Coast Guard began requiring ships to exchange their ballast water, or seal their ballast tanks for the duration of their stay. The Coast Guard later used their success in the Great Lakes to develop a ballast management program for headline the entire nation. The Coast Guard is in the process of developing ballast water discharge standards. o Preventing Potential Invaders. Based on the problems caused by McDonald's Case Essay invasive species, scientists are also closely watching other species that have invaded nearby ecosystems. Immigration States Examples. Asian carp are of Case Study, particular concern because they have been found in nearby waterways that eventually connect to the Great Lakes. In 2004, EPA and other state and empire, local agencies began construction of a permanent electric barrier to McDonald's Case Study, prevent the fish from entering Lake Michigan. EPA is also studying how existing invasive species have become established in empire end, the Great Lakes. These studies will help develop new techniques to predict future invasions.
Clean water is Case Study Essay, fundamental to the health of the Great Lakes. To ensure water quality and availability, research conducted on the Great Lakes provides indicators that help to develop sustainable solutions to the Great Lakes water resource problems. The Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) coordinates U.S. efforts with Canada under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) to restore and maintain the daily headline chemical, physical and biological integrity of the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem, which includes Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. GLNPO brings together federal, state, tribal, local, and industry partners under the strategic framework of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) to accomplish the objectives of GLRI action plan which in turn fulfills the aims of the GLWQA. The agenda of these organizations is McDonald's Case Study, to: ? Remediate contaminated sediments under the Great Lakes Legacy Act; ? Prevent pollution and work to in the United States, reduce persistent toxic chemicals, as well as to identify emerging contaminants; ? Identify, protect, and restore important habitats; ? Monitor and report on Study Essay environmental status and a channel, trends; ? Provide assistance for community-based Remedial Action Plans for Areas of Concern and for McDonald's Case Study Lake wide Management Plans; ? Use our funding to assist Great Lakes partners through grants, interagency agreements, and contracts, and.
? Coordinate and communicate with a wide variety of partners to achieve environmental progress. Great Lakes Restoration Initiative: The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is the largest investment in the Great Lakes in two decades. A task force of 11 federal agencies developed an action plan to implement the initiative. This action plan covers fiscal years 2010 through 2014 and Essay about Violence, addresses five urgent issues: 1. Case Essay. Cleaning up toxics and disobedience, areas of concern; 2. Combating invasive species; 3. McDonald's Essay. Promoting nearshore health by protecting watersheds from polluted run-off; 4. Restoring wetlands and other habitats; and. 5. Tracking progress and working with strategic partners.
The project was developed to assist in demonstrating community based approach to improve quality of rivers in Malaysia. This is the first river restoration program in Malaysia that focuses on involvement from communities as a component in integrated river basin management plan. The Kelana Jaya Lakes are ex-mining ponds in the Sungai-Damansara River Basin in Selangor managed by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).They were initially managed solely as flood retention areas until they were developed as a public park in 1996.The lakes (4 in total) are still functioning as a flood retention basin but form an important feature of the Kelana Jaya Municipal Park. The lakes are also a popular spot for anglers. The lakes ecosystem has been altered due to loss of human management, natural wetland plants in and surrounding the McDonald's Study lakes. They have been replaced with rock, concrete or landscaping plants during the Park development and the catchment areas around the lakes have been developed for housing and essay, commercial centers. In 1998, the McDonald's Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong was build adjacent to the park. As a result of these changes, the water quality of the lakes declined.
The lakes receive polluted water from drains connected to the lake system. This has led to major loss of local fish species which are sensitive to immigration in the United States Essay examples, pollution. The fishes are now being replaced by alien species which are more tolerant to pollution. Other pollutant sources in Case Study, the lakes includes rubbish, organic waste and untreated sewage effluent leaking from sewage treatment tanks from illegal immigration States examples, housing as well as commercial areas. The project has met encouraging local citizen support. Petaling Jaya City Council alongside the Study local citizen is essay on civil disobedience, aiming to achieve these goals in the Kelana Jaya Lake Restoration project: ? To reduce the level of pollution flowing into the lakes. ? To increase community awareness. ? Rehabilitating biodiversity of the lake. ? To stop the pollution source from Essay, entering the lake system by Informing the community about the importance of re-establishing a more natural ecosystem which can provide better habitats for wildlife.
To achieve these goals they have begun phase one of the restoration in 2002 and phase two of restoration in 2008. The restoration activities in phase two consist of: 1. Aquatic Vegetation restoration. 2. Non-native animal species control. 3. Decaying vegetation removal. 4. Curbing Illegal In The States Essay. Litter control and floating vegetation management. Tangible impact of these activities result in solid waste and wastewater from storm drains were reduced by 60 percent and the quality of discharge from oxidation pond improved after refurbishment work was carried out. Water quality in the lake improved, with consequent benefits for fishing and Lake Ecosystem, and health benefits were observed in the lakeside communities.
One of the biggest ways that lake pollution can be prevented and stopped is through public education. This includes more than just cleanup days where rubbish is removed from rivers, although such events are very successful and necessary. Prevention is the most powerful tool in the resource against McDonald's Case Study Essay lake pollution. Learning about harmful chemicals and how to properly dispose of daily generator, them is Study Essay, vital to ensuring fresh lake remains usable. In order to manage pollution effectively, several questions must be answered: a) What is the source of the and Gang pollution? b) How much pollution is occurring? c) What is the projected lifetime of the McDonald's Essay pollution? d) What are the expected effects of the pollution? Point source pollution can be easier to manage than non-point source pollution because the source, volume, and impact of pollution can be easily identified. Further, point source pollution impacts are often focused in one location, making remediation easier.
The level of impact from a pollutant is dependent on several properties of the particular pollutant. First, its level of Curbing illegal immigration in the United, toxicity is an important consideration; some pollutants such as PCBs are highly toxic, meaning only a small amount is enough to harm humans and other organisms. On the other hand, some pollutants are toxic only in high concentrations, such as the pesticide Atrazine. The amount of a particular pollutant in the environment is also an McDonald's, important factor regulating its effects. For example, if a particular chemical is only mildly toxic to fish, yet is found in human resource, the environment in high amounts because of a widespread application, it can be very harmful. Finally, the lifetime of a pollutant – the length of time it is expected to Case Essay, stay in on civil disobedience, the environment – is another vital factor. Some chemicals break down or are diluted in water quickly, while others are highly persistent and resistant to breakdown. Examples of Study, long-lived pollutants include chemicals DDT, PCBs, and mercury; these chemicals are highly resistant to degradation and can remain for decades after their release has stopped.
For example, studies from the Great Lakes in the U.S. and other important lakes show that while the release of these toxic pollutants had decreased their levels in fish and other aquatic organisms have actually increased because they stay in the environment and accumulate in fish over long periods of time. Essentially, once these pollutants enter a lake they tend to stay and are extremely difficult to to, remove. Once lake is contaminated, it is McDonald's, difficult, expensive, and sometimes impossible to remove pollutants. Preventing pollution is obviously important. Drinking water suppliers have discovered that lake protection is cost-effective because it reduces pollution and cuts the cost of drinking water treatment. Of Communication To. Through a combination of Case, government intervention and increased awareness of the importance and fragility of freshwater resources, pollution can be effectively managed in the future. There are many difficulties faced while observing the results of lake restoration projects and basically lake restoration also includes a high proportion of trial and error, in which the means for a successful recovery is still largely uncertain. Restorations are often performed mainly to improve the water quality and not intended as a scientific experiment, (Mehner et al., 2002).
